Piastri won the Belgian Grand Prix, outpacing McLaren teammate Norris after a rain delay. Charles Leclerc held off Max Verstappen for third, marking a crucial podium for Ferrari.
Oscar Piastri claimed a hard-fought victory at the Belgian Grand Prix on Sunday, outpacing his McLaren teammate and title rival Lando Norris after a weather-interrupted start at Spa-Francorchamps.
Following a delay of over an hour due to heavy rain, the race eventually got underway behind the safety car. Once green-flag conditions resumed on lap four, Piastri wasted no time overtaking Norris and taking control at the front.
The Australian then built a solid lead, managing his pace expertly even as his tire wear became an increasing concern in the closing laps. Norris, despite closing the gap late in the race, could not mount a serious challenge, and Piastri crossed the line first to take his second career win.
Norris, who had started alongside his teammate on the front row, remained within striking distance for much of the race but ultimately ran out of time—and tire life—to make a move.
'I gave it everything," Norris said post-race. 'Oscar did a great job today. It was tricky out there with the conditions and the tire wear, but we brought it home for a strong result for the team."
Despite being the pre-race favorite, Verstappen struggled to find the pace in race trim and ultimately had to settle for fourth. Leclerc's result marks a crucial podium for Ferrari, who continue to battle Mercedes and Red Bull in the Constructors' Championship.
A day earlier, Verstappen had managed to beat both McLaren drivers in the Sprint Race, finishing ahead of Piastri and Norris. However, McLaren's performance over the weekend confirmed the team's growing consistency and momentum in the championship fight.

Explained: What Are Rapid Tiebreaks & How Will They Be Played At Women's World Cup

Last Updated: Koneru Humpy and Divya Deshmukh drew their second game at the FIDE Women's World Chess Cup, pushing the title clash to rapid tiebreaks on Monday. Star Indian chess players Koneru Humpy and Divya Deshmukh drew their second classical game as well on Sunday, July 27, at the FIDE Women's World Chess Cup in Batumi, Georgia, to push the title clash into a tiebreak, which will be played in the rapid format. The tie-breaker, which will be a series of shorter-duration matches, will be played on Monday to determine the winner. Divya, who didn't make the utmost use of her promising opening in the first match on Saturday, July 26, was far more composed against a Queen pawn opening by transposition employed by Humpy in game 2. The latter, the reigning world rapid champion, enters the playoff with stronger credentials, but Divya has showcased brilliant composure in previous tiebreaks, having already beaten GM Zhu Jiner and compatriot D Harika. Humpy got the optical advantage with her pair of bishops out of the opening, but Divya knew that if she placed her knights well, white wouldn't be able to create many issues. What are rapid tiebreaks? The first stage involves playing a set number of rapid matches with a reduced time control, for example, 15 minutes per player with a 10-second increment. If the rapid tiebreak is drawn, a shorter rapid game might be played with even less time per player, for example, 10 minutes with a five-second increment. What are the rules for the FIDE Women's Chess World Cup? In case of a tiebreaker at the tournament, two rapid games of 10 minutes will be played with a 10-second increment after every move. If the final is still tied, two five-minute games will be played with three-second increments after every move. If the final is still tied, two Blitz games of three minutes each will be played, with two-second increments after every move. view comments First Published: July 28, 2025, 08:49 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. 'Old Trafford Is Known For Keeping...': Sachin Tendulkar Lauds India's Effort

Sachin Tendulkar has lauded India's fourth Test performance at Old Trafford, highlighting Shubman Gill, KL Rahul, and Ravindra Jadeja. Batting legend Sachin Tendulkar lauded the Indian team's performance on the final day of the fourth Test at Old Trafford in Manchester, after the visitors batted out for the entire final day to save the Test and go into the last Test of the five-match series with the tie still alive. Washington Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja batted out more than two sessions to bring back India from the brink of a decisive loss to England and pull off a draw for the ages in Manchester. Having conceded a 311-run lead and lost their openers for ducks in the second innings, India displayed resolve to get a favourable result because of the efforts of skipper Shubman Gill (103 off 238), KL Rahul (90 off 230), Jadeja (107 not out off 185) and Washington (101 not out off 206). 'When it comes to India-England, Old Trafford is known for keeping the series alive. Congratulations, Team India, on a fantastic comeback. @klrahul, @ShubmanGill, @imjadeja and @Sundarwashi5, showed great character and fighting spirit. Good luck with the final Test. Go India! 👍," Tendulkar tweeted on Sunday night. With inspirational England captain Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer removing a well-set Gill and Rahul in the morning, England sensed a series-sealing win against India, but Jadeja and Washington hung in there before milking the bowlers towards the end of the day. Just before the start of the last hour of play, Stokes expressed his desire to end the match, but India decided to carry on with Washington and Jadeja closing in on deserving centuries. Harry Brook began to offer freebies to Jadeja and Washington as a sign of disapproval for India's decision to carry on playing. Players shook hands after the milestones of Jadeja and Washington were achieved, with the latter scoring his maiden Test century. The fifth-day pitch didn't have many demons with prominent movement and a bit of variable bounce was visible in the morning session when Gill and Rahul got out after a 188-run partnership. India will take on England in the fifth Test from July 31 at the Kennington Oval in London. A win for the visitors in that game will ensure a 2-2 drawn series, but a loss will help England win 3-1. view comments First Published: July 28, 2025, 08:23 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
