After Mandating ABS, Govt Considering Hands-Off Detection In Bikes
Centre to enforce stricter safety norms for two-wheelers, requiring overspeed warnings and hands-off handlebar detection to reduce reckless riding and improve road safety.
Despite the severe risks involved, some individuals continue to engage in reckless driving, overspeeding, and hands-off riding to create social media reels. This behaviour not only endangers their own lives but also the lives of other road users. In a significant step toward enhancing road safety, the Centre is preparing to tighten safety norms for two-wheelers.
After mandating anti-lock braking systems (ABS) and certified helmets, the government is now considering a new set of regulations aimed directly at reckless behaviour such as overspeeding and hands-off riding.
According to a LiveMint report, the government plans to make overspeed warning systems and hands-off handlebar detection features mandatory in all new motorcycles. These safety systems will monitor rider behaviour and issue visual and audible alerts when speed limits are exceeded or when the rider removes their hands from the handlebars.
The proposed changes are currently under consultation but reflect a strong intent to tackle the staggering number of road accidents involving two-wheelers. Data shows that nearly 44 per cent of all road fatalities in India involve two-wheeler riders, with overspeeding and loss of control among the leading causes.
These features are not just about compliance but about changing the riding culture, as riders not only endanger their lives but also put others at risk through reckless riding.
The system, inspired by car safety mechanisms like seatbelt reminders, will use electronic sensors to detect unsafe riding behaviour. Once operational, it will help enforce safer practices without relying solely on manual policing.
This initiative is part of a broader two-wheeler safety effort, set to take effect from January 2026. All new two-wheelers will be required to come equipped with ABS, a braking technology already mandated for motorcycles above 125cc. The rule will now apply across the board to ensure better stability and reduced stopping distance during sudden braking.
Additionally, the government has already mandated the inclusion of two BIS-certified helmets with every new two-wheeler sale to tackle the high incidence of head injuries. For electric two-wheelers, which are virtually silent, new regulations will require built-in sound-generating systems to alert pedestrians and nearby vehicles, enhancing safety for both riders and others on the road.
These upcoming safety norms highlight the government's commitment to reducing road fatalities and ensuring a safer riding experience in a country where two-wheelers dominate daily commuting.

Oscar Piastri Edges Out Lando Norris As McLaren Claim 1-2 Finish At Belgian Grand Prix
Last Updated: Piastri won the Belgian Grand Prix, outpacing McLaren teammate Norris after a rain delay. Charles Leclerc held off Max Verstappen for third, marking a crucial podium for Ferrari. Oscar Piastri claimed a hard-fought victory at the Belgian Grand Prix on Sunday, outpacing his McLaren teammate and title rival Lando Norris after a weather-interrupted start at Spa-Francorchamps. Following a delay of over an hour due to heavy rain, the race eventually got underway behind the safety car. Once green-flag conditions resumed on lap four, Piastri wasted no time overtaking Norris and taking control at the front. The Australian then built a solid lead, managing his pace expertly even as his tire wear became an increasing concern in the closing laps. Norris, despite closing the gap late in the race, could not mount a serious challenge, and Piastri crossed the line first to take his second career win. Norris, who had started alongside his teammate on the front row, remained within striking distance for much of the race but ultimately ran out of time—and tire life—to make a move. 'I gave it everything," Norris said post-race. 'Oscar did a great job today. It was tricky out there with the conditions and the tire wear, but we brought it home for a strong result for the team." Despite being the pre-race favorite, Verstappen struggled to find the pace in race trim and ultimately had to settle for fourth. Leclerc's result marks a crucial podium for Ferrari, who continue to battle Mercedes and Red Bull in the Constructors' Championship. A day earlier, Verstappen had managed to beat both McLaren drivers in the Sprint Race, finishing ahead of Piastri and Norris. However, McLaren's performance over the weekend confirmed the team's growing consistency and momentum in the championship fight. Singapore: Lady driver pulled out of sinkhole by Indian man, other workers
Agency: PTI Last Updated: Singapore, Jul 27 (PTI) A 46-year-old Indian foreman was among several workers who rescued a woman from her car after it fell into a sinkhole in Singapore, according to a media report on Sunday. The sinkhole developed along the city-state's Tanjong Katong Road South thoroughfare on Saturday, Channel News Asia reported. Sinkholes are rare on Singapore roads. Pitchai Udaiyappan Subbiah, a foreman, was working at a nearby site when the car fell into a sinkhole. 'I leaned in to see if there were people in the car, and I saw one person come out of the car," the report quoted him as saying. 'I immediately said that we had to rescue her," said Subbiah, who spoke in both Tamil and English. He, along with other workers, used a rope to pull the driver of the car to safety. Some workers had wanted to go into the sinkhole to pull the woman up, but Subbiah advised against it, telling them to throw a rope down instead. 'You go down, you also cannot climb up," he said. According to the report, the sinkhole was initially dry, but water began to flow in later. The Land Transport Authority said early Sunday morning that the road will be closed until further notice and that it is working with the Public Utilities Board and the Building and Construction Authority to monitor the repairs. It added that preliminary checks indicate that surrounding buildings are not affected.
