Tension in Ayyappa Society over Sunnam Cheruvu land survey in Hyderabad
HYDERABAD: Mild tension prevailed in Ayyappa Society, Madhapur, on Monday after residents living around Sunnam Cheruvu staged a protest against HYDRAA officials alleging that their homes were at risk of demolition.
The residents claimed that authorities were conducting a survey with plans to evict them, falsely showing Sunnam Cheruvu's area as 32 acres instead of the actual 15 acres. They alleged discrepancies in land records and said they were being forced to vacate without proper justification.
Angered by the survey, locals held a rally, blocked the main road and displayed placards along with plastic bottles filled with petrol. This led to traffic snarls in the area. Protesters claimed that a court stay was already in place, but officials continued to harass them. Some even threatened self-immolation if their demands were ignored.
Police rushed to the scene, pacified the crowd and assured them their concerns would be conveyed to higher authorities.
'Baseless protests'
Responding to Monday's protest by plot owners, the HYDRAA clarified that the SIET layout falls entirely within the Full Tank Level (FTL) limits of Sunnam Cheruvu, located between Guttala Begumpet and Allapur villages on the Serilingampally–Kukatpally mandal border.
HYDRAA noted that even a previous draft layout approved by HMDA was cancelled for this very reason. Similarly, earlier building permits issued by GHMC were also revoked. Given these facts, the agency stated that the protests demanding justice over plot ownership were baseless.
Don't obstruct restoration works: Ranganath
According to HYDRAA, Sunnam Cheruvu spans 32.60 acres, a figure verified by the Survey of India in 1975. Following high court orders, a fresh joint survey was carried out by HYDRAA, Irrigation, Revenue and GHMC, which reaffirmed the original boundary.
Courts have repeatedly ruled that encroachments within lake FTLs must be cleared. HYDRAA confirmed no construction has yet taken place in the layout and advised eligible plot owners to apply for compensation through the government. It also urged residents not to obstruct ongoing lake restoration works.

We demand that they change the name back to Annapurna because it means Goddess of food, which is why KCR put this name... The police are very rude and are not allowing us to do the protest, while we came here for a peaceful demonstration...' We are demanding that the decision be taken back.' The Annapurna Canteen Scheme, launched by the previous Bharatiya Rashtra Samithi (BRS) government, provided hot, hygienic, and nutritious meals for just Rs 5 to the poor, daily wage workers, and labourers in urban regions of Telangana. Revanth Reddy's Indiramma Canteen is a fitting tribute. Every poor person who eats that Rs 5 meal should remember Indira Gandhi, as the name is suitable. BJP dubs Congress' renaming spree as ‘names change sarkar'
Hyderabad: The BJP in Telangana dubbed the 18-month-old Congress-led government as a 'Name's Change Sarkar' for failing to deliver on its promises. Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, Bandi Sanjay Kumar said 'Telangana Congress promised Change,' However, 'in 18 months, all it delivered was Name Changes.' On Friday, the Karimnagar MP, taking a dig at the State government for changing the name of the Rs 5 meal scheme named after 'Annapurna' to Indira Gandhi, said, 'Universities renamed. Hospitals renamed. Irrigation projects (were) renamed. Awards renamed. Flyovers renamed. Housing scheme renamed. Farm loan incentive renamed. Greening Drive (was) renamed. Departments renamed. Official residence renamed. Telangana Talli changed.' They 'Now, shamelessly, they've renamed the Rs 5 meal scheme from Goddess Annapurna, the divine giver of food, to Indira Gandhi. Revanth Reddy to stop changing the names of the schemes, reduce the hype surrounding them, and focus on fulfilling the promises made to the people before the elections. Telangana BJP Chief Spokesperson and Media In-charge N.V. Subhash condemned the decision to rename the popular 'Annapurna Canteens'—which serves subsidized meals to the poor—as 'Indira Canteens'. Calling it an 'unwarranted, insensitive, and politically motivated' move, the BJP termed the renaming as a direct affront to the sentiments of the Hindu majority, and yet another attempt to erase cultural symbols deeply rooted in India's civilizational identity. 'Annapurna is not just a name—it symbolizes Goddess Annapurna, the divine mother who nourishes the world.' He stated that the scheme had gained widespread goodwill due to its apolitical intentions. The GHMC is not a private trust, nor is it operated by the Congress Party. 'The use of public funds to glorify a single political dynasty reflects entitlement and autocracy,' Subhash remarked.

CM to throw open PJR flyover today; traffic woes set to ease
Hyderabad: Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy will inaugurate Shilpa layout stage-II flyover named after the senior Congress leader late P Janardhan Reddy (PJR), connecting Outer Ring Road (ORR) and Kondapur on Saturday. The flyover was built under the Strategic Road Development Programme (SRDP) at a cost of Rs 182.72 crore. It is 1.2 km long and 24 meters wide with six lanes. Its specialty is that it is a third-level structure built on two existing flyovers. Below is the Gachibowli Junction flyover, above it is the Shilpa layout phase one flyover and now the phase two flyover, is being built on top of it. The traffic woes of commuters will be solved. Once the flyover is opened to the public, the traffic issues for entering the ORR from Kondapur will be alleviated, benefiting those heading to the IT corridor as well. The congestion at the Gachibowli junction will significantly reduce, resulting in considerable time saving for motorists. Also, motorists can reach Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) in Shamshabad directly from Kondapur via Gachibowli without any traffic jams. On Friday, GHMC Commissioner RV Karnan, Serilingampally MLA Arekapudi Gandhi, and senior engineers conducted a detailed inspection of the flyover site and the adjoining public meeting venue. The commissioner stated that the construction of this flyover will effectively resolve traffic issues for those traveling to the Financial District, Madhapur, and Shamshabad. According to officials, the vehicular traffic would get relief at Gachibowli Junction by creating free movement of traffic from ORR towards Kondapur and vice-versa. It will also provide better connectivity between Hi-tech City and Financial district. As SRDP is laying a big foundation for infrastructure development in Hyderabad, the 23rd flyover will be made available through the project. Out of the total 42 works undertaken through SRDP, 37 works have been completed with this flyover, officials added. Moreover, the GHMC informed the railway officials to finalize the railway segment of the Falaknuma and Shastripuram ROBs projects within the next 2-3 months. Upon the completion of these two ROBs, 39 SRDP projects will also be finished. This will allow motorists to navigate the area without any traffic interruptions.
