Anwar: Govt reducing national debt
MUAR: The government is working to reduce the national debt and avoid unnecessary loans to spare future generations, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
The Prime Minister said that while borrowing for development was sometimes necessary, the country must not continue racking up debt irresponsibly.
'Our debt is still high. If we don't pay it back, then who will want to invest in us?
'We want to bring the debt level down and avoid adding new loans because in the end, the ones who will pay for it are our children,' he said during the launch of the 2025 National Month and Fly the Jalur Gemilang campaign at Dataran Tanjung Emas here yesterday.
Anwar also slammed critics who accused his administration of allowing the debt to increase.
'They don't understand. We took a new loan of RM100bil in 2022 to repay earlier borrowings and their interests.
'In 2023, it went down to RM90bil. This year, it is RM80bil. We are reducing it gradually,' he said.
Anwar added that he understood when past leaders like Tun Abdul Razak borrowed from the World Bank to set up the Federal Land Development Authority (Felda) and for rural development.
'If it's that kind of debt, I accept it.
'But if we're talking about taking loans to 'sakau' (plunder), that is what we are fighting against now,' he said, adding that the people should elect leaders who do not plunder the country's wealth for personal or family gain.
He cited the example of a former leader's family member allegedly having RM1.2bil and another with RM4bil.
'I am not vengeful or going after old people. I just want the people's money to be returned,' Anwar added.
He said that while the government does not dismiss the policies of previous leaders, there were weaknesses that needed to be addressed.
'My colleagues and I in the Cabinet are working to improve past weaknesses, whether it's attitude, leadership, or the abuse of power for personal or family gain,' he added.
Separately, Anwar defended the government's decision to reduce petrol prices for Malaysians while requiring foreigners to pay market rates, saying he was 'Prime Minister for Malaysians, not for foreigners'.
He said critics had claimed the move was unfair to foreigners, arguing that they also contributed to the country.
'They do not pay income tax here. No country in the world will allow foreigners to enjoy such benefits as locals,' he added.
Anwar said that the six sen reduction to RM1.99 would make petrol prices in Malaysia much lower than Singapore, Thailand and Indonesia.
'Foreigners can buy petrol at RM2.50 or RM2.60,' he said.

Malaysian aid reaches Gaza after six-month blockade via Jordan
KUALA LUMPUR: A Malaysian humanitarian mission has successfully delivered 2,400 tonnes of aid to Gaza through a Jordan-led convoy, marking the first cross-border delivery since Israel blocked all access to the territory on March 2. Karisma Humanitarian Aid Mission (KHOM) director Nik Marina Datuk Hussein confirmed that the supplies, including food boxes and infant formula funded by public donations, were transported on four trucks as part of a 60-truck convoy coordinated by the Jordan Armed Forces (JAF). The effort was supported by the World Food Programme (WFP) and World Central Kitchen. The convoy entered Gaza early yesterday through the King Hussein Bridge in Jordan, becoming the sixth humanitarian delivery organised by Jordan in recent days. 'The aid from KHOM had been stored in Jordan since February due to the closure but was immediately handed over to JAF once clearance was granted. 'We were informed the convoy has now reached Gaza, with KHOM's aid among the first to reach starving residents,' Nik Marina said in a statement today. She explained that the breakthrough came after Jordanian authorities confirmed on July 26 that KHOM's aid had been approved for entry, making it the first Malaysian NGO to deliver external aid to Gaza in nearly six months. Nik Marina expressed gratitude to Jordan's King Abdullah II for issuing the Royal Decree that enabled the mission, as well as to JAF, the Jordan Hashemite Charity Organization (JHCO), and other agencies for prioritising KHOM's supplies in Jordan's sixth aid mission to Gaza. 'The political truce in Gaza announced by Israel remains fragile. Even before the war, Gaza needed no less than 1,000 truckloads of food a day, let alone now when starvation is being used as a weapon of war,' she said. India extends free etourist visa for Malaysians till Dec 31 next year
KUALA LUMPUR: (Bernama) Malaysians will continue to enjoy a 30-day double-entry e-Tourist visa at no cost, as New Delhi has extended the facility until Dec 31, 2026, the Indian High Commission in Kuala Lumpur announced. The 30-day e-Tourist visa can be applied online at the official e-visa link at All other categories of e-visas, including e-Business, e-Conference, e-Medical, e-Ayush, e-Emergency X Miscellaneous, will require payment of visa fees as prescribed, a statement from the Indian High Commission said. Existing rules regarding e-Tourist visas and other e-visas mentioned at will continue to apply. "Those who wish to obtain regular paper visas from the Indian Consular Application Centres in six cities across Malaysia outsourced to M/s IVS Global Services (website: or from the High Commission of India in Kuala Lumpur, will continue to pay the prescribed visa fees,' the statement read.
