Social media had a field day as bills from the Byohari Assembly went viral, revealing that Rs 1.07 lakh was allegedly withdrawn to apply just four litres of oil paint in a school in Sakandi, and Rs 2.3 lakh for 20 litres at another in Nipaniya village.
While 168 labourers and 65 masons were used for the wall in Sakandi, 275 labourers and 150 masons were employed in Nipaniya to paint 10 windows and four doors.
And yet, the true artistic genius lies not on the school walls, but in the paperwork. The construction firm, Sudhakar Construction, which carried out the work, managed to create a bill on May 5, 2025, which had already been verified a month earlier - on April 4 - by the principal of the Nipaniya school.
Even more magically, the bills, legally required to be accompanied by before-and-after photographs, were approved without a single photo.
District Education Officer Phool Singh Marpachi said, "Bills of these two schools are viral on social media. They are being investigated, action will be taken based on the facts that emerge."

AHMEDABAD: Days after the Mahisagar river bridge collapse tragedy in Vadodara district, the Gujarat government has approved the construction of a parallel two-lane bridge and approved Rs 212 crore for the project-related work. Several vehicles plunged into the Mahisagar river after a segment of the 40-year-old bridge near Gambhira village, connecting Anand and Vadodara districts, collapsed on July 9. The death toll rose to 20 on Friday, while the search for a missing person continues, officials said on Sunday. The old bridge near Gambhira village was a key link between central Gujarat and Saurashtra. Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel on Sunday granted administrative approval to the Roads and Buildings Department for the construction of a new bridge near Mujpur connecting Vadodara and Anand districts. The government has set a target to build the new structure in 18 months and the tendering process has been initiated, an official release stated. A detailed project report was recently prepared by the R&B Department after a survey. "Following the unfortunate collapse of the existing bridge, which disrupted connectivity between central Gujarat and Saurashtra and posed challenges for local commuters and students, the chief minister swiftly approved this new project," it said. R&B Department's superintending engineer NV Rathva said the existing two-lane Mujpur approach road will be expanded to four lanes and widened to seven metres. A 4.2 km stretch from the highway to the bridge will also be expanded to four lanes. "The chief minister has approved administrative sanction of Rs 212 crore for these works," he said. Meanwhile, the operation to trace a missing man continued in the Mahisagar river, officials said. The rescue teams were conducting searches with rubber boats and other necessary equipment, he said, adding the wreckage of the small vehicles was also salvaged.

‘ANERT corruption linked to illegal appointment', says Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Senior Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala on Sunday said the alleged corruption in ANERT had links with an illegal appointment there. Chennithala had recently demanded a comprehensive probe into alleged irregularities in the Rs 240-crore tender floated for installing solar pumps under the PM-KUSUM scheme. The former Leader of Opposition said the executive assistant of ANERT was hired by a consultancy firm illegally. The firm hired him at a high salary and deputed him to ANERT as the CEO's executive assistant. The person had earlier assisted the CEO in the procedures to appoint the firm as ANERT's consultant, Chennithala said. 'This shows how the firm got the consultancy contract,' he said. Further, Chennithala said ANERT receives funds worth crores from the Union and state governments. 'None of the ANERT staff has a role in the tender procedures to spend these funds. Either temporary staffers or private consultancy firms are involved in such procedures,' he said.

Bodinayakanur bypass work started sans our knowledge, say locals
THENI: Over 100 residents of Melachokkanathapuram and Meenakshipuram complain that the state highways department officials have started the construction of a bypass road between Anaikaraipatti Vilakku and Dharmathupatti in Bodinayakanur without seeking their permission or settling the compensation for the lands they parted with the project. Officials for the state highways department (project wing) proposed the construction of a bypass road between Anaikaraipatti Vilakku and Dharmathupatti at a cost of Rs 36 crore, and for this project, they summoned nearly 120 landowners for land acquisition in Bodinayakanur, Melachokkanathapuram, and Meenakshipuram. However, the land acquisition for this is not complete, and over 100 landowners are yet to receive compensation, sources said. Meanwhile, the department commenced its work on February 17 by doing a bhoomi puja. TNIE also had carried a report, 'Bypass work starts sans paying compensation, landowners in a spot,' on March 1 on the allegations. A Ramkrishnan of Melachokkanathapuram said, "Though other landowners and I were summoned by the DRO for land acquisition in 2023, February 12, 2025, and on March 24, 2025, the official did not turn up. Meanwhile, the state highways department completed around one kilometre of project work in Anaikaraipatti Vilakku." He added, "Officials from the state highways department later came to my agricultural land, removed the boundary stones, and started constructing a box culvert without my permission. Some of the villagers and I staged a protest and temporarily stopped the work. Later, when I sought information about the project through an RTI, the Public Information Officer (PIO) of the department concerned refused to answer. When I later met the DRO personally and questioned him on how they could acquire my land without my permission, he said that their department has the right to acquire the land once the information on land acquisition is published in the newspaper."
