ZIM vs SA 1st Test: South Africa to test new players against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo
Captain Temba Bavuma has not recovered from a hamstring injury sustained in the five-wicket win at Lord's, while batters Aiden Markram, Ryan Rickelton and Tristan Stubbs, and bowlers Kagiso Rabada, Marco Jansen and Lungi Ngidi, are all rested.
The latter will be available for the second Test, but with seven of the XI who started at Lord's missing the series opener at the Queen's Sports Club, it will be a new-look line-up with much to prove.
Matthew Breetzke, Dewald Brevis and 19-year-old Lhuan-dre Pretorius are all young, attacking batters, and it is likely at least two of the three will play. The more experienced Lesego Senokwane could also make his international debut.
The expected slow wicket means stand-in captain Keshav Maharaj and off-spinning all-rounder Prenelan Subrayen will likely both play, but firebrand 19-year-old fast bowler Kwena Maphaka, who debuted against Pakistan earlier this year, could also be given a chance. Uncapped seamer Codi Yusuf is also in the squad.
'I think there's a lot of guys who want to prove a point, why they're here, and how well they've played over the last couple of domestic seasons to get here,' all-rounder Wiaan Mulder told reporters.
'We look at ourselves as world champions. That's the standard we set for ourselves. Everybody has that in the back of their mind. We are not trying to become something new. The guys that are going to fill a spot or take someone like Ricks' (Rickelton) or Marco's (Jansen) place are going to put them under pressure when they come back.'
Zimbabwe will also be missing several of its regular players, including the injured pair of batter Ben Curran and new-ball bowler Richard Ngarava. Experienced middle-order batter and spin option Sikandar Raza has opted to play in Major League Cricket over this period.
'There's a real buzz around the squad. I think they're very excited. I'm super excited for the challenge that lies ahead and the guys are amped for it,' Zimbabwe's South African-born coach Justin Sammons said.
'They're looking forward to testing themselves and showing what they're capable of. I think they really want to make a statement over the next couple of weeks.'
South Africa has won eight of its previous nine Tests against Zimbabwe, with a single draw in 2001, which was also its only previous fixture in Bulawayo.

‘Commentary became a diss about bowlers': R Ashwin questions why India batters aren't scoring ‘daddy hundreds'
Former India off-spinner R Ashwin has slammed critics for taking a swipe only at the bowlers after the harrowing defeat to England in the first Test when Shubman Gill's side failed to defend a 370-run total in the fourth innings at Leeds. Ashwin, who retired as India's most successful World Test Championship wicket-taker last year, said that experts and commentators immediately turned their focus only on the bowlers, while the batters failed to shore up India's totals to above-average scores on batting-friendly wickets. India became the first side to lose a Test despite witnessing five individual centuries in the match across both innings, where the side suffered lower-order collapses. Captain Shubman Gill's 147 was the highest score of the five centuries India tallied while putting up 471 and 364-run totals. 'Once 370 was chased down (in the first Test), I thought the commentary became a diss about the Indian bowlers. I felt that the narrative built was pointing towards how Indian bowlers failed to win the match. I saw a show where someone said Siraj was unlucky to not be among wickets. I do agree he bowled well in the second innings, but the economy rate, you can't let go and hope that things fall in place. In Tests, you have to build your bowling gradually from Day 1, and the rewards will come in the final innings,' Ashwin highlighted. 'If you give away a lot of runs in the first innings, you tend to get conservative to stem the flow, and you won't get wickets in this approach. If I was Morkel, I would tell the other bowlers not to do much since Bumrah is there. As the old saying goes, bowl three maidens, and you will get a wicket. Don't you think a wicket would fall after three maidens in a row against this England side? Against this side, if you are giving two runs an over, it is as good as bowling a maiden,' he added.

Corbin Bosch scripts HISTORY, becomes first player in the world to achieve this unprecedented feat in Test cricket
Corbin Bosch New Delhi: Corbin Bosch started his Test career with a bang as South Africa crushed Zimbabwe by a record 328 runs to win the first of the two-match series at Queens Park Oval in the Bulawayo. It was the 9th straight Test victory by South Africa which is their longest in the format. Bosch produced a stellar all-round performance as he scored his maiden Test century with an unbeaten 100 in the first innings. Then he presented his talent with the ball claiming a five-wicket haul in the second innings to complete an excellent performance. Corbin Bosch scripts history Bosch has got a great start in Test cricket, as he has scored 217 runs in 4 innings where his average stands at a great 108.50 besides 10 wickets to his name at a very modest 19.10. His debut came in the year 2024 against Pakistan at Centurion where he grabbed four wickets in the first innings as well as 81 scoring runs with the bat. But due to a duck in the second innings he was dropped and got only one wicket. Bosch is the first test player in history to have recorded four or more wickets in a Test innings, and 80 or more runs on either side in his first 2 Test innings. He becomes the second cricketer to perform this rare double in his debut match and first since New Zealand Bruce Taylor got a five-wicket haul (5-86) and made 105 runs against India in 1965 at the Eden Gardens. Although Taylor also picked a five-wicket haul in his second match at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai (5-26, 3-76), his batting performance in the game remained poor with 8 and 21 in the first and second innings respectively. Taylor is the only cricketer in Test cricket history to have the rare feat of a century and five-wicket haul on first appearance. In the meantime, Bosch is now fifth fastest (jointly) to score this accomplishment and is equally lauded with Jack Gregory and Roston Chase, and Brian Bennett. The first pace bowler to have this kind of achievement in 60 years, since Taylor, is Bosch. In the meantime Bosch has become the first South African to have made this unique double in 23 years after Jacques Kallis. He is the fourth South African player to achieve the feat and second after the readmission of the South African country to global cricket. Although Kallis is still the only South African ever to have achieved the double twice, Bosch continously remains the first ever to have done this away on a Test.
