The Syedna began his sermon by reflecting on his father, the late 52nd leader, Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin's visit to Chennai for Ashara Mubaraka 50 years ago. He underscored the deep connection his father had with the city and the community.
Reflecting on the community's historical journey, Syedna Saifuddin noted how many members originally migrated from Sidhpur to Chennai in search of better livelihoods.
Ashara Mubaraka is a period from the 2nd to the 10th of Moharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar, dedicated to remembering Prophet Mohammed, his grandson Imam Husain, who, along with his family and companions, endured immense suffering at the Battle of Karbala in Iraq in 680.
During this solemn and sacred period, community members around the world gather in masjids and centres each morning and evening. The themes explored in Ashara Mubaraka, drawn from the Holy Quran, Islamic history, and Fatimi philosophy, connect centuries of teachings and tradition with contemporary moral and social issues facing the community and humanity at large.
The Syedna's sermons will revolve around a central theme, which will guide the spiritual reflections over the coming days.
Syedna announced that he would use each of his sermons this year to explore the universe, the planetary orbits, its celestial bodies, and ultimately, on the final day, the planet earth.
He drew parallels between the physical stars and planets and between key personalities from the history of Islam, who also, like the stars above, have had a lasting impact on the inhabitants of the earth, specifically upon adherents to the faith.

Syedna stated that this cosmic theme would allow for a rich exploration of the harmony between faith and science, declaring that when viewed from the right perspective, both religion and science bolster and strengthen one another.
Congress MLA from Mumbai Amin Patel who flew into the city to attend Syedna's sermon on the first day of his Ashara Mubaraka sermons said that it was uplifting.
"For over three hours, Syedna sahab kept us engaged in his deeply thoughtful sermon.
We heard him in utmost attention and I was overwhelmed with the way he explained the purpose of life on this earth. We did not realise how over three hours flew while we heard him," said Patel.
While explaining the cosmic forces that draw stars to one another and maintain celestial bodies in their orbits, Syedna underscored the immense power of love in bringing people together. He explained that 'mohabbat', love in Arabic, is a powerful force for good, especially when that love inspires people towards acts of charity and kindness.
He praised the Dawoodi Bohra inhabitants of Chennai for their commitment to their fellow denizens of South India's largest city, and for serving their brothers and sisters from all communities and faiths.
Syedna concluded the sermon by recounting the sacrifices made by Prophet Muhammed's grandson, Imam Husain, and the tragic sequence of events that led to his martyrdom in Karbala (Iraq) in 680. He explained how remembering this tragedy, year after year, empowers the community, increasing its empathy and rekindling its dedication to the universal values of love, harmony and humanity.
Around 43,000 Dawoodi Bohra community members have gathered in Chennai for the occasion. This includes 8,000 Bohra residents of Chennai and 35,000 guests who have travelled from across the world to participate.
The primary venue for the congregations is Saifee Masjid at SMB Street, with live telecasts extending to nine other centres across the city, including the Wings Convention Centre, YMCA Ground and Binny Ground.
Beyond Chennai, community centres in Coimbatore, Erode and Salem in Tamil Nadu and other cities in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Kerala and Madhya Pradesh, will also benefit from the live broadcast.
Under the guidance and leadership of Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin, these learning sessions are designed to reinvigorate the community's faith as they navigate the complexities of modern life. The sermons inspire devotees to seek knowledge in the light of the Holy Quran and to strive to emulate the noble qualities of Prophet Muhammed and his family members.

Will Schools Be Closed On 7th July 2025 For Muharram? Holiday Status Depends On This Crucial Factor!

As the sacred Islamic month of Muharram approaches, confusion brews across India about whether Monday, July 7, 2025, will be a public holiday. For students and parents eagerly planning the week ahead, the answer hinges on one critical detail: the moon sighting. What Is Muharram and Why It's Significant Muharram marks the beginning of the Islamic New Year and holds deep spiritual significance for Muslims worldwide. It is observed on the first day of the month of Muharram in the Hijri calendar, which is based on the lunar cycle. In India, the exact date for Muharram shifts annually and depends entirely on the sighting of the moon, making advance confirmation a challenge. Tentative Date and Current Predictions As per most government holiday calendars, Muharram in 2025 is tentatively set for Sunday, July 6. However, this is not set in stone. If the moon isn't sighted as expected on the evening prior to the observance, and subsequently the holiday, it could shift to Monday, July 7. This uncertainty is why many schools and government bodies are waiting before making any official announcements. Will Schools Be Closed? Since Muharram is classified as a gazetted holiday, most government offices, banks, and schools typically remain closed in states that officially recognise the day. However, as of now, no blanket nationwide closure for July 7 has been confirmed. Several schools are expected to wait until the moon sighting and state-level circulars before issuing closure notices. States like Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Telangana, West Bengal, and Kerala, which have a larger Muslim population, are likely to observe a public holiday, depending on when Muharram falls. Why Is There So Much Confusion? Due to regional moon sighting variations, Muharram is sometimes observed on different dates in different states. This often results in last-minute notifications and confusion for schools and offices. In some regions, holidays are announced just 24 hours in advance, leaving parents and students scrambling to adjust. What Should Parents and Students Do? 1. Keep an eye on local school circulars and district education department updates 2. Watch news channels or follow state government websites for official holiday declarations 3. Stay informed about moon sighting announcements from local mosques or religious committees While the central government has listed July 6 as the tentative date for Muharram, July 7 could also be declared a holiday, depending on celestial observation. Until then, it's best to stay alert and flexible, especially if you're in a region known for observing the Muharram holiday.

CIO launches one-million child tree planting movement

Vijayawada: The Children Islamic Organisation (CIO) has launched an environmental campaign across the country titled 'Hands in Soil, Hearts with India', with a big goal of getting one million children across India to plant and care for trees between June 25 and July 26. Addressing a press conference at the Jamaat-e-Islami Hind State office its AP president Muhammad Rafeeq said, 'CIO, a national platform for the all-round development of children based on Islamic values, believes that care for nature must begin early and that children can change things when given the right guidance. This campaign seeks to start a spirit of care, responsibility, and love for nature in every child and aims to make tree planting a joyful and purposeful act of national service.' Elaborating further, Ramla stated, 'The reason behind this campaign is clear: the Earth is getting hotter, few trees are left, and air quality is worsening. Talking about how the campaign will unfold, AP secretary of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind Mohamed Gous Nizami said, 'As part of this initiative, children will plant trees in schools, madrasas, mosques, neighbourhood parks, and even in front of their homes. Each child will be encouraged to name their tree, care for it like a friend, and record their experience through drawings, crafts, poetry.' Discussing the collaboration with the government and slogans to be used in the environmental campaign, CIO state convener Firdouse Aqtar stated, 'In order to scale this campaign effectively, CIO is actively collaborating with government departments to provide healthy saplings, identify suitable planting locations, offer educational resources on plants and animals, and protect green zones.

The Islamic month of Muharram , marking the beginning of the new Hijri year, began in India on Friday, June 27, following the sighting of the crescent moon on June 26. Observed as one of the four sacred months in Islam, Muharram carries deep spiritual and historical weight, particularly for the Shia Muslim community. This year, Ashura—the 10th day of Muharram and its most significant date—will fall on Sunday, July 6, as per the Masjid-e-Nakhoda Markazi Rooyat-e-Hilal Committee's declaration. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 모공각화증, 자꾸 긁지말고 집에서 이렇게 해보세요 현명한소비자 Undo A sacred month of mourning and reflection Muharram is considered the second most revered month after Ramadan in the Islamic calendar . It is a time for prayer, introspection, and remembrance. For Shia Muslims , the month is primarily associated with mourning the martyrdom of Imam Hussain , the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, who was killed in the Battle of Karbala in 680 CE. Live Events To commemorate his sacrifice, Shia communities across the world participate in majlis ( religious gatherings ), mourning processions, and poetic recitations recounting the tragedy of Karbala. Some devotees engage in symbolic acts of self-flagellation as an expression of grief and solidarity with Imam Hussain's suffering. Sunni Muslims also mark Ashura , though in a different manner. Many observe the day by fasting and offering additional prayers, in keeping with traditions attributed to Prophet Muhammad. Beyond its rituals, Muharram serves as a time for Muslims to renew their faith, seek forgiveness, and reflect on the values of justice, sacrifice, and steadfastness. J&K steps up Muharram preparations In Jammu and Kashmir, where Muharram processions draw significant participation, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah reviewed the arrangements in a high-level meeting held last week. 'We will leave no stone unturned in our efforts, and there should be no shortcomings from our side,' he said, directing officials to ensure all necessary support for peaceful and orderly observances. Security, traffic management, medical services, and public coordination are expected to be in focus as the region prepares for Ashura next week.
