Prime minister announces plans for JD80m hospital, transit upgrades in Madaba
AMMAN — Prime Minister Jaafar Hassan on Tuesday pledged to begin construction of a state-of-the-art government hospital in Madaba this year, stressing his commitment to enhancing healthcare services in the governorate.
During a Cabinet session in Madaba, the sixth held outside Amman as part of the government's regional engagement initiative, Hassan said that the hospital, designed to accommodate several medical specialities, is expected to be completed within four years at an estimated cost of JD60 million, with the total cost reaching JD80 million when fully equipped.
As part of efforts to improve transportation, the Prime Minister also unveiled a rapid transit bus service between Madaba and Amman. The new route will feature eight buses operating on a fixed schedule, offering 52 daily trips with direct government subsidies to enhance affordability and accessibility for commuters, according to a Prime Ministry statement.
Reaffirming a citizen-focused governance approach, Hassan said, 'The government puts people first, and there is no place in the public sector for those who do not share this commitment.' He underscored the importance of field visits in shaping policy and responding effectively to local needs.
Recognizing Madaba's historical and religious significance, Hassan highlighted plans to accelerate restoration and expansion projects, including completing Phase II of the Christian Pilgrimage Trail and opening the Thiban Visitor Centre.
On economic prospects, the prime minister highlighted Jordan's economy as 'resilient and strong,' citing major foreign investments and strategic projects set to launch in 2025 and beyond.
In education, Hassan announced plans to build several new schools, including the Thiban Vocational School for Boys, which will follow the BTEC vocational education system. He also reiterated the government's commitment to expanding vocational training nationwide to equip students with the technical skills needed for the labour market.
During the session, several ministers outlined a comprehensive development vision for Madaba, detailing projects planned for this year and the years ahead.

He reaffirmed the government's commitment to political modernisation, including the development of the Local Administration Law, aimed at strengthening municipal governance and addressing issues such as debt and service quality. The goal is to balance improved performance with governance reforms while maintaining democratic processes. Acting House of Representatives Speaker Mustafa Khasawneh highlighted the constitutional framework governing the relationship between the legislature and the executive, emphasising the importance of oversight in serving national interests. He praised the government's outreach to governorates and efforts to ease people's burdens amid economic challenges. Khasawneh noted that political modernisation has reshaped parliamentary work, reflecting Jordan's progress toward sustainable development and reform. Head of the Progress Party's parliamentary bloc MP Raed Dhahrawi commended King Abdullah II's efforts to promote regional peace and stability, especially regarding the Palestinian cause. He referenced the King's speech in Strasbourg, which outlined a roadmap emphasising a two-state solution and the need to resolve regional conflicts. Dhahrawi called for enhanced oversight in vital sectors such as health to safeguard people's well-being. The meeting included an extensive discussion, with members raising questions and proposals, addressed by the Prime Minister and relevant ministers. The oath-taking ceremony was conducted in accordance with Article 13 of the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Law No. (32) of 2000. Deputy Chairman of the Board of Commissioners Karima Al-Dabet, and members Moatasem Al-Hindawi, Nidal Al-Auran, Thabet Al-Nabulsi, and Mohammad Abu Omar took the legal oath. The ceremony was attended by Minister of State for Prime Ministry Affairs Abdullah Adwan and Chairman of the Board of Commissioners of the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority Shadi Majali.

Jordan cuts customs duties on imported vehicles
The Jordanian Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Dr. Jafar Hassan, approved on Saturday an amended special tax system for 2025 that reduces total taxes (both general and special) on vehicles. This comprehensive structural reform aims to significantly lower costs for citizens. The decision includes substantial reductions in overall taxes and customs duties on vehicles, addressing financial and structural imbalances in the sector. It also seeks to diversify vehicle options by lowering acquisition costs, complementing ongoing government efforts to reduce expenses and improve quality of life. Under the amendment, total taxes on different vehicle types will be reduced as follows: Gasoline cars: from 71 percent to 51 percent, a reduction of 28 percent Hybrid cars: from 60 percent to 39 percent, a reduction of 35 percent The special tax on electric vehicles will be fixed and unified at 27 percent for all categories, regardless of vehicle value or type. This replaces the previous graduated tax system, which planned to raise taxes up to 55 percent over three years, announced late last year. Customs duties on scooters and motorcycles will be reduced from 45 percent to 33 percent, a decrease of 26 percent, aiming to encourage their use, reduce fuel dependence, and help ease traffic congestion and environmental pollution. The General Customs Department will begin implementing the new tax system starting Sunday morning, June 29, 2025.
