E-khata drive from October 22 to November 1
Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar on Tuesday announced that a massive e-khata awareness drive will be conducted in the city from October 22 to November 1. Teachers, Bescom bill collectors, and BBMP employees will participate in the campaign. 'We have records of 24 lakh khatas, including both A and B khatas, but only 6.5 lakh e-khatas have been obtained. Therefore, this large-scale drive is being organised,' said Mr. Shivakumar. Speaking about the Cabinet's decision to convert B Khatas to A Khatas, the Dy. CM stated that the eligibility criteria and application guidelines will be released by August 15. Additionally, the Dy. CM announced that a section of the Hebbal Flyover, a multi-level parking facility in Gandhi Bazaar, and a few improved traffic junctions will be inaugurated soon. He hinted that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah may be available on August 6 for the inauguration. Mr. Shivakumar also noted that the government is planning to implement several welfare schemes that will benefit between 10,000 and 15,000 people. As part of one such scheme, 3,700 pushcarts will soon be distributed to selected beneficiaries. Clean Bengaluru Mr. Shivakumar revealed that 10,354 complaints regarding waste disposal in public spaces have been received since the launch of the Clean Bengaluru programme, which allows citizens to report garbage issues. Objective of Op Sindoor remains unfulfilled as govt diplomacy has failed: Priyanka
New Delhi, July 29 (UNI) Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra stated today that while 'Operation Sindoor' was meant to send a strong message to Pakistan, its objective may have remained unfulfilled due to the government's failure on the diplomatic front. "The purpose of 'Operation Sindoor' was to teach Pakistan a lesson, but perhaps this purpose remains unfulfilled, because our diplomacy has failed," Priyanka Gandhi said. 'As proof of this failure,' she said, 'a Pakistani general, whose hands were stained with blood, was seen having lunch with the President of the United States shortly after the operation.' The Wayanad MP made these remarks while participating in a debate on Operation Sindoor in the Lok Sabha. She further added that if the mission's goal was to eliminate terrorism, then Pakistan's appointment as the chair of the United Nations' Counter-Terrorism Committee has seriously undermined that objective. Priyanka asked, 'Will the Prime Minister take responsibility for this? Does he have the courage to do so?' She also demanded clarity in Parliament, saying, 'If our aircraft were not damaged during the operation, then give the House a straightforward answer.' She accused the Modi government of evading accountability. 'This government consistently avoids tough questions. Its political cowardice is unmatched,' she remarked. 'For them, everything is about politics, PR, publicity, and image-building. They are so absorbed in self-promotion that they've become blind to the real concerns of the people,' Priyanka Gandhi added. She also criticized leaders of the ruling party for repeatedly invoking the 2008 Mumbai attacks. 'When the terrorist attack happened in Mumbai, the terrorists were killed on the spot. The one terrorist who survived was hanged in 2012. At that time, the Chief Minister of Maharashtra and the Union Home Minister took responsibility and resigned. Back then, the government was accountable to the people and to this land.' She further said, 'Rajnath Singh ji was the Home Minister during the time of Pulwama, Uri, and Pathankot, and today he is the Defence Minister.' Taking a dig at Home Minister Amit Shah, she said, 'Under his watch, Manipur burned, riots broke out in Delhi, and the Pahalgam attack occurred. So why is he still holding the same position?' She also praised her colleague Gaurav Gogoi for confronting the Home Minister in Parliament and saying, 'Wasn't it your responsibility in the Pahalgam attack?' UNI RBE RN

Special Court set to rule on 2008 Malegaon Bombing Thursday
Mumbai, July 29 (UNI) Nearly 17 years after a fatal explosion tore through the communally sensitive town of Malegaon, a special National Investigation Agency (NIA) court will finally deliver its verdict this Thursday, July 31. The 2008 blast, occurring on September 29 during the holy month of Ramzan and coinciding with the Navratri festival eve, claimed six lives and left 100 others injured in the Muslim-majority town in Maharashtra's Nashik district. The protracted legal journey reaches a pivotal moment after the court reserved its orders on April 19. While initially directing the seven accused to appear on May 8 for the judgement, the pronouncement was subsequently rescheduled for July 31. The complex investigation saw initial handling by the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), led by the late Special Inspector General Hemant Karkare, who was later killed during the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks. The ATS filed its chargesheet in 2009. However, the case was in 2011 transferred to the NIA, which submitted a supplementary chargesheet in 2016. Although the NIA largely concurred with the ATS's findings, it differed on specific aspects, notably recommending the dropping of stringent charges under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA), a recommendation the court accepted. The trial, conducted by the special court in Mumbai, proceeded under charges framed on October 30, 2018. The seven accused face prosecution under critical sections of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), including Sections 16 (committing a terrorist act) and 18 (conspiring to commit a terrorist act), alongside various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC): 120(b) (criminal conspiracy), 302 (murder), 307 (attempt to murder), 324 (voluntarily causing hurt), and 153(a) (promoting enmity between different religious groups). The accused standing trial are former BJP Member of Parliament Pragya Singh Thakur, retired Military Intelligence official Lieutenant Colonel Prasad Purohit, retired Major Ramesh Upadhyay, Ajay Rahirkar, Sameer Kulkarni, Sudhakar Chaturvedi, and Sudhakar Dhar Dwivedi. The prosecution presented a total of 323 witnesses during the lengthy trial. However, the proceedings were marked by the significant challenge of 34 witnesses turning hostile. The hearing of evidence concluded in September 2023, paving the way for the long-awaited verdict scheduled for this week. UNI AAA SSP
