KOTA KINABALU (July 20): There is a possibility of another State Assembly sitting before its dissolution ahead of the coming state elections, said State Finance Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun.
Masidi made the statement when asked about the potential tabling of the Sabah Budget 2026.
He explained that the State Budget must be presented by the Finance Minister either before or after the state elections to avoid any disruption in government operations, including the implementation of programmes and the payment of civil servant wages.
'If the elections are held earlier, then I think we still have time to table the budget around November. But if the assembly is dissolved later, we might be able to table it around December,' he told reporters at the sidelines of the International Business Review (IBR) ASEAN Awards here on Saturday night.
When asked whether the budget would be tabled before or after the State Assembly is dissolved, Masidi said the decision rests with the Chief Minister.
On the possibility of another sitting before dissolution, he added, 'The possibility is always there.'
Previously, after the July 8 State Assembly sitting, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor had hinted that it might be the final session for the current term. When asked by reporters if it marked the end of the legislative term, he responded it was 'more or less,' noting that all bills beneficial to the state had already been passed.
Political analysts expect the dissolution of the state assembly after Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat) has held its congress from July 25-27.
They speculate that Hajiji is likely to call for polls before National Day on August 31 or after Malaysia Day on September 16.
Hajiji said that he would consult the presidents of all Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) component parties before making any move to dissolve the Sabah State Legislative Assembly.
The 16th Sabah State Legislative Assembly will be automatically dissolved on Nov 11 this year if it is not dissolved earlier.
Speaker Datuk Seri Kadzim M Yahya said the five-year term of the assembly is calculated from the date of the first sitting of the 16th Sabah State Assembly, which was on Nov 12, 2020, making Nov 11 this year the end of the term.
Gagasan Rakyat, PBS, STAR, SAPP, Usno, PCS, PHRS and LDP are members of GRS.
PBS and STAR have called for GRS to contest solo in the 17th State Election.

All eyes on Gagasan Rakyat as it holds AGM

KOTA KINABALU: Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah's (Gagasan Rakyat) annual general meeting this weekend (July 26, 27) will be a closely watched affair. Gagasan Rakyat, the anchor party of the ruling eight-party state coalition Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS), is expected to decide if GRS will go solo or solidify its current partnership with Pakatan Harapan. Over 2,000 delegates from 74 divisions are expected to attend the annual meeting led by Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, who is also Sabah Chief Minister. Gagasan Rakyat insiders are not expecting an outright resolution but the grassroots will likely give Hajiji and party supreme council members the mandate to decide on the party's stand for the coming Sabah Election, which is due by Nov 11. Hajiji has spoken in favour of continuing its electoral pact with Sabah Pakatan but said that any decision would have the consensus of others in GRS. He has said he had talked to Pakatan leaders including Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on a possible electoral pact. Coalition partner Sabah STAR, led by Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey Kitingan, wants GRS to go solo or at the very least, to give Pakatan a minimal number of seats and to contest under the GRS logo. Another partner, Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS), led by acting president Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam, said GRS should be the dominant party in any electoral pact and also said it would not have a pact with Barisan Nasional. Gagasan Rakyat holds the most seats in GRS with 26, while PBS and Sabah STAR hold 13 seats between them. GRS has a total of 42 seats, including those of other partners. Officiated by Hajiji, Gagasan Rakyat's AGM will kick off with a special seminar to be attended by over 400 division members, including from the women's, youth and women's youth wings. The three wings will hold their annual meetings on Saturday (July 26) followed by the Gagasan Rakyat AGM on Sunday (July 27).

Free rides on Penang ferries on Aug 31, Sept 15 and 16

GEORGE TOWN: The Penang Port Commission (SPPP) has announced free ferry services for Malaysians on Aug 31 as well as Sept 15 and 16 in conjunction with National Day and Malaysia Day. SPPP chairman Datuk Yeoh Soon Hin said the initiative supports the announcement by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, particularly the move to declare an extra public holiday on Sept 15 in conjunction with the Malaysia Day celebration, which will be held at the PICCA Convention Centre in Butterworth on Sept 16. "The free ferry service offered on these three important dates reflects SPPP's commitment as the Port Authority and Regulatory Body, along with Penang Port Sdn Bhd (PPSB) as the port operator, in encouraging Malaysians to use public transport when commemorating key national events. "In addition, this initiative will also help ease the burden on Malaysians," he said in a statement on Thursday (July 24). Yeoh also welcomed the government's strong commitment to introducing strategic measures that not only help ease the cost of living but also reflect a deep appreciation for and recognition of all Malaysians. – Bernama

Civil servants urged to enhance service quality after govt aid

PUTRAJAYA: The Public Service director-general Tan Sri Wan Ahmad Dahlan Abdul Aziz has called on civil servants to demonstrate greater dedication and diligence in their duties following the government's recent assistance measures. He emphasised that the initiatives, including cash aid and an extra public holiday, reflect the government's commitment to public welfare amid economic challenges. Wan Ahmad Dahlan described the aid as a manifestation of the 'rukun ihsan' principle, highlighting the government's compassionate approach. 'What was announced by the Prime Minister yesterday is something eagerly awaited by everyone, whether civil servants or the public,' he said. He expressed gratitude on behalf of civil servants, acknowledging the Prime Minister's efforts to alleviate financial burdens. The additional holiday on September 15, he noted, will allow civil servants to spend time with families and foster unity. 'This is something new, as Malaysia Day has only been celebrated on Sept 16,' he added. The director-general urged continued support for government policies, stressing the need for civil servants to remain aligned with leadership directives. 'We must always uphold and implement government policies to ensure effective service delivery,' he said. - Bernama
