Lithium-ion battery fires jump 162% in Toronto over 2 years, city says
From 2022 to 2024, the number of fires jumped 162 per cent, from 29 to 76, according to a city news release Monday.
So far this year, Toronto Fire has responded to 43 fires, the city says.
"We're seeing a concerning rise in fires caused by lithium-ion batteries, many of which are preventable," said Fire Chief Jim Jessop in the release.
The batteries are commonly found in e-bikes, smartphones, laptops and many other electronic devices. When used correctly, lithium-ion batteries are generally safe, the city release says.
But the city is reminding people that modifying or tampering with these batteries can be dangerous, saying it's a common cause of many recent fires.
Additionally, battery overcharging can cause overheating, sometimes leading to a process called thermal runaway, said Marla Friebe, deputy fire chief of community risk reduction.
"When these batteries go into thermal runaway, they are almost impossible to put out," Friebe said firefighters have to keep the fire from spreading by cooling it while they wait for the battery to self-extinguish.
Friebe says the Toronto Fire Service would like to see more regulation and is asking people to refrain from purchasing devices that contain lithium-ion batteries online or second-hand, particularly bigger devices like e-bikes.
The reminder comes as Toronto Fire kick-starts its second annual campaign aimed at educating people on the fire risks associated with lithium-ion batteries.
There are a few things users can do to reduce the risk of a fire, the city says, aside from not tinkering with the batteries.
People should only use certified, manufacturer-approved batteries and chargers and keep them in sight while they charge, the city says. Should users notice anything out of the ordinary with a battery — strange odours, discolouration, excessive heat, change in shape, leaking or odd noises — the city says they should stop using it and contact the manufacturer.
Old or damaged lithium-ion batteries should be disposed of at city drop-off depots, the city says.

This Under-$10 Stock Soars 585% in a Year. What Analysts Think Will Happen Next.
Shares of CommScope (COMM) are on an impressive run, rising more than 585% in a year. This strong rally reflects the company's solid position as a provider of essential infrastructure solutions for communication, data centers, and entertainment networks. CommScope's growth is likely to be supported by the strength of its three core business segments. The Connectivity and Cable Solutions (CCS) segment provides essential fiber optic and copper connectivity solutions, serving a diverse range of sectors, from data centers to residential broadband networks. Meanwhile, the Networking, Intelligent Cellular, and Security Solutions (NICS) segment focuses on wireless networks crucial for both enterprises and service providers. Lastly, the Access Network Solutions (ANS) segment offers essential products, including cable modem termination systems, video infrastructure, and cloud solutions. CommScope is poised to capitalize on the robust growth in the data center market, driven by increasing investments from hyperscale and cloud customers as they expand their AI infrastructure. Moreover, the rebound in its NICS and ANS segments sets a promising trajectory for future growth. In addition, the company's strategic move to divest non-core businesses further enhances its operational efficiency. Despite these positives, the stock's recent rally has sparked concerns about its valuation. Moreover, its high leverage ratio remains a risk. Against this background, let's explore what analysts are forecasting for CommScope stock. CommScope is entering the second half of 2025 with strong momentum, signaling a promising outlook. Its CCS business will continue to benefit from the AI-led tailwinds. Moreover, normalized channel inventory in the NICS and ANS segments, new product launches, and its focus on adding incremental selling resources will support its growth. The company's CCS segment is experiencing impressive momentum, particularly in its enterprise fiber business, which caters to the rapidly growing data center market. First-quarter revenue from this business soared 88% year-over-year to $213 million, now accounting for 29% of CCS revenue, up from 19% a year ago. The growth is fueled not only by the expansion of data centers, but also by the increasing demand from new generative AI architectures. These next-gen AI clusters require more fiber connectivity than traditional systems, pushing up demand for CommScope's fiber solutions. Furthermore, CommScope is accelerating new product development and investing in additional production capacity to capitalize on the rising demand. Its broadband products within CCS are also seeing stronger demand as customer inventories stabilize. In the NICS segment, which includes the RUCKUS product line, Q1 revenue jumped 51% year-over-year, supported by the launch of Wi-Fi 7 products and the RUCKUS Edge platform. This platform enhances networking and security solutions for sectors such as education, where CommScope has recently secured a significant contract. With channel inventory now normalized, NICS is set up for substantial gains in the second half of 2025. ANS, CommScope's access network segment, also delivered solid results, with Q1 sales up 20% and EBITDA up 177% year-over-year, thanks to new node and amplifier products, as well as higher legacy license sales. With a robust pipeline of new offerings and improving market conditions, ANS is expected to keep growing. In summary, CommScope's solid performance across all three business segments, improving industry conditions, and focus on new product launches and profitability improvements set the stage for strong growth in the quarters ahead and could potentially boost its share price. CommScope is poised to deliver solid growth and has been focusing on strengthening its balance sheet, notably paying off its 2026 debt maturities ahead of schedule in the first quarter of 2025. However, despite this progress, CommScope's net leverage remains elevated, at 7.8 times as of March 31, raising some concerns. Furthermore, the stock's recent surge has kept analysts bearish. COMM stock holds a 'Moderate Sell' consensus rating. Adding to the concern, the average analyst price target of $5.10 suggests a potential downside of about 36% from current levels. This indicates that analysts believe the stock may be due for a significant pullback, even as the company works to improve its financial health. CommScope's remarkable rally over the past year reflects the strength of its core businesses and its exposure to rapidly growing sectors, such as data centers and AI infrastructure. Moreover, a rebound in its NICS and ANS segments augurs well for growth. However, elevated debt levels and stretched valuations warrant caution. What Should You Look For In Onboarding HR Software
The choice of onboarding HR software is crucial for an organization's hiring process. An efficient system simplifies processes, improves the new hire experience, and keeps your company compliant. Understanding key features and benefits can go a long way in maximizing the efficacy of onboarding solutions. User-Friendly Interface A simple interface makes onboarding easy for managers and new hires. Onboarding HR software features intuitive navigation, which ensures ease of use and reduces the time needed to train staff. Users can get things done on a platform with clear instructions and an easy-to-use design. An interface that caters to different devices improves accessibility, making it easier for team members joining remotely or on-site to use the platform. Comprehensive Integration Integration capabilities are among the most critical functions in HR software onboarding. Integrating this tool should be seamless with the current systems, ensuring data consistency on all platforms. Such harmonization helps in avoiding repetition and makes the work easy and efficient. Integrating payroll, performance management, and communication tools can create a holistic network that benefits all parties Customization Options Since every organization has peculiar requirements, customizing it is crucial. It should bring flexibility to accommodate unique business needs. Customize workflows, forms, and processes to align with the organization's goals. This customization helps organizations retain their unique identity and leverage the software to the maximum. Automated Workflows Automating repetitive tasks helps save time and minimizes errors. The streamlined nature of onboarding HR software with workflows automating processes allows HR teams to develop a strategic plan rather than spending time on manual tasks. The entire process is streamlined: automatic document generation, document reminders, progress tracking, and more. Such automation ensures a seamless transition for the new hires, delivering a delightful onboarding experience. Compliance Management Compliance with both legal and organizational requirements continues to be a key focus. Onboarding software should include tools that make it easy for employees to follow every policy and regulation. It should also include built-in compliance management tools for tracking required documentation, certifications, and training. Organizations protect themselves from potential legal risks by reducing the risk of non-compliance. Fun Onboarding Process Onboarding is the starting point of a new employee's journey. Software that encourages interaction and engagement fosters a sense of belonging and encouragement. Specialties such as interactive modules, personalized welcome messages, and virtual tours create a friendly atmosphere. When new team members realize their worth, they will be even more productive and happy at work. Analytics and Reporting Statistics and data-driven insights are increasingly used to drive decision-making and process improvement. The leading onboarding HR software with a robust analytics and reporting feature provides key metrics. It identifies areas for improvement by analyzing completion rates, feedback results, and time-to-productivity. This ensures the onboarding process continuously improves based on these insights. Scalability and Flexibility Scalability is critical when organizations scale. HR software for onboarding must scale efficiently without any performance degradation. Solutions that provide seamless transitions can effectively support a growing workforce through transitions. Companies are building a foundation to cater to changing business landscapes and future growth with scalable software. Security Features Safeguarding proprietary information is still a top priority. Security is a must for onboarding software; this includes encryption, access controls, and regular audits. By protecting employee information, organizations also ensure trust and confidence in keeping it safe. By putting in place strong security, a business can reduce the chances of data breaches. Feedback Mechanisms Feedback is critical in understanding how the user experience goes once the onboarding software is in place. Continuous feedback offers clues to strengths and weaknesses. Survey and rating forms and comment sections foster direct communication with new employees and HR teams. Such a collaborative approach also ensures that all onboarding processes are constantly enhanced. Final Thoughts Onboarding itself is a small part of a much larger picture, and selecting an HR software solution to meet your needs means you have to weigh several factors before you make your choice, most importantly, ease of use, integration, customization, and more. Features like automation, compliance management, and security make things more efficient and make the system operate more reliably. Focusing on engagement and scalability prepares organizations for effective employee onboarding. Making better-informed decisions will help improve onboarding, thus benefiting the organization as a whole.
