'Vibrant hub' vision for Hamilton town centre with lease of 50 retail units

Daily Record08-07-2025
The six-acre gateway site has been identified as key to South Lanarkshire Council's masterplan vision for the regeneration of Hamilton town centre to create a vibrant, accessible, and resilient town centre.
The new owner of Hamilton's Regent Shopping Centre is to lease out 50 retail units with the aim of creating a "vibrant hub" for the region.
Property development and asset management group Evergold has instructed Shepherd Chartered Surveyors to bring the units to market after acquiring the centre for an undisclosed sum last month.

Occupying a dominant position in Hamilton town centre, the Regent's positioning and scale means that it makes up a significant proportion of the town centre core.

The six-acre gateway site has been identified as key to South Lanarkshire Council's masterplan vision for the regeneration of Hamilton town centre to create a vibrant, accessible, and resilient town centre with a focus on living, leisure, healthcare and workspace as well as incorporating a significantly reduced retail element.
Radical plans include reducing the town centre's vacant retail spaces by more than two-thirds, building houses and creating new leisure uses including an urban park.
The sweeping changes would include knocking down both the Regent and New Cross shopping centres, repurposing or demolishing Bairds and the former Marks & Spencer, and creating a hotel or student accommodation on the site of Duke Street car park.
As reported by Lanarkshire Live, Evergold has had a series of "detailed discussions" with South Lanarkshire Council on the future of the town centre site which is part of a local authority masterplan to construct 450 new homes.

Tahir Ali, of Evergold, said: 'Our plans for the Centre are aligned closely with the Council's aim to have a diverse and sustainable mixed use town centre that not only serves its immediate catchment but also becomes a vibrant hub for the wider region.'
In addition to acting as sole letting agent, Shepherd Chartered Surveyors will assume an asset management role together with a property management role.

Calvin Molinari at Shepherd Chartered Surveyors said: 'This instruction follows our recent merger with Whyte & Barrie Chartered Surveyors to form a practice unrivalled in its delivery network of surveying services throughout Lanarkshire.
'Our extensive expertise and experience within the Lanarkshire market make us best placed to deliver effective asset management and property management roles alongside actively marketing the available retail units at this gateway site to a range of prospective tenants.'
The 50 retail units, varying in size from 300 sq ft – 50,000 sq ft, are available on flexible lease terms. Interested parties should contact the sole letting agent on tel 0141 331 2807.

More accurate than my Fitbit and at a fraction of the price." One shopper did find the watch to be a bit temperamental, writing in a three-star review: "A nice convenient watch for a cheaper option than most smart watches. However, I'm having some trouble with it not counting all my steps." But someone else said: "I didn't have massive expectations for this watch as it was so reasonably priced and just wanted it as a step counter. Very surprised how brilliant it is! "A number of times has been mistaken for an Apple Watch. I get my calls on it, texts, the step counter and exercise register is bang on, and keeps battery for a week. The clocks is clear so are the texts." Another shopper remarked: "Excellent value for money, has so many features similar to Apple Watch which is what I needed. It's lightweight, screen is a good size and it synced to my phone with no issue. I also love that you can buy extra straps, so have the option of switching up the look." New nursery could be built on vacant land in Cambuslang

A planning application to construct a child daycare facility and associated parking on land near St Cadoc's Church has been submitted to South Lanarkshire Council (SLC). According to documents, applicant Hollytree Nursery states that this development would allow it to expand its services and 'address the increasing demand for childcare provision in the area'. If given the green light, the new nursery at Langcroft Drive would provide an additional 67 childcare places for children aged zero to five years. The design statement notes that the facility would be set across a single storey and would be of a modern design. The development would also feature seven dedicated staff parking spaces as well as four drop-off car parking spaces for parents. Hollytree Nursery further comments that if planning permission is granted, the nursery will create around 15 new jobs for childcare professionals and support staff. A date has not yet been set for a decision to be made. For further information, visit SLC's planning portal HERE.
