Dhofar gears up for khareef with 100 tourist sites, 7,300 rooms
Dhofar Governorate is gearing up for its signature tourism season with a marked increase in hospitality capacity, as the number of licensed establishments reaches 100, offering 7,300 rooms, the Directorate General of Heritage and Tourism has confirmed.
The expansion — driven by new hotel openings in Salalah, Taqah and Mirbat — is part of wider preparations for Khareef 2025, a key period for tourism in Oman. 'This capacity growth reflects our strategic focus on readiness and service excellence,' said Abdullah bin Omar al Sabbah Baaboud, Assistant Director of the Promotion Department in Dhofar.
The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism, he noted, is working in tandem with stakeholders to upgrade tourism infrastructure and attract further investment into the hospitality sector. These efforts align with Oman Vision 2040, which positions tourism as a vital contributor to economic diversification and local development.
According to official data, Dhofar welcomed 1.048 million visitors during the Khareef 2024 season, a 9 per cent year-on-year increase. Omani visitors surged by 70.1 per cent to over 734,500, while Gulf visitors rose 16.9 per cent, reaching nearly 177,000. Visitors from other Arab nations also posted a modest increase of 3.6 per cent.
By end-2024, Dhofar had 83 licensed hotel properties offering 6,537 rooms. The additional supply — set to reach 100 hotels by summer 2025 — aims to meet rising demand and expand accommodation options for a diverse visitor base.
The 2024 season also featured a significantly extended calendar of events, running for 90 consecutive days. Activities ranged from cultural showcases and family entertainment to sporting attractions such as the Salalah International Cycling Tour, drawing broad audience engagement across the governorate.
The ministry implemented targeted marketing campaigns, participated in international travel exhibitions; and organised media and trade familiarisation trips. Social media outreach also intensified, partnering with regional influencers to reinforce Dhofar's profile as a leading monsoon destination.
Officials expect further growth in visitor arrivals over the coming seasons, supported by continuous infrastructure upgrades and broader investment in tourism services. With Khareef tourism now a centrepiece of Dhofar's economic strategy, the governorate is on track to solidify its standing as a premier destination in the Arabian Peninsula.

Pol and Albert were the first to test Salomon's revolutionary trail running shoe prototype in the real conditions of the Rimal Al Sharqiya during the Oman Desert Marathon 2024 edition. 'Pol's infectious enthusiasm and authentic storytelling reminded us exactly why we created ODM — to push boundaries, test limits and emerge stronger', said event organisers. Makuri, competing alongside journalist Albert Jorquera in January 2024, finished third as a team in the demanding self-supporting stage race. Their achievement demonstrates that ODM's 'no runner left behind' philosophy genuinely extends to athletes of all abilities. Asyad Shipping invests $64m in decarbonisation initiatives
MUSCAT, August 1 Asyad Shipping Company SAOG, Oman's majority state-owned maritime transportation company, says it has invested in excess of $64 million in a range of initiatives aimed at reducing the global carbon footprint associated with the operation of its 89-vessel strong, ocean-going fleet. An overview of these initiatives is detailed in the newly published 2024 Sustainability Report of the publicly traded company, which is part of Asyad Group — global integrated logistics enterprise of the Sultanate of Oman. 'Through our strategic initiatives in 2024, we have successfully reduced over 4,000 tonnes of emissions. Over $64 million has been invested in decarbonisation efforts since 2019, ensuring our full fleet complies with advanced environmental protection systems', said Asyad Group in a recent post. 'These milestones, highlighted in our 2024 Sustainability Report, reflect our unwavering commitment to investments and technologies that drives us towards Oman Vision 2040 and enhancing Oman's position as a global logistics hub'. According to Dr Ibrahim al Nadhairi, Chief Executive Officer, the company achieved significant emissions reductions across its fleet, while laying the ground for advancing its decarbonisation goals. This was accomplished through investments in advanced, energy-efficient technologies and the implementation of targeted operational measures, he said. 'These efforts highlight our commitment to meeting global climate goals, including the International Maritime Organization (IMO) strategy. Our continued investments in cutting-edge technology demonstrate a dual focus: upholding environmental responsibility and boosting operational efficiency. These advancements have further optimised our fleet's performance, leading to substantial emission reductions and reinforcing our position as a leader in sustainable maritime operations', Dr Al Nadhairi stated in the Sustainability Report. As part of its broader decarbonisation strategy, Asyad Shipping has introduced several impactful initiatives to curb emissions. Among the most notable is the installation of Rotor Sails on one of its vessels last year. These advanced systems leverage tall, rotating cylinders to harness the Magnus Effect, generating additional thrust and reducing the vessel's reliance on engine power. Depending on wind conditions, this technology can cut fuel consumption and emissions by 5 per cent to 30 per cent, offering efficiency improvements either through targeted retrofits or full-fleet adoption. In parallel, Asyad Shipping is collaborating with engine manufacturers Wartsila and MAN to upgrade the main engines on 22 vessels, with the programme slated for completion in 2025. These upgrades are aimed at optimising fuel usage, enhancing engine performance and significantly lowering the fleet's carbon footprint. The company is also advancing its use of Hans Jensen cylinder lubricators, a solution designed for large two-stroke marine engines. These lubricators reduce cylinder oil consumption and improve engine health, contributing further to operational efficiency. In the field of carbon mitigation, Asyad Shipping has partnered with the German University of Technology (GUtech) to explore Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) solutions. Together, they are assessing a range of techniques — including pre-combustion, oxy-fuel, post-combustion and direct air capture — as part of a broader effort to develop cutting-edge emission control technologies. Looking ahead, the company plans to roll out a vessel performance monitoring system that will support compliance with climate-related regulations such as CII and EU ETS, while improving fuel efficiency and reducing emissions in real-time. Additionally, Asyad Shipping is preparing to equip its new LNG dual-fuel vessels with shaft generators. These systems draw power directly from the main engine shaft, eliminating the need for separate generator fuel burn. This measure is expected to deliver fuel oil savings of 2–4 per cent, or approximately 2–4 tonnes per day.

Khareef business gets boost with over 600 work permits
SALALAH, AUGUST 1 The Ministry of Labour, through its Dhofar Directorate, has issued more than 600 temporary work permits since the start of the Khareef Dhofar Season 2025, as part of efforts to facilitate commercial activity and support entrepreneurs during the peak tourism period in the governorate. According to the Director General of the Ministry's Labour Directorate in Dhofar, the temporary permits — provided free of charge — allow the hiring of expatriate workers for non-Omani-exclusive jobs, particularly roles that citizens are typically reluctant to take. He explained that the initiative helps regulate seasonal employment, meeting the surge in demand from small businesses and entrepreneurs, especially in sectors such as food services, logistics and event management. The official added that the service has seen strong demand from owners of small and seasonal enterprises, offering a legal and flexible mechanism to bring in workforce support without breaching labour regulations. Permit holders are also expected to employ and supervise Omani staff, ensuring that nationals remain engaged in seasonal business operations. He stressed that the initiative reflects the Ministry's commitment to promoting entrepreneurship and reducing administrative burdens, by waiving fees and streamlining the application and approval process. It also ensures legal compliance and labour protection across all operational fronts. This effort comes as part of wider government measures to encourage local and seasonal investment in Dhofar Governorate, which welcomes tens of thousands of visitors during the annual monsoon season. The facilitation is expected to boost the quality and scale of tourism and retail services, while maintaining a well-regulated business environment.
