The most effective way to use fasting to lose weight
Fasting every other day could be the most effective diet to help shave off the pounds, according to a BMJ study.
The analysis found that restricting calories by fasting on alternate days was more effective than a continuous diet reducing intake every day.
The review of data from 99 separate studies involving more than 6,500 people found that on average, those fasting every other day lost 1.29kg more than those dieting each day.
Alternate day fasting involves a 24-hour fast on alternate days and has become more popular in recent years.
Other intermittent fasting approaches to dieting have also grown in popularity, including time restricted eating, where people only eat for a certain number of hours in the day, such at the 16:8 diet involving a 16-hour fasting period followed by an eight-hour eating; and whole day fasting, which includes the 5:2 diet involving five days of eating and two days of fasting periods.
Researchers from Scotland, the US, Canada and Germany wanted to compare fasting methods to continuous energy restriction diets by looking at all of the available evidence.
People involved in the studies had an average body mass index (BMI) of 31 and almost nine in 10 (89 per cent) had pre-existing health conditions.
The research team found that both intermittent fasting diets and calorie restricted diets led to weight loss.
But compared with continuous energy restriction, alternate day fasting was the only strategy to show benefit in body weight reduction, with people on this diet losing 1.29kg more.
The authors said that alternate day fasting showed a 'trivial' reduction in body weight compared with both time restricted eating and whole day fasting.
'Minor differences were noted between some intermittent fasting diets and continuous energy restriction, with some benefit for an alternate day fasting strategy with weight loss in shorter duration trials,' the authors wrote.
'All intermittent fasting strategies and continuous energy restriction diets showed a reduction in body weight when compared with an ad-libitum diet
'Of three intermittent fasting diets, alternate day fasting showed benefit in body weight reduction compared with continuous energy restriction,' they said.
Naveed Sattar, a professor of cardio-metabolic medicine at the University of Glasgow, and who was not involved in the study, said the findings were not surprising 'as there is nothing magical about intermittent fasting for weight loss beyond being another way for people to keep their total calorie intake lower than it would be otherwise'.
'It becomes another lifestyle option for weight management,' he said.
'Whether it is sustainable over the longer term is worth to examine, whereas for those who need to lose much more weight, other options are now clearly available.'
Almost one in three adults in the UK are obese while a further third are considered overweight.
Last week, Prof Sir Stephen Powis, the NHS's top doctor, said that weight-loss jabs such as Wegovy and Mounjaro could be as transformative as statins.
From later this month, GPs in England will be allowed to prescribe Mounjaro, also known as tirzepatide, for the first time.

ASL Strategic Value Fund targets Avadel board over Lumryz drug mismanagement, WSJ reports
June 29 (Reuters) - ASL Strategic Value Fund plans to push shareholders of drugmaker Avadel Pharmaceuticals (AVDL.O), opens new tab to vote to remove the company's board, citing mismanagement in the launch of its flagship sleep disorder drug, the Wall Street Journal reported on Sunday. The fund, which holds shares worth about $15 million in Avadel, plans to publish an open letter arguing that the mismanagement in the launch of the drug called Lumryz resulted in the company missing out on hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue, the report said, citing a copy of the letter. The investment firm also reiterated a call to the Ireland-based drugmaker to hire an investment bank and explore alternatives including a sale, the report added. Reuters could not independently establish the veracity of the report. Avadel and ASL did not immediately respond to Reuters' requests for comment. Last year, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Lumryz for children aged 7 years and older who presented with sudden muscle weakness, called cataplexy, or excessive daytime sleepiness, both symptoms of the sleep disorder called narcolepsy. Narcolepsy is a chronic neurological disorder that impacts the brain's ability to regulate sleep and wake cycles, with 70% of patients also experiencing cataplexy.

Urgent Ozempic warning every Aussie needs to hear as concerning trend emerges: 'Follow the instructions'
Aussies have been issued a warning about Ozempic as the number of patients being hospitalised for mistakenly overdosing on weight loss medications soars in one state. The NSW Poisons Information Centre received 332 distressed calls in 2024 from patients using semaglutide - a type 2 diabetes injection that trades under brand names such as Ozempic and Wegovy. Calls seeking advice on poisonings from semaglutide spiked by 1,176 per cent in four years, the Daily Telegraph reported Hospital management was required in 21 per cent of cases. In 2020, just 26 residents called the centre for help. NSW Poisons Information Centre senior specialist Genevieve Adamo said semaglutide was a GLP-1 agonist used to treat type 2 diabetes, but more recently had gained popularity among the public for off-label use for weight loss. 'To prevent accidental medication errors from GLP-1 agonists, NSW PIC advises the community to always write down or mark off the dose on a chart and always follow the instructions on the label,' she said. 'Ensure your doctor, diabetes educator, nurse or pharmacist has given you clear instructions on how to use your medicine, particularly on how to load a dose and inject correctly.' Common symptoms of semaglutide overdose include persistent nausea, vomiting, and diarrhoea, as well as intense headaches and hypoglycaemia (blood sugar). More serious side effects that require immediate medical attention include acute pancreatitis and gallstones. Last year, the PBS recorded more than 2.5 million prescriptions across Australia, a massive jump from 45,705 scripts in 2020 when the drug was first listed on the PBS. The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) has not approved Ozempic for weight loss, while Mounjaro and Wegovy can be prescribed for fat-loss purposes in 'very limited' cases. The TGA announced this month that Novo Nordisk, the pharmaceutical company that supplied Ozempic, had doubled the dose contained in the pre-filled pens from 1.5mL to 3mL. The new 3 mL pen landed on chemist shelves this month and injects a slightly larger volume per dose. The TGA urged doctors to warn Ozempic users to 'be careful' and check the dose before administering it. Earlier this month, official data revealed more than 100 deaths in the United Kingdom had now been linked to blockbuster weight loss jabs. Two of the victims were people in their 20s, according to a MailOnline analysis of logs kept by the medicines safety watchdog. The findings come as the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency confirmed at least ten people in the UK who used the injections have died from pancreatitis, a life-threatening inflammation of the pancreas. The country's Royal Osteoporosis Society has also linked weight loss drugs to osteoporosis and increased risk of bone fractures.
