Madina to Wall Street: World's first Shariah-compliant ESG Index launches

During the 45th AlBaraka Islamic Economics Symposium in Madina, two organizations – the AlBaraka Forum for Islamic Economy and Spectreco LLC, a U.S.-based sustainability and technology firm – signed an agreement to launch what they call the world's first Shariah-compliant ESG Index, the firm announced in a press release on Tuesday.
The initiative, announced in the presence of Prince Faisal bin Salman Al Saud, Governor of Madina, and senior figures in Islamic finance, marks a significant step in the evolution of values-based investing.
Faraz Khan MBE, CEO of Spectreco and a long-time advocate for sustainable finance, described the collaboration as a 'powerful intersection of tradition, innovation, and global impact.'
'The world is becoming regulated through ESG laws and frameworks and Islamic economy works through shariah,' Khan told Business Recorder.
'In the space of sustainability the fundamentals of both world regulations are the same. So we become a bridge in the space of sustainability and ESG laws between two worlds and developed an index that aligns the investor, business and regulators from both worlds together,' he added.
The agreement merges Islamic finance principles with contemporary Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) standards – an intersection that stakeholders believe is long overdue.
'Islamic finance weaves together responsibility, sustainability, and transparency,' Sheikh Yousef Hassan Khalawi, Secretary-General of the AlBaraka Forum, was quoted as saying in the press release. 'Through this partnership, we are building a legacy that values both people and the planet.'
A platform rooted in faith and technology
Unlike conventional ESG indices, this new framework will incorporate Maqasid al-Shariah – the ethical objectives of Islamic law – into its screening and reporting processes. It also promises to use AI-driven analytics, developed by Spectreco, to provide real-time ESG data aligned with Islamic financial requirements.
The platform will screen investments based on sectoral exclusions, financial ratio thresholds, and environmental and social performance. It aims to serve institutional investors, regulators, and Shariah-compliant asset managers looking to integrate ESG considerations into their portfolios without compromising religious obligations.
Responding to a Global shift
The move comes at a time when ESG investing is gaining traction across both developed and emerging markets. According to industry estimates, ESG assets could surpass $50 trillion by the end of 2025 – but until now, there has been no index offering a faith-based ethical filter for Muslim investors at a global scale.
The Islamic ESG Index will initially target markets in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), Europe, and Southeast Asia – regions with sizable Muslim populations and growing ESG mandates.
By offering dynamic transparency, active monitoring, and automated Shariah screening, the platform is being positioned as a transformative tool for Islamic finance institutions navigating a rapidly changing investment landscape.
'It's not just about meeting global standards,' Khan was quoted as saying in the press release. 'It's about raising them – by showing that faith and sustainability are not mutually exclusive, but deeply compatible.'
'Collaboration through technology for Impact in the space of ESG & sustainability and creating sources of Climate finance drives us as an institution and as team,' he told Business Recorder.
A significant turning point
Observers say the setting of the launch – Madina, one of Islam's holiest cities – was as symbolic as it was strategic. While financial innovation is often associated with hubs like New York, London or Dubai, the message from Madina was clear: ethical finance grounded in spiritual values can originate from the very foundations of faith.
The initiative is still in its early stages, with further announcements expected on implementation timelines and partnerships. But for now, the message is resonating: as the world looks for financial systems that are resilient, transparent, and just, Islamic finance may have more to offer than ever before.

Iran-Israel ceasefire: Pakistan's balanced role earned world appreciation: Mian Zahid

KARACHI: The Chairman of National Business Group Pakistan, the President of the Pakistan Businessmen and Intellectuals Forum, the President of All Karachi Industrial Alliance, the Chairman of the FPCCI Advisory Board, Mian Zahid Hussain, said that Pakistan's constructive, neutral and balanced role in the Iran-Israel ceasefire has earned international appreciation. He said Pakistan acted with wisdom to safeguard the broader interests of the Muslim Ummah, regional stability, and the global economy. Mian Zahid Hussain stated that the ceasefire has led to a noticeable decline in global oil prices, providing relief to both consumers and businesses worldwide. If the conflict had escalated, crude oil prices could have exceeded 110 dollars per barrel, severely aggravating global inflation and pushing developing economies under immense economic pressure. He noted that the reduction in tensions would help revive shipping routes, lower insurance costs, enhance the environment for maritime trade, and mitigate disruptions in the global supply chain. Countries like Pakistan will benefit from smoother delivery of energy and essential commodities. Mian Zahid added that the recent war had exposed weaknesses in Israel's defense systems and cast doubt on its military claims. He emphasized that victory cannot be achieved solely through propaganda. Urging Iran to reassess its nuclear, defense, and foreign policies in light of current realities, he said the country should now strive to eliminate the economic sanctions that have hindered its development for four decades. By shifting its focus towards economic revival, similar to China's path, Iran can unlock sustained growth. He stressed that lasting peace in the Middle East requires sincere efforts. Iran should reconsider its ties with India in light of New Delhi's strategic alliance with Israel during the conflict. He also warned Iran to remain cautious of voices claiming that the US failed to destroy its nuclear program; as such narratives could invite further attacks. The business leader said that Iran's top priority now must be the removal of sanctions and economic rehabilitation. Meanwhile, Pakistan should expand its diplomatic footprint in the Middle East and continue to play an active role in protecting the shared interests of the Muslim world. He emphasized that the plight of Palestinians must not be ignored. Thousands of innocent Palestinians have been martyred, and millions have been displaced. The international community must stop Israel from continuing this bloodshed. The United Nations' failure to respond effectively has undermined its credibility. He reiterated that Palestinians deserve peace, protection, and justice just as much as any other nation. He concluded by stating that this war has proven once again that conflicts bring no real gains. Now is the time for all regional countries to abandon the arms race and focus on the welfare and progress of their people. Mian Zahid expressed hope that the current ceasefire will be transformed into lasting peace through responsible actions from all parties, ensuring that future generations are spared from the horrors of war. State Bank of India likely to tap debt market by Aug via tier II issue, sources say

MUMBAI: State Bank of India is likely to kick off a debt fundraising cycle for state-run lenders in this fiscal year over the next couple of months, with a Basel III-compliant tier II bond issue, three sources familiar with the matter told Reuters on Friday. India's largest lender is looking to raise about 50 billion rupees ($584.59 million) through those bonds, with a 10-year or 15-year maturity in July or August, the sources said. SBI did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment. The sources declined to be named as they are not authorised to speak to the media. 'The initial level talks have already started, but the duration would be finalised looking at the rates at the time of issuance and investors' interest,' one of the sources said. The source further added, SBI could also explore a 15-year structure with a call option at the end of 10 years, like its previous issue. In September, the bank had raised 75 billion rupees through 15-year tier II bonds, which had a call option at the end of 10 years. In the previous financial year, SBI had raised 150 billion rupees through tier II bonds. SBI has not tapped the bond market in the first half of 2025 and shelved a plan to issue infrastructure bonds in March due to elevated yields. No other state-run lender has tapped the debt market in the first quarter of this financial year that started on April 1. ICICI Bank is the only lender to tap the bond market. It raised 10 billion rupees through 15-year tier II bonds earlier this week, with a call option at the end of 10 years at a 7.45% coupon.
