He said the new road, which links the Jalan Serkam-Bemban junction to the Jalan Kandang junction, would also help shorten travel time by up to five minutes, particularly for local residents travelling from Ayer Molek to the Jasin Toll.
Ab Rauf said the RM20.2 million two-lane road project, which began on Nov 15, 2022 and was completed on April 25 this year, was funded through an allocation approved by the Rural and Regional Development Ministry under the First Rolling Plan of the 12th Malaysia Plan.
'This is an infrastructure project that not only links places but also connects the people's hopes for a brighter future.
'This is not just a road; it is a symbol of inclusive progress that proves the state government has never neglected the needs of the rural population,' he said after officiating the opening of Jalan Serkam-Bemban here today.
Ab Rauf said the new road was also the result of close cooperation and shared determination between the state and federal governments, which would continue to serve as a catalyst for a more sustainable, inclusive and competitive Melaka.
'This project is also in line with the Melakaku Maju Jaya Strategic Plan 2035, as we aim to achieve not just rapid physical development but also balanced economic and social growth,' he said.
Meanwhile, Ab Rauf said the federal government had approved nine new development and road upgrade projects following negotiations and applications submitted by the state government.
He said all of the projects were currently at various stages of implementation, with the upgrading of Jalan Tun Hamzah from the JPJ Intersection to Semabok, involving an allocation of RM300 million, expected to begin in December.
According to him, the construction of a new road from Kuala Linggi to Ayer Molek, Masjid Tanah, at a cost of RM125 million, is expected to begin in March next year, while the RM35.2 million road from the Rim junction to Kampung Ulu Jasin is slated for completion this August.

Seeking to secure Pulau Ligitan with RM300 million security outpost

(X pic) Kota Kinabalu: Malaysia is looking to secure the sovereignty of Pulau Ligitan, a small island and popular diving haven off the Tawau coast, according to top Federal and State government officials. Sources from the home and defence ministries, along with the maritime industry, revealed that a two-year study had recommended the establishment of a permanent security control outpost within 1km of Pulau Ligitan, located some 50km away from Tawau. Advertisement The officials said that the plan was to fortify security at Pulau Ligitan in view of the looming external cross-border criminal threats, including terrorism, given its close proximity to both the Philippines and Indonesia. The State and Federal governments are believed to be considering a budget of up to RM300 million to develop a comprehensive outpost, including living quarters for up to 60 personnel on a 24-hour rotation. The project, slated to be carried out by a private contractor, is understood to be awaiting government approval and budgetary allocation. The officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, revealed that the environment department is presently conducting an environmental impact assessment, while the Royal Malaysian Navy has been tasked with hydrographic mapping around Pulau Ligitan, where currently only a lighthouse stands. 'We see this as an effort to firmly secure our maritime sovereign assets in view of the growing maritime territorial disputes in the Celebes and Sulu Seas, involving Indonesia and the Philippines. 'Without effectively securing Ligitan, we cannot open the island, smaller than a football field at low-tide, for tourists and develop resorts around it, similar to what has been done at Sipadan about 28km away from it,' the source told FMT. The government, the source added, had 'learnt its lessons' from territorial disputes involving Pulau Batu Puteh with Singapore, Limbang with Brunei and the Ambalat oil and gas sea-block in the Celebes Sea with Indonesia. Following the Abu Sayyaf group's abduction of 21 tourists in Sipadan on April 23, 2000, and the Lahad Datu intrusion by 235 Sulu militants on February 11, 2013, the National Security Council assumed control of Sipadan and Ligitan. The islands were later handed over to Sabah's Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment on July 6, 2019. The officials said the proposed outpost on Pulau Ligitan would be modelled after Station Lima, the forward operating facility established in 1983 on Pulau Layang-Layang (Swallow Reef) in the South China Sea. Safer, more comfortable homes for Orang Asli in Melaka next year

Melaka government will launch a new initiative next year to build and repair homes for Orang Asli communities. State rural development, agriculture and food security committee chairman Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh said the initiative through Melaka Housing Board was to ensure Orang Asli communities were not excluded from state government aid or development programmes. 'To date, we have received 70 requests for home repairs or new houses from Orang Asli residents. 'Work will begin in phases next year, based on need and priority,' he told Bernama at the Orang Asli Entrepreneurs Carnival (Kuoa) at Dataran Pahlawan in the city centre. The event was launched by Rural and Regional Development Ministry deputy secretary-general (Policy) Datuk Abdul Kahar Abdullah. Dr Muhamad Akmal said the state had received allocations from Orang Asli Development Department (Jakoa) to repair two homes and build one new unit, but funds were insufficient to address all requests. 'We received many reports of dilapidated houses,' he said, adding that the state executive council had agreed to provide additional support. The state has also introduced other assistance, including health insurance and death benefit schemes, and aid for students. Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (Fama) was also helping Orang Asli entrepreneurs promote and market their forest-based products, he said. In conjunction with World Tourism Day and the World Tourism Conference 2025 in September, Orang Asli crafts, food and forest products will also be showcased to both domestic and international visitors. 'So far, around 20 Orang Asli entrepreneurs in Melaka show strong potential, especially with forest-based products that have added value,' Dr Muhamad Akmal said.
