Moment brazen thief caught stuffing golden OCTOPUS down her trousers in antiques store leaving owners baffled

WATCH the surprising moment a thief tries to steal a golden octopus from an antique shop - by stuffing it down her trousers.
The unique strategy was captured on CCTV footage at Battlesbridge Antiques Centre in Essex.

Perhaps the most shocking part is that the brazen thief managed to get away with it - at least for a few days.
Although the theft occurred on July 1, staff only noticed that the oddly-shaped candlestick holder had gone missing this week.
After looking back through CCTV footage, the owners discovered video of a man and a woman entering the store, before the woman takes the candles out of the holder and puts the antique down her trousers.
At the start of the footage, a man in an orange top can be seen browsing the shelves nearby.
He then taps on the octopus candlestick holder, pointing it out to the woman he is with.
The pair then continue to stand around idly looking at the shelves in the vicinity.
As the man walks over to the rotating display of jewellery, the woman appears to be getting a closer look at the eight-legged object.
They try to act casual by appearing to browse other items around the shop.
The woman then begins removing the candles from the display.
She then starts to stuff the octopus under her trousers - not an easy feat given how large the sculpture is.

The curve of its eight-legs seems to be giving her some trouble as she uses her top to hide the rest of it.
A glint of gold can still be seen poking out of her jumper which she then attempts to cover behind her bag.
Manager Claire Wade told Essex Live that they've only had shoplifters steal from the store a few times, and "it's mainly been young or middle-aged men, not grandparents."
She said that the husband had told the woman which item to take and kept a lookout while she completed the tricky manoeuvre.
Claire plans to report the incident to the police once they have reviewed all of the CCTV footage on site, as she has rented part of the centre for 15 years.
She added: "We were just in shock, it's a great big thing to put down your trousers isn't it?"
The item was only worth around £40 and can be bought online, as Claire said: "I don't know why she wanted it."
They are using the incident as a warning to customers that they won't tolerate shoplifting.
She said: "We want people to know that you can't just turn up at the centre and just help yourself. We're going to do a wall of shame."
Commenters on the video were just as shocked by the behaviour as the owner was.
One said: "Wow, very desperate and very sad."

Police find at least nine suspicious devices after shooting man with chainsaw

At least nine suspicious devices have now been found at the scene where a chainsaw-wielding man was shot by police during an arrest, Kent Police said. Plumber Sean O'Meara, 36, was wearing a gas-mask and body armour when he was shot and seriously injured by a police officer close to The Park Gate Inn in Hollingbourne, Kent, on Monday. Police believed the suspect was holding an improvised firearm or improvised explosive device (IED) and an explosive ordnance disposal team was called. Parts of the A20 were closed across several days as the bomb squad carried out further searches of the area, but the road has now fully re-opened. The suspect remains in hospital after suffering life-changing injuries, the force said in an update on Saturday. Police are not treating the incident as terrorist related. Officers went to an address in Ashford Road at about 7.15pm on Monday to arrest a man on suspicion of assault, the Independent Office for Police Conduct said. The man refused to leave the house and armed officers were deployed. The shooting happened at about 9pm. Chief Superintendent Neil Loudon said: 'This has been a complex investigation and we appreciate that the intermittent closure of the A20 caused disruption to many. 'We would like to thank the public for their patience and understanding whilst we conducted these vital searches.'

I've been ordered to tear down my £180k bungalow – I could go to jail if the council don't listen to me

A DAD has missed a deadline to tear down an unauthorised £180,000 bungalow in his ex-wife's back garden - despite the threat of jail. Defiant Mark Jones said he would live in a caravan and take it down "brick-by-brick" if he ultimately had to comply with Birmingham City Council's demand. 5 5 He is picketing the council house in a last-ditch plea to keep the property, despite having twice been denied planning permission and losing an appeal. The 55-year-old said: "This is £180,000 trashed in the bin. I can't win this unless the council speaks to me. 'My dogs will need rehoming and I could go to prison. I know we have made mistakes. "I want the council to talk to me and make me see reason.' Mark was given until the end of June to demolish the bungalow, built in the back garden of his ex-wife's home in Walmley Ash Road, Sutton Coldfield, in 2019. With that deadline now missed, the former IT worker is now protesting outside Birmingham's Council House in a desperate bid to secure a change of heart. He started building it for his dad Tony, who had cancer, believing the size was within the limit for permitted development, which can be done without planning permission. A month later he was told he needed planning consent but continued building anticipating he would get permission. But the application was rejected in October 2019, the month his dad died. Mark said he initially continued building despite his planning problems because his dad was gravelly ill and he was convinced he would eventually secure consent. I'm fuming after a massive five-storey apartment block is built just yards from my home - I can't sit in my own garden A second application in November 2019 was also rejected along with a later appeal, which said the bungalow was "backland" development" and "very obvious from surrounding private gardens". Mark's daughter and her boyfriend moved in during the covid pandemic and now he lives there himself. He claimed the council had been unwilling to speak with him and come up with a solution that did not involve demolishing the bungalow. He takes his dogs, springer spaniels Max and Paddy, to his regular protest in Victoria Square and said they would also be will be homeless if the council forced through the bungalow demolition. If the bungalow is not demolished he could be fined £200 a day. He said: 'The building size is fine. If I take all the rooms out and put say a swimming pool in it would be OK. 'I am now appealing the permitted development decision and waiting for the enforcement action letter. 'The council said it won't talk to me now. It's waiting for the court case. 'They will say take it down or we will fine you and then we will put you in prison. 'My ex-wife is starting to split the land off so it is separate. 'If I am going to lose I will knock it down. I will live in a caravan for three months and take it down brick by brick." Asked why he carried on building without planning permission, he said: 'What sane person wouldn't think they would get permission for this?" Mark claims the bungalow is "100 per cent within permitted development certificate limits" and pointed to the fact it doesn't have separate water or internet. He said previously: "We don't pay separate council tax. We can't have all three utilities until we have planning permission. 'Every single thing has been refused by Birmingham City Council. 'I don't want to knock it down. It's a waste of time and money. If I get the permitted development certificate, we are going to sell the house with an annex. 'The council should have put an enforcement on me to stop me building it. If I lose, I am moving to Spain and I will take the house down. 'Ultimately, I acknowledge I am at fault. However, I believe the council also bears significant responsibility due to the initial misguidance, followed by a severe lack of communication, support, and adherence to its own procedures.' A spokeswoman for Birmingham City Council earlier said 'Mr Jones is currently in breach of the Enforcement Notice that was served to him in 2021, and we have given him ample time to comply with the notice by the end of June 2025.' 5 5
