Musk takes over Tesla's Europe, US sales after Omead Afshar's exit

Business Times3 days ago
[NEW YORK] Chief executive officer Elon Musk has assumed oversight of Tesla's sales in Europe and the US following the departure of longtime deputy Omead Afshar, sources familiar with the matter said.
Afshar was responsible for Tesla's sales and manufacturing operations in North America and Europe before leaving the electric vehicle (EV) maker late last month. Following his exit, Musk and Tom Zhu, a senior vice-president, are divvying up reporting lines as Tesla looks to recover from another quarter of declining vehicle deliveries.
Zhu, who's based in China, will continue to oversee Tesla's sales in Asia and take over manufacturing operations globally, according to the sources familiar with the changes, who declined to be identified discussing private information.
Representatives for Tesla did not respond to requests for comment. The carmaker's shares traded down 4.8 per cent as at 1.20 pm on Tuesday (Jul 1) in New York.
Tesla likely delivered around 389,400 vehicles in the three months that ended in June, according to analysts' estimates compiled by Bloomberg. That would be down roughly 12 per cent from a year earlier, following a 13 per cent drop in the first quarter.
With Musk alienating some car buyers in key markets and the rollout of more affordable models apparently delayed, investors are now bracing for a second consecutive annual drop in Tesla car sales. Analysts surveyed by Bloomberg are on average projecting the company will deliver around 1.7 million vehicles in 2025, down about 8 per cent from 1.8 million last year.

Musk's focus on Europe is noteworthy, considering he's called the region Tesla's weakest market. The company's new-vehicle registrations across Europe fell 28 per cent in May and plunged 37 per cent to the first five months of the year, as Chinese electric-car makers led by BYD gained ground.
The CEO likely has contributed to Tesla's demand issues, with polls finding Musk is viewed negatively in major electric car markets, including Germany and the UK. He's also endorsed far-right parties and candidates in Europe, spurring protests and acts of vandalism in France, Italy and elsewhere.
After pledging to turn his focus back to Tesla following his months-long stint in Washington, Musk also has repeatedly feuded with US President Donald Trump, threatened to start a new political party and vowed to fund primary challenges against members of Congress who vote for the US spending bill.
With Zhu now responsible for manufacturing globally, his direct reports include Hrushi Sagar, who oversees Tesla's factory in Fremont, California, and Jason Shawhan, who oversees its plant in Austin, sources familiar with the matter said. Troy Jones remains the vice-president of North America sales and now reports to Musk, these sources said, declining to speak publicly on the matter.
It's unclear if the revised management structure is permanent or if reporting lines could still change.
Zhu joined Tesla in April 2014 and quickly rose through the ranks, leading the construction and opening of the company's first overseas factory in Shanghai as vice-president of Greater China. In April 2023, he was promoted to senior vice-president of automotive operations, expanding his remit to global production, sales, deliveries and service, and moving to the US.
Tesla sent Zhu back to China and he returned to a more regional role last year, after Tesla encountered a number of technological and regulatory obstacles related to launching its advanced driver-assistance features.
Chinese authorities have since released draft guidelines concerning the transmitting of automotive data overseas, a move seen as potentially clearing the path for a broader rollout of Tesla's driver-assist functions in the country. BLOOMBERG

Trump says US will start talks with China on TikTok deal this week

[NEW YORK] US President Donald Trump said on Friday (Jul 4) he will start talking to China on Monday or Tuesday about a possible TikTok deal. He said the United States 'pretty much' has a deal on the sale of the TikTok short-video app. 'I think we are gonna start Monday or to China, perhaps President Xi or one of his representatives, but we would pretty much have a deal,' Trump told reporters on Air Force One. Last month, Trump extended to Sep 17 a deadline for China-based ByteDance to divest the US assets of TikTok. A deal had been in the works this spring to spin off TikTok's US operations into a new US-based firm, majority-owned and operated by US investors, but it was put on hold after China indicated it would not approve it following Trump's announcements of steep tariffs on Chinese goods. Trump said the United States will probably have to get a deal approved by China. When asked how confident he was that China would agree to a deal, he said, 'I'm not confident, but I think so. President Xi and I have a great relationship, and I think it's good for them. I think the deal is good for China and it's good for us.' REUTERS

Vietnam Q2 GDP growth quickens on strong exports, US trade deal brightens outlook

[HANOI] Vietnam's economy grew at a faster pace in the second quarter of this year led by strong exports, in an encouraging sign just days after US President Donald Trump said he would place lower-than-threatened 20 per cent tariffs on many Vietnamese products. Concerns over the South-east Asian manufacturing hub's outlook had been growing in the run up to the trade deal announced on Wednesday (Jul 2), particularly as the United States is Vietnam's biggest export market. Gross domestic product growth in the April to June quarter accelerated to 7.96 per cent year on year, from the 6.93 per cent in the first quarter, government data showed on Saturday. It was just short of Hanoi's full-year growth target of at least 8 per cent. 'Economic performance in the first half of this year was positive and close to our target amid global and regional economic uncertainties,' the National Statistics Office (NSO) said. Exports were a bright spot in the last quarter, rising 18.0 per cent to US$116.93 billion from a year earlier, while imports were up 18.8 per cent at US$112.52 billion, translating into a trade surplus of US$4.41 billion, the NSO data showed. Trump announced on Wednesday the United States and Vietnam reached a trade deal, under which Vietnamese goods would face a 20 per cent tariff, with trans-shipments from third countries through Vietnam also facing a 40 per cent levy. Vietnam could import US products with a zero per cent tariff. The tariff rates were lower than an initial 46 per cent rate threatened by Trump in April. Vietnam hailed the deal as a boost for business and said negotiators were working to finalise details, as business groups awaited clarity on the finer points to assess the impact of the new tariffs. The United States is the largest export market for Vietnam, a regional manufacturing hub housing several multinational companies such as Samsung Electronics and Foxconn. The United States recorded a trade deficit of US$123 billion with Vietnam last year, one of its highest globally. Vietnam is also home to several Chinese companies, which analysts said are likely the main targets for the 40 per cent tariff on trans-shipments. China is Vietnam's largest two-way trading partner on which it relies heavily for components and materials for its manufacturing industries. Fitch Solutions said in a note on Friday that Vietnam's exports and investment will remain strong for the rest of the year and signalled upside risks for its 2025 GDP growth forecast of 6.4 per cent. 'With the new 20 per cent tariff, we think the government will speed up industrial upgrading and shift exports from low-margin goods to higher value-added products such as semiconductors,' it said in a note. Dominic Scriven, founder and chairman of investment firm Dragon Capital, said the trade deal is 'net-positive' and the potential GDP hit is less severe than feared. 'With external trade risk now moderating, attention can return to the country's core growth engine, the domestic and private sector economy,' he said. REUTERS

China can work with France across range of industries, says foreign minister

[PARIS] China is ready to cooperate with France in industries such as nuclear power, aviation, artificial intelligence, green energy and biotechnology, Foreign Minister Wang Yi said. His comments in Paris capped a European visit that also took him to Brussels and Berlin. During his trip, China announced anti-dumping duties on European brandy while exempting major cognac makers that agreed to minimum price levels. That matter has been 'properly resolved', Wang said. China also is willing to strengthen strategic communication and coordination with France on Ukraine and tensions in the Middle East, Wang said at a news conference with French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot.
