Mamata pays homage to noted poet Dwijendralal Ray on birth anniversary
Kolkata, Jul 19 (PTI) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday paid tribute to eminent poet and playwright Dwijendralal Ray on his birth anniversary, and said his writings are all the more relevant at a time when a 'deep conspiracy can be observed against Bengalis and the Bengali language".
Banerjee also recalled that she had introduced the 'Dhanadhanya Express' to honour Ray when she was the railway minister.
'On the birth anniversary of the legendary patriotic poet, playwright, and lyricist Dwijendralal Ray, we remember his creations and pay our respectful homage to him for his contributions to Bengali language and literature.
'Today, when a deep conspiracy against the Bengali language and Bengalis is being observed across the country, on this auspicious day of Dwijendralal Ray's birth anniversary, there is an even greater desire to recall his writings," she said in a post on X.
Banerjee said the numerous songs and plays written by Ray on patriotism will continue to be a source of inspiration.
'When I was the railway minister, it was I who introduced the 'Dhanadhanya Express,' which still runs through Krishnanagar, the poet's birthplace. After coming to power in this state, we honoured him by naming a state-of-the-art auditorium built by the state government in Kolkata's Alipore as 'Dhanadhanya Auditorium' and the Alipore Bridge as 'Dhanadhanya Setu'" she said.
Ray was born on July 19, 1863 in Krishnanagar in Bengal's Nadia district. PTI SCH RBT

India must triple its satellites, build space station by 2035: Isro chief
India needs to nearly triple its satellite fleet in orbit over the next three years, Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) Chairman V Narayanan said on Friday while delivering the GP Birla Memorial Lecture on Indian Space Programme – Accomplishments, Challenges and Future Perspectives. During his address, as reported by PTI, Narayanan said the current count of 55 satellites would need to rise sharply to meet national needs. "The requirement is huge. The demand is so much that we have to build satellites. We are working towards that," he said. Narayanan laid out an ambitious vision for India's space future, projecting that the country would be on par with global space powers by 2040 in terms of technology, application capabilities, and infrastructure. A key milestone on this trajectory is the construction of India's first independent space station, with the first module planned for launch in 2028 and the full structure expected to be in orbit by 2035. 12 launch missions in 2025 Isro has lined up 12 launch vehicle missions for 2025, with the most immediate being the highly anticipated launch of the Nasa-Isro Synthetic Aperture Radar (NISAR) satellite. The $1.5-billion Earth observation satellite is scheduled to lift off aboard the GSLV F16 from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre on July 30. NISAR, which will be the world's first dual-frequency radar imaging satellite, will monitor Earth's land and ice surfaces with centimetre-level precision, regardless of weather or daylight. With a 12-meter radar antenna and weighing nearly three tonnes, the satellite is expected to transform global understanding of environmental changes, agriculture, and disaster response. Building India's space economy India's space sector is undergoing a major transformation, both in terms of scale and orientation. From being a primarily service-oriented organisation, Isro is now looking to leverage its research through commercial opportunities, following a favourable policy shift. According to a Ficci-EY report, as earlier reported by Business Standard, India's space economy is projected to grow more than fivefold to $44 billion by 2033 from $8.4 billion in 2022. Communication systems, Earth observation, satellite manufacturing, and navigation services are expected to drive this growth. Moreover, $11 billion in space technology exports are expected by 2033, while $22 billion in investment will be required over the next decade to meet industry goals. Communication services are projected to grow to $14.8 billion by 2033 from $4.19 billion in 2022, while Earth observation is expected to jump from $520 million to $8 billion in the same period. Space private sector, startups get a boost The private sector is also being brought into the fold in a big way. With over 300 space-tech startups now part of the ecosystem, the government has committed ₹3,500-₹4,000 crore to boost satellite development, alongside a ₹1,000 crore VC corpus to catalyse private investment. A total of 52 satellites are planned to be put into orbit over the next five years, as India eyes an 8 per cent share of the global space economy. In all, ₹25,000 crore is expected to flow to the private sector for satellite manufacturing.

Britain, Australia to sign 50-year nuclear submarine treaty
Melbourne, Jul 25 (AP) Britain and Australia announced they will sign a cooperation treaty to build Australian nuclear-powered submarines and welcomed a review by President Donald Trump's administration of the United States' role in the trilateral defence deal. Britain's Defence Secretary John Healey and Foreign Secretary David Lammy met Friday with their Australian counterparts Richard Marles and Penny Wong in Sydney for an annual bilateral meeting. Marles said he and Healey will sign a 50-year treaty Saturday that will underpin bilateral cooperation on building an Australian fleet of submarines powered by US nuclear technology. 'It is as significant a treaty as has been signed between our two countries since federation," Marles said, referring to the unification of several British colonies to form the Australian government in 1901. The three-way alliance was announced in 2021 to contend with growing Chinese military might in the Asia-Pacific region. It would deliver Australia at least eight submarines, including three to five second-hand US Virginia-class submarines. Britain and Australia would cooperate to build their own SSN-AUKUS submarines. Marles and Healey declined to speculate on whether Britain and Australia would continue with jointly building submarines if the US pulled out when questioned at a press conference. 'Australia and the UK welcome the review because we see this as a chance for a new administration to renew its commitment to AUKUS. And that's what we expect," Healey said. 'Any sort of hypotheticals that you suggest simply aren't part of the picture," Healey added, referring to the prospect of Britain and Australia proceeding without the US. The Australian government confirmed this week it had paid the US a second USD 500 million instalment on the AUKUS deal. The first USD 500 million was paid in February. The submarines are expected to cost Australia up to USD 245 billion. The meeting comes as 3,000 British military personnel take part in the largest military exercise ever conducted in Australia. British aircraft carrier joins Australian war games More than 35,000 military personnel from 19 nations are taking part in Exercise Talisman Sabre, which began in 2005 as a biennial joint exercise between the US and Australia. Marles and Healey will inspect the British aircraft HMS Prince of Wales at the northern port of Darwin on Sunday. The carrier is in Australia to take part in the war games. Lammy said the carrier's arrival in Darwin was meant to send a clear signal to the world. 'With our carrier strike group docking in Darwin, I think we're sending a clear signal, a signal of the UK's commitment to this region of the world. Our determination to keep the Indo-Pacific free and open, and that we stand together," he said. "Rohingya Muslims Using Bengali Language For Aadhaar Cards": BJP Leader
New Delhi: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Jagannath Sarkar on Friday reacted to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's recent remarks, emphasising Prime Minister Narendra Modi's commitment to promoting the Bengali language. Mr Sarkar alleged that Rohingya Muslims from Bangladesh have been learning Bengali and changing their names to obtain Aadhaar and voter cards in India. "Prime Minister Modi gives priority to the Bengali language... Rohingya Muslims from Bangladesh have learned Bengali and changed their names to obtain Aadhaar and voter cards here... The Supreme Court has also clearly stated regarding the steps taken by the Election Commission to conduct fair elections," he said. Referring to Mamata Banerjee's earlier statement, Mr Sarkar said the West Bengal Chief Minister highlighted the universal use of mother tongues, beginning with children saying "Maa," and condemned the targeting of Bengali speakers. She called for a new Bhasha Andolan to raise awareness and organise programmes against the alleged persecution of Bengali-speaking people. "We all speak our mother tongue. Children first speak "Maa" in their mother tongue. However, a language war has been declared over the Bengali language. Another Bhasha Andolan should raise awareness among everyone. People are tortured for speaking Bengali in many places. People cannot be detained just for speaking Bengali. We cannot tolerate this. Programmes should be organised on this issue," he said. Earlier, on the issue of the State of Individual Registration (SIR), West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had criticised the Election Commission of India (ECI), claiming that the electoral body had removed 40 lakh voters from the list in Bihar and intended to do the same in West Bengal. "ECI removed over 40 lakh names from the voters' list in Bihar, and now you want to do the same in Bengal? Try it, and we will launch a Gherao movement. We brought our people back from detention once, and we fought in court and won. We will not let this new law stand. We will fight, we will change it, we will not accept it", she said.
