'Needed To Hear Those Words...': De Paul Opens Up Messi's Advice Following Miami Switch
Inter Miami new recruit, Rodrigo De Paul, expressed his delight to be able to share the locker room with national side skipper Lionel Messi on the club level too, following his move to the MLS from La Liga side Atletico Madrid.
De Paul revealed that he had always enjoyed playing alongside the eight time Ballon d'Or winner in national colours, and added that playing for the same club would permit the duo, who played a crucial role in Albiceleste's third World Cup title, to spend more time together.
'Every time we would meet in the national team, the day-to-day was amazing, but at the end of the day, it ended up being quite short," De Paul reflected.
'I also wanted to feel that sensation of playing alongside the best," he added.
The Herons secured the 31-year-old on loan before the deal becomes permanent in 2026, with the transfer reportedly around £15 million.
De Paul started his career at Racing Club before moving to Valencia in 2014. The midfielder joined Udinese in 2016, then moved back to La Liga with Atletico Madrid in 2021.
De Paul had a couple of offers from European outfits ahead of his move to American shores, but the Argentine opted to play alongside Messi and expressed his interest in learning about the new territory he picked out.
De Paul, widely recognised for his role as a defensive midfielder, joins the support team Miami has built around their superstar Messi. He follows in the footsteps of Luis Suarez, Sergio Busquets, and Jordi Alba, joining the legendary player from Rosario in the United States after Messi's move last year.
'He told me, 'I know what you can give me on the field. I know who you are,'" De Paul revealed what his compatriot told him following his move to the Florida-based club.
''I'm only going to evaluate what you do on the field. As long as you play and you're feeling well, I know the class of player that you are.' I needed to hear those words," he averred.

What is an Olympics task force? Trump signs order ahead of 2028 LA games to avoid another Paris ‘disgrace'
President Donald Trump is expected to sign an executive order on Tuesday establishing a task force for the 2028 Summer Olympics and Paralympics, which will be held in Los Angeles during his term. Trump will sign an executive order creating a task force for the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. REUTERS/Kent Nishimura/File Photo(REUTERS) 'During his first term, President Trump was instrumental in securing America's bid to host the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles,' said White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt, adding that the president would work to make the event 'the most exciting and memorable in history.' 'The President considers it a great honor to oversee this global sporting spectacle in his second term,' according to her statement Monday. ALSO READ| US to 'substantially raise' India's tariffs over Russian oil purchase: Donald Trump The executive order creating the task force was first reported by Reuters. Trump has been an enthusiastic booster for major international sporting events scheduled to occur in the US under his watch, boasting about both the Olympics and the 2026 FIFA World Cup. 'I got the World Cup and I have the Olympics and I did it,' Trump said at an event in Iowa in July. Trump tapped a similar task force earlier this year for the World Cup that will be hosted in the US, Canada and Mexico next year, appointing Andrew Giuliani, the son of former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani — one of the president's staunchest allies — to be its director. What will the Olympics task force do? That task force was established to coordinate departments and agencies across the federal government to assist in organizing and carrying out the World Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup, a separate tournament that was held earlier this year. Both the Olympics and the World Cup are expected to draw large numbers of spectators — as well as many international tourists — bringing logistical and security challenges. Some Trump administration critics have expressed concerns that his effort to crack down on undocumented immigration and restrict travel from some countries could complicate efforts to host those sporting events. Trump has promised he will facilitate travel and visa access for World Cup teams and supporters. The president has regularly attended premier sporting events since his return to office, including the Super Bowl, Daytona 500, a UFC fight, the NCAA men's wrestling championships and the FIFA Club World Cup final, which took place in New Jersey. World Champion Gukesh acknowledges the massive achievement of Divya Deshmukh: 'It is not easy to win the tournament'
World Champion of Chess, D Gukesh, acknowledges the grand achievement of Divya Deshmukh, who recently won the FIDE Women's World Cup in Batumi. read more In a span of just two years, Indian chess has soared to the exosphere. Whether it's the Olympiad, the World Championship, or the FIDE World Cup, the Indian flag is flying high in every aspect of the Chess bloc. After D Gukesh's historic World Championship victory, all eyes are on Divya Deshmukh, who is making similar strides in the women's category. The 19-year-old recently clinched the FIDE Women's World Cup, held in Batumi, Georgia, and qualified for the Candidates tournament. Moreover, she also completed the last norm required to become a Grandmaster and claimed the title in the best way possible. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Gukesh acknowledges Divya's massive achievement As class often recognises class, Divya's ascension has been noted by Gukesh, who also had a few things to say about the achievement of India's newest Grandmaster. 'We (Gukesh and Divya) basically grew up together. We played in the same tournaments right from when we were eight or nine years old. The way Divya won the World Cup was really inspiring. It is not easy to win the tournament, you have to play regularly for a month. I have played the World Cup two times, so I know how difficult it is to win,' Gukesh said in a Velammal Nexus event that was organised to felicitate Mount Everest conqueror Ashish. 'Both of them (Divya and losing finalist, veteran Koneru Humpy) played amazingly well. For Indian chess, it is important that we have good results in both men (open) and women." Having played the FIDE World Cup twice, World Champion Gukesh will aim to win the whole thing when he takes part in the tournament, slated to take place later in the year in India. 'For sure, I will take part in the World Cup. I am really excited and looking forward to it. In chess, we do not have many knockout events, so the World Cup is the biggest knockout tournament. After the Olympiad (in 2022), India hosting a big event is important for Indian chess,' added Gukesh, who will be gunning for his maiden WC trophy. Given Divya has already bagged the prize, India will complete a World Cup double should Gukesh or any other contender from India go on to win the competition.
