New RM79mil Mara Professional College campus to serve Kapit students
The campus would have the capacity to accommodate up to 300 students and would emphasise soft skills instead of technical or TVET (Technical and Vocational Education and Training) courses.
Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi stated that the project was approved in 2019 but could not commence earlier due to various necessary processes that had to be completed.
'This project has been eagerly anticipated and is much needed, as it will be the only higher education institution available to students after secondary school in this remote area,' he said following a handover ceremony at the Kapit Civic Centre meeting room on Saturday (June 14).
Nanta mentioned that the original allocation for the project was RM90mil, but after an open tender process, the contract was awarded for RM79mil.
He said there would be only a one-time registration fee upon enrollment, with no tuition fees.
'Additionally, students will receive a monthly allowance of RM300,' he said.
The project, located on Jalan Song-Kapit, is scheduled for completion on Dec 5, 2029.
After the ceremony, Nanta attended the Gawai Dayak open house at Dewan Sarawak.

AEON Credit valuations to hinge on banking arm
AEON Bank is projected to see losses peak in FY26 and gradually ease from FY27 with breakeven targeted in FY28 and profitability by FY29. PETALING JAYA: Aeon Credit Service (M) Bhd 's valuations will likely be driven by the performance of its loss making subsidiary, AEON Bank (M) Bhd, which is Malaysia's first Islamic digital bank. AEON Credit's management expects the bank to only post a profit in financial year 2029 (FY29) and to run losses till then due to expansion and product development related costs. At its AGM on June 25, AEON Credit had guided to RM80mil to RM90mil in associate losses from its 50%-owned digital banking venture in FY26. 'This represents a 17.1% to 31.8% year-on-year (y-o-y) increase from the RM68.3mil loss recorded in FY25 and exceeds our RM75mil loss forecast by 7% to 20%. The updated guidance also surpasses consensus estimates of RM60mil by 33.3% to 50%. 'Further checks with AEON Credit revealed that the higher projected losses are driven by the rollout of expanded product offerings under AEON Bank, including a personal financing facility of up to RM10,000, business banking services and term deposit offerings,' CIMB Securities said in its report. The research house noted that the expansion entailed higher upfront costs, particularly in digital infrastructure and core banking systems, including cloud deployment, cybersecurity and regulatory compliance. AEON Bank is projected to see losses peak in FY26 and gradually ease from FY27 with breakeven targeted in FY28 and profitability by FY29. The financing company also guided to minimal impact on its business from the expanded sales and service tax (SST) apart from RM1.8mil in SST related costs for FY26 (year ending February). To improve its collections, AEON Credit expects to finalise discussions with two agencies to explore the potential implementation of a salary deduction scheme for civil servant borrowers by this month. This market segment accounts for 19% of its customer base. It might not fully mitigate the risk of rising impairments, particularly in light of elevated household debt levels and living costs. The recent increase in civil servant bankruptcies – triggered by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission's 'Op Sky' investigation and the implementation of Malaysia's 'second chance policy' – may continue to weigh on the creditworthiness of this segment, potentially limiting the effectiveness of the salary deduction mechanism over the longer term. AEON Credit's impairment losses surged 32.9% y-o-y in FY25, driven by an 18.4% y-o-y increase in delinquent accounts. This resulted in a higher net credit cost of 3.87% in FY25 (FY24: 3.35%) and an increase in the non-performing loans ratio to 2.64% (FY24: 2.57%).

Seeking to secure Pulau Ligitan with RM300 million security outpost
Published on: Friday, July 04, 2025 Published on: Fri, Jul 04, 2025 By: FMT Text Size: Federal and state officials say they want security at Pulau Ligitan fortified in view of the looming external cross-border criminal threats, including terrorism. (X pic) Kota Kinabalu: Malaysia is looking to secure the sovereignty of Pulau Ligitan, a small island and popular diving haven off the Tawau coast, according to top Federal and State government officials. Sources from the home and defence ministries, along with the maritime industry, revealed that a two-year study had recommended the establishment of a permanent security control outpost within 1km of Pulau Ligitan, located some 50km away from Tawau. Advertisement The officials said that the plan was to fortify security at Pulau Ligitan in view of the looming external cross-border criminal threats, including terrorism, given its close proximity to both the Philippines and Indonesia. The State and Federal governments are believed to be considering a budget of up to RM300 million to develop a comprehensive outpost, including living quarters for up to 60 personnel on a 24-hour rotation. The project, slated to be carried out by a private contractor, is understood to be awaiting government approval and budgetary allocation. The officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, revealed that the environment department is presently conducting an environmental impact assessment, while the Royal Malaysian Navy has been tasked with hydrographic mapping around Pulau Ligitan, where currently only a lighthouse stands. 'We see this as an effort to firmly secure our maritime sovereign assets in view of the growing maritime territorial disputes in the Celebes and Sulu Seas, involving Indonesia and the Philippines. 'Without effectively securing Ligitan, we cannot open the island, smaller than a football field at low-tide, for tourists and develop resorts around it, similar to what has been done at Sipadan about 28km away from it,' the source told FMT. The government, the source added, had 'learnt its lessons' from territorial disputes involving Pulau Batu Puteh with Singapore, Limbang with Brunei and the Ambalat oil and gas sea-block in the Celebes Sea with Indonesia. Following the Abu Sayyaf group's abduction of 21 tourists in Sipadan on April 23, 2000, and the Lahad Datu intrusion by 235 Sulu militants on February 11, 2013, the National Security Council assumed control of Sipadan and Ligitan. The islands were later handed over to Sabah's Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment on July 6, 2019. The officials said the proposed outpost on Pulau Ligitan would be modelled after Station Lima, the forward operating facility established in 1983 on Pulau Layang-Layang (Swallow Reef) in the South China Sea. 'Ligitan's outpost is expected to include a power-generator set, reverse-osmosis system to convert salty sea-water into drinking-water, a watch-tower, firearms armoury, kitchen, dining hall, meeting room, launderette, sewage management system, fuel storage and machinery control room, jetty, wave-breaker barrier, helicopter pad and fast-interceptor and marine-park boats,' the source said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Jalan Serkam-Bemban a boost to tourism access to Melaka City
JASIN: The newly opened three-kilometre road connecting Serkam and Bemban will serve as a strategic alternative route for tourists travelling from the south to Melaka, particularly to the main tourist attractions in the city centre via the Jasin Toll, said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh. He said the new road, which links the Jalan Serkam-Bemban junction to the Jalan Kandang junction, would also help shorten travel time by up to five minutes, particularly for local residents travelling from Ayer Molek to the Jasin Toll. Ab Rauf said the RM20.2 million two-lane road project, which began on Nov 15, 2022 and was completed on April 25 this year, was funded through an allocation approved by the Rural and Regional Development Ministry under the First Rolling Plan of the 12th Malaysia Plan. 'This is an infrastructure project that not only links places but also connects the people's hopes for a brighter future. 'This is not just a road; it is a symbol of inclusive progress that proves the state government has never neglected the needs of the rural population,' he said after officiating the opening of Jalan Serkam-Bemban here today. Ab Rauf said the new road was also the result of close cooperation and shared determination between the state and federal governments, which would continue to serve as a catalyst for a more sustainable, inclusive and competitive Melaka. 'This project is also in line with the Melakaku Maju Jaya Strategic Plan 2035, as we aim to achieve not just rapid physical development but also balanced economic and social growth,' he said. Meanwhile, Ab Rauf said the federal government had approved nine new development and road upgrade projects following negotiations and applications submitted by the state government. He said all of the projects were currently at various stages of implementation, with the upgrading of Jalan Tun Hamzah from the JPJ Intersection to Semabok, involving an allocation of RM300 million, expected to begin in December. According to him, the construction of a new road from Kuala Linggi to Ayer Molek, Masjid Tanah, at a cost of RM125 million, is expected to begin in March next year, while the RM35.2 million road from the Rim junction to Kampung Ulu Jasin is slated for completion this August.
