Ellen DeGeneres fled the States - now she must acknowledge her privilege

Let's not risk that by becoming a sanctuary of celebrity convenience (Picture:)
Ellen DeGeneres has officially joined the expat celebrity club.
In a conversation with broadcaster Richard Bacon in Cheltenham last weekend, she confirmed that she and her wife, Portia de Rossi, decided to stay in the UK after waking up to the news of Donald Trump's re-election last year.
It's not hard to understand why. As someone who worked on Kamala Harris' campaign, believe me when I tell you that I know how that feels.
Ellen is a gay woman in her sixties and the second Trump term brings with it a terrifying new wave of assaults on LGBTQ+ people in the US, including efforts to reverse same-sex marriage and a complete ban on trans people serving in the military.
There's real fear and pain behind her decision.
Hardly anybody else gets to do what Ellen (left) and Portia (right) did (Picture:for RH)
But it's also true that this move, framed in quaint tales about chickens and charming architecture, is a glaring example of how celebrities treat immigration like a lifestyle choice – a kind of moral Airbnb.
Hardly anybody else gets to do what Ellen and Portia did.
They didn't have to apply for asylum or prove they were at risk. They didn't face months in detention centres or fight through legal appeals. They flew in, saw the rolling hills and historic towns, and decided to stay.

Portia shipped her horses across the Atlantic. Ellen Instagrammed her runaway sheep.
Meanwhile, millions of people fleeing real persecution – including other LGBTQ+ people from countries far less safe than the US – are met with suspicion, bureaucracy, and deportation.
The decision for Ellen to leave, then, is understandable (Picture: Instagram @ellendegeneres)
In March, it was reported that Venezuelan gay asylum seeker Andry José Hernández Romero was deemed a 'security threat' to the US, seemingly for the crime of having two crown tattoos – a symbol that is commonly associated with the country's biggest gang.
He was sent to a maximum security prison in El Salvador as part of Donald Trump's mass deportation campaign.
A US judge scolded Trump in April for these types of deportations that she said 'shocks the conscience'.

Migrants seeking protection from Central American gangs or anti-LGBTQ+ militias are routinely detained in ICE's third-world condition facilities for months, sometimes years.
Children have died in custody. And under Trump, the asylum system has been weaponised beyond recognition, with fast-track removals and no due process now common practice.
And before you all start commenting nonsense about how I'm just a 'loony liberal' who wants 'uncontrolled open borders', that is not the point (nor what I'm arguing).
This is simply the reality of the landscape Ellen left behind – and never mentioned, from what I can see.

There was no nod to the brutality of US immigration. No solidarity expressed with those who are trapped by the very systems she's able to sidestep – just what appears to me to be a soft focus on village charm, polite locals, and snow.
Ellen is right. Things are bad and getting worse in the United States. But that doesn't make her decision to flee politically brave. It makes it personal – and deeply privileged.
And the moral collapse doesn't stop at the border – the same border where an eight-year-old girl died in custody after being denied medical care. All while the nodding dogs in the Republican Party cheer him on.
A country that once fought with us to defend democracy and liberate our allies abroad now shrugs at genocide. Its leader calls political opponents 'vermin', echoing fascist leaders at rallies, and chooses Putin over freedom.
Ellen's tale of 'simpler' life in the Cotswolds plays like a lifestyle rebrand (Picture: Instagram @ellendegeneres)
The decision for Ellen to leave, then, is understandable, but only the rich and famous Americans who can afford to just 'stay here' could have the gall to frame it as noble.
When others try to escape violence or discrimination, they're branded criminals, illegals, or queue-jumpers.
There is a version of this story that could be empowering, but Ellen's tale of 'simpler' life in the Cotswolds plays like a lifestyle rebrand.
As Ellen says, she's blunt. So here's some bluntness back: immigration is not a whimsical fantasy. It's a brutal, bureaucratic, often heartbreaking process, even for the average middle-class.
Until everyone has the same right to safety that she and Portia exercised without blinking, we should stop pretending that celebrity moves like this are acts of bravery. They're not. They're acts of gross privilege – plain and simple.

But, hey, listen, I get it. I also love our messy, over-apologetic, queue-loving little island too. The weather's grey, the trains are late, and somehow Farage made it into Parliament, but at our core, we're diverse, tolerant, and welcoming.
We didn't hesitate to stand up to Putin, opened our arms to refugees, led on abortion rights and equal marriage, and still serve as the world's moral compass.
Anyone who comes to our great country – and integrates – contributes, pays their taxes, and participates in our shared civic life is more than welcome.
After all, that is who we are as a country.
Let's not risk that by becoming a sanctuary of celebrity convenience.
Instead, let's stick to welcoming people who will integrate, contribute, and enrich our communities. Because in the end, it's those people – not the privileged few – who truly reflect the best of who we are.

Mack's heartbreak in Emmerdale as he hides his feelings

Mackenzie Boyd (Lawrence Robb) recently gave his wife Charity Dingle (Emma Atkins) an ultimatum in Emmerdale. If she didn't give up her plan to be a surrogate for granddaughter Sarah (Katie Hill)'s baby, their marriage was over. And in coming episodes, as the plan moves ahead, their relationship is in the balance. When Sarah had to have life-saving surgery that included having a hysterectomy, she knew that her dream of being a mother had been shattered. Unable to cope with his granddaughter's sadness at a time when he was also grieving the death of his son Nate (Jurell Carter), it was Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley) who first floated the idea of surrogacy as a way to help Sarah become a mum. It was soon clear that, because of Sarah's life-limiting condition of Fanconi anaemia, surrogacy agencies wouldn't consider helping her. Cain's one attempt at contacting a surrogate informally didn't work out either. So Charity came up with the idea of being the surrogate herself. 'Once she's set a decision in place she doesn't really back out of stuff,' Emma Atkins told us. 'She commits. She goes full pelt without thinking of any of the consequences.' So Charity went ahead and had the tests to see if she was suitable, reasoning that she could talk to her husband Mackenzie about it if she proved to be a suitable candidate. Unfortunately he got wind of the scheme before that could happen, courtesy of Eric Pollard (Chris Chittell) who was concerned that his grandson Jacob (Joe-Warren Plant) was making a mistake by getting involved as the sperm donor part of the scheme. Understandably, Mack was fuming. It wasn't that long ago that he and Charity lost a baby they were expecting when she had an ectopic pregnancy. In the wake of this he expressed a hope that they would try again, but Charity shut that down. Now Mack has been left trying – and failing – to understand why Charity would go through a pregnancy for Sarah, but not to have their child. Emma Atkins told us that Charity has some reservations, but prioritises Sarah: 'I think Charity just decides the best thing to do is back Sarah all the way. So you sort of see a lot of light and shade. One minute she's very for it, and the next minute, she's struggling with the obvious, with her health complications and her own as well being the age that she is so there's all of that.' More Trending For Mack, Charity's approach is incomprehensible. As she and Sarah get ready to go to the hospital for the procedure, he makes excuses and says he needs to work at Butlers. On his way there he bumps into Aaron (Danny Miller), who questions why he isn't at the hospital supporting Charity. Want to be the first to hear shocking EastEnders spoilers? He urges Mack to go and talk to his wife about his feelings, so Mack rushes to the fertility clinic, where Charity tells him the procedure went well. The family are in celebratory mood, but Mack has missed his chance to discuss his feelings. Later, Aaron again urges Mack to talk about how he's feeling to Charity, and when Charity is overwhelmed by too much TLC from Sarah and Jacob and sends them out, Mack grabs his chance to talk to her on her own. Four arrested after Trump protests across Scotland and UKIP rally

Police Scotland have confirmed that officers took action at various events across the country on Saturday and a number of people were arrested. At least four people have been arrested following a day of mass protests across Scotland. ‌ Scots turned out in force to demonstrate against Donald Trump 's visit to the country in both Aberdeen and Edinburgh, while in Glasgow a march organised by UK Independence Party (UKIP),calling for 'mass deportations' was met by hundreds of counter protesters. ‌ Police Scotland have confirmed that officers took action at various events across the country on Saturday, July 26. ‌ In Aberdeen, an 18-year-old man was arrested in connection with a number of outstanding warrants and will appear at court at a later date. While 56-year-old man will be subject of a report to the Procurator Fiscal following an alleged assault in Aberdeen city centre. ‌ In Glasgow, a 49-year-old woman was arrested in connection with an alleged obstruction of the police following an incident in George Square. A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal. A 50-year-old woman was issued with a Recorded Police Warning in connection with alleged threatening behaviour in Regent Terrace, Edinburgh. ‌ Trump arrived in Scotland on Friday and took to his Turnberry golf course on the first full day of his visit. Hundreds gathered in both Edinburgh and Aberdeen – near the site of the US President's other Scottish golf resort – to make their opposition to the president known. A major security operation surrounded him, with police officers and military personnel seen scouring the grounds ahead of Mr Trump teeing off. ‌ Sniffer dogs were seen patrolling the golf course in Ayrshire, with the Navy carrying out sweeps in the water beside the seaside course, while Army vehicles were spotted on the nearby A77 road. Police Scotland has asked for support from other forces across the UK to bolster officer numbers for the high profile visit – with Mr Swinney appealing to people to protest 'peacefully and within the law'. ‌ In Glasgow, protestors came together on Buchanan Street to oppose a rally organised by UKIP. In a post announcing the march, UKIP said the demonstration would 'send a message to Holyrood that we are taking our country back,' adding: 'the people of Glasgow demand mass-deportations.' UKIP estimated 200 would attend the march through the city centre. The counter protest, attended by trade unionists, faith organisations, and other anti-racist and anti-fascists, was organised by Stand Up to Racism Scotland. Sharing a video of the demo to social media, they said: 'Hundreds of anti-fascists and anti-racists from the trade unions, community and faith organisations have answered the call to say that fascists "shall not pass" in Glasgow.'

Donald Trump posts meme of Barack Obama - but people are distracted by JD Vance

It's a photoshopped version of the iconic image of OJ Simpson driving his white Bronco, with a squad of police cars in pursuit Donald Trump posted a meme comparing Barack Obama to OJ Simpson - but something else about the picture distracted people. ‌ It's a photoshopped version of the iconic image of OJ Simpson driving his white Bronco, with a squad of police cars in pursuit. ‌ In Trump's version, OJ is replaced by Obama, with the drivers of two police cars behind replaced by Trump and Vice President JD Vance. ‌ But after the US President posted the image on his Truth Social website, people started to notice Vance looked unusual. Closer inspection reveals Vance's face is in fact a meme of the Vice President, altered to make his face wider and with long hair. ‌ When this was pointed out on Twitter, Vance responded with a "laugh" emoji. Last week, Trump posted an AI generated video depicting President Obama being arrested in the Oval Office by FBI agents while Trump watches. Trump posted the image from his Turnberry resort in Scotland, where he is enjoying a weekend of golfing - with a huge police presence to protect him, paid for by UK taxpayers. ‌ But he's still facing questions about his links to dead paedophile Jeffrey Epstein - and has been pulling out all the stops to try get people to talk about literally anything else. One of the things he's brought up that he wishes people were talking about is a new conspiracy theory, claiming President Obama and his senior team used false intelligence to suggest Russia interfered in the 2016 election to help Trump win. ‌ The claims are nonsense, and are not backed up by the reams of documents they have presented as evidence. Yet, the President has continued the attacks on his predecessor, even threatening to have him prosecuted. Earlier, as reporters shouted questions about his friendship with Epstein over the fence at his golf course, his entourage played loud music - including Memory from the musical Cats and Bridge Over Troubled Water by Simon and Garfunkel.
