Karnataka High Court to government: Pay para swimmer pending reward, Rs 2L litigation costs
In a sharp rebuke to the department's almost a decade-long delay, the court ruled that officials must personally bear the litigation costs.
Vishwas, 36, had approached the court after multiple attempts to secure his entitled reward under a 2013 govt order had gone unanswered. Though he had applied in 2018 for Rs 6 lakh, the department stalled his claim, citing technicalities related to his association's disqualification.

Justice M Nagaprasanna dismissed this argument, noting that the cash award was tied to Vishwas's international achievements — two silver and two bronze medals — not the status of his sporting association. The court also warned of a Rs 1,000 daily penalty if the Rs 1.2 lakh payment is not made within two weeks of receiving the order.
"The focus must not be on bureaucratic technicalities, but on the living human spirit that triumphed against colossal odds. The govt's duty is not merely administrative; it has to be moral, constitutional, and humane. When a man without arms dives into pools and emerges not just victorious but triumphant on the international stage, the state is expected to salute that spirit, not stifle his rights by red-tapism," the court observed.

GFA plans to make Duler Stadium I-League compliant with Rs 1.3 crore investment
Owned by the GFA, Duler has hosted I-League matches in the past Panaji: The Goa Football Association (GFA) will seek approval of its general body on Sunday to go ahead with expansion work at the Duler Football Stadium which will help become I-League compliant, allowing Goan clubs to host their national league matches at the venue. Owned by the GFA, Duler has hosted I-League matches in the past but with a stricter criterion in place, the association needs improvement, particularly with the dressing rooms, which has only two showers and toilets, as against the requirement of four. 'We cannot demolish and build new dressing rooms in the existing place,' said GFA president Caitano Fernandes. 'The plan is to have a new building with two dressing rooms that has four showers and four toilets each. As per rules, the dressing room must mandatorily accommodate a minimum of 30 people. The new building will also have a referee's room, match commissioner's room and a place for the local organising committee. We will present the proposal before the general body on Sunday and act accordingly.' To become compliant, there is also a requirement for a medical room on the ground floor, which the association plans to fulfil by vacating the existing GFA office and converting it to a medical room. The GFA office will then be located on the first floor of the new building, whenever ready. The construction is expected to cost GFA Rs 1.26 crore which it hopes to recover from the three clubs who will use the facilities. 'Two clubs have already told us that they are willing to contribute (financially),' said vice president Jonathan de Sousa. 'They could give us an advance rent and we can present a proposal where the clubs can use the facilities for free, for a certain number of years. It helps everyone. The project is expected to be completed within nine months.' In its press release, the GFA said the 'major development project at the southern side of the stadium could be a revenue changer for Goan football.'

Bombay HC issues notice on BCCI's appeal against Rs 538 crore arbitration awards to defunct Kochi Tuskers
The Bombay High Court on Friday issued notice in appeals filed by Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) challenging a single-judge bench order that upheld two arbitration awards worth over Rs 538 crore granted in favour of the now-defunct Indian Premier League franchise Kochi Tuskers Kerala. A division bench of Justice Shree Chandrashekhar and Justice Manjusha Deshpande restrained Rendezvous Sports World (RSW) and Kochi Cricket Private Limited (KCPL) from withdrawing the amounts already deposited by the BCCI for eight weeks. The BCCI filed an appeal against the June 18 verdict of the single-judge bench of Justice Riyaz I Chagla that dismissed the BCCI's plea challenging arbitral awards. The franchise took part in only one season of the IPL, in 2011, under a consortium led by RSW and KCPL. The dispute began after the BCCI in September 2011 terminated the Kochi Tuskers Kerala due to alleged breach of the franchise agreement. Aggrieved RSW and KCPL began arbitration proceedings alleging 'wrongful' termination. On June 22, 2015, the arbitral tribunal awarded over Rs 384.83 crore to KCPL and over Rs 153.34 crore to RSW, along with interest and costs. The BCCI challenged the award before Bombay HC, which was upheld on June 18. Justice Chagla had held that arbitrator's conclusion was substantiated by records and there were 'no valid grounds' and 'no patent illegality' raised in BCCI's two pleas to warrant interference with the arbitration awards. Justice Chagla had permitted the KCPL and RSW to withdraw amounts deposited by the BCCI after six weeks. However, the BCCI filed an appeal against the single-judge bench order. The two-judge bench is likely to begin the final hearing on BCCI's appeal from September 17.

Contractor gets notice over basketball court ceiling leak
Ludhiana: Taking strict cognisance of leakage in the basketball court in Guru Nanak Stadium, the municipal corporation (MC) served a notice on the contractor, directing him to replace faulty ceiling sheets. MC commissioner/CEO of Ludhiana Smart City Limited (LSCL), Aaditya Dachalwal, also formed a committee to conduct an inspection and submit a report. The committee comprises MC additional commissioner Paramdeep Singh as chairman, with superintending engineer Sham Lal Gupta and executive engineer Arvind Kumar as members. The notice mentioned that leakage was recently observed in the ceiling of the basketball court due to a faulty ceiling sheet. This reflects poor workmanship and negligence on the part of the contractor, on whom a penalty of Rs 10 lakh had already been imposed for delay in completion of the project. Authorities have again directed the contractor to take corrective steps and replace faulty ceiling sheets, failing which additional penalty would be imposed for missing deadlines and defective execution of work. MC commissioner Dachalwal said that they were monitoring development works being undertaken across the city and no laxity would be tolerated. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Thousands in Wales Upgrading Homes for Free Wales Heating Grants Apply Now Undo The basketball court project has remained in the news for many reasons, with questions raised about its quality.
