5 BJP workers suspended for assaulting BMC officer

Hans India2 days ago
Bhubaneswar: A day after Odisha Administrative Services (OAS) officer and Additional Commissioner of Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) Ratnakar Sahoo was assaulted by some alleged supporters of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Jagannath Pradhan, the party State unit president Manmohan Samal on Tuesday suspended five BJP workers, including a corporator, from the primary membership of the party. The suspended party workers include Corporator Aparup Narayan Raut, Rashmi Ranjan Mohapatra, Debashis Pradhan, Sachikant Swain and Sanjeev Mishra.
Acting on the FIR lodged by the victim OAS officer Sahoo, the police had earlier arrested three BJP workers, Raut, Mohapatra and Debashis for their involvement in the assault.
Meanwhile, senior BJP leader Jagannath Pradhan on Tuesday claimed that the allegations made against him by Mayor Sulochana Das and other BJD leaders were nothing but political vendetta.
'I condemn the attack on the Additional Commissioner. Action has already been taken against the accused, and the Chief Minister has also held discussions with BMC officials and other stakeholders. We extend full sympathy to Ratnakar Sahoo. This incident should not have happened,' said Pradhan.
Pradhan further said that if anyone from his constituency takes his name while committing a crime, it does not imply his involvement. 'How could such an incident happen inside a secure office when the Mayor herself was present? It appears they allowed this to happen, filmed the incident, and circulated it in the media to politicise the matter,' alleged Pradhan, while questioning the security arrangements at the BMC office. Giving the background of the incident, Pradhan alleged that the public outrage against the senior officer of the BMC stemmed from an issue involving a Swachh Sathi — a sanitation volunteer supported by Mission Shakti — from his constituency.
'She was assigned the task of mobilising beneficiaries for a recent government event marking one year of the State government's formation, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi was scheduled to join.
She fulfilled her duty, but BJD-backed people and the Additional Commissioner targeted her for helping make the event successful,' claimed Pradhan.
Pradhan said he had raised the matter with the BMC Commissioner after learning that the volunteer was harassed by officials. 'The persons involved had only gone to the BMC office to discuss the issue. Unfortunately, an altercation broke out, which could have been avoided. But the Mayor unnecessarily escalated the matter,' he added.
On the other hand, the Swachh Sathi concerned, Rebati Rout, claimed that BMC Additional Commissioner Sahoo had allegedly threatened that she would lose her job for facilitating people to take part in the recent rally of Prime Minister Modi in Bhubaneswar.
Notably, at around 11.30 am on Monday, when the public grievance meeting was in progress in the presence of other officers, staff and general people at the BMC office, six to seven unknown individuals entered the premises unauthorisedly and assaulted Sahoo after enquiring whether he had a conversation with BJP leader Jagannath Pradhan over the phone.
The Odisha Administrative Service Association (OASA) came out in support of Sahoo announcing that it would go on mass leave from Tuesday.

PDA strategy, INDIA bloc strength will work in 2027 too: Akhilesh

Attacking the Uttar Pradesh government over its decision to merge primary and upper primary schools having less than 50 students, Samajwadi Party (SP) president Akhilesh Yadav on Thursday alleged that it was being done to devoid the poor of education. Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav. (HT file) Yadav also accused the BJP of strategically targeting the ideals of reservation, socialism and secularism, especially when elections are near. 'Whenever elections in Bihar come close, they start speaking against reservation, the Constitution and secularism. When they fear a backlash from their vote base, they attack these values indirectly by undermining social justice,' he alleged while addressing his party workers after inaugurating the new party office in Azamgarh. He proposed naming the newly inaugurated party office in Azamgarh as 'PDA Bhawan', declaring that only Pichhda, Dalit, Alpsankhyak (PDA) unity will open the path to social justice and political power. He appealed to the PDA voters to keep an eye on the voters list so that they could exercise their franchise in SP chief claimed that the PDA strategy and INDIA bloc's strength will also work in the 2027 UP assembly polls. Yadav further alleged that the BJP government was identifying such schools wherein booths it had lost and was now planning to close such schools. 'Thousands of such schools are being closed, while liquor shops are being opened indiscriminately,' the SP chief alleged. Referring to the early days of the BJP, Akhilesh reminded the audience of its foundational debates. 'At their first convention, the BJP deliberated on what ideological path to adopt. Some wanted to stick with their original ideology but many knew that India would never accept that path.' Yadav also extended his party's full support to the Rashtriya Janata Dal in the upcoming assembly assembly polls in Bihar.

WB CM writes to Amit Shah over spike in fake social media content, cybercrime

Kolkata: West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday wrote a letter to union home minister Amit Shah, raising her concern over the spike in provocative social media content and cybercrime. Mamata Banerjee had previously accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of spreading misinformation and fake videos, especially during the violence in Murshidabad (PTI) 'I write to convey my deep concern over an issue that is increasingly posing serious challenges to public tranquillity and the social fabric of our nation – the proliferation of provocative content on some sections of the social media platforms and the alarming rise in cybercrimes,' Banerjee wrote in the letter. Banerjee had previously accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of spreading misinformation and fake videos, especially during the violence in Murshidabad. 'Yesterday some news was spread that I have resigned. Police have registered an FIR. The jumla party only believes in divide-and-rule policy. Fake videos are being circulated every day. Earlier attempts were made to pass off videos of Gujarat riots as those from Murshidabad,' she had said on April 2. Police had suspended internet services in some parts of Murshidabad after violence broke out in West Bengal's Murshidabad district over the Waqf (Amendment) Act in April, to prevent the spread of misinformation. Videos of a mob attacking the block development office in Jalangi and ransacking the office of a railway gateman in Azimganj had surfaced on social media. Rioters were seen in video clips looting an outlet of a retail chain. Police had reportedly resorted to lathi-charge and tear gas after vehicles were torched, shops looted, and policemen attacked. 'Such content not only spreads misinformation but also has the potential to inflame communal sentiments, incite violence, disrupt societal harmony and indulge in crime against women,' Banerjee added. Banerjee also highlighted the surge in cybercrime and said it is 'growing both in complexity and in its detrimental impact.' Also Read: In Murshidabad riots, rerun of an old story 'From financial frauds and identity theft to online harassment and defamation, cybercrimes are exacting a severe toll on individuals and institutions alike. The current legal framework and its enforcement require further strengthening to keep pace with the rapidly evolving digital ecosystem and the sophisticated methods employed by malicious actors,' she added. Banerjee urged the home minister to launch large-scale awareness campaigns to promote responsible digital behaviour, alongside sensitisation programmes, digital literacy campaigns, and community engagement initiatives. 'This is a collective challenge requiring urgent and coordinated action to safeguard public order, national unity, and the integrity of our democracy,' the Trinamool Congress posted on X.

Poll panel urges voters to join roll revision amid oppn flak

Patna: Amid mounting opposition protests over the ongoing special intensive revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls in Bihar, the Election Commission on Thursday made a direct appeal to the electorate to take active part in the exercise to ensure no eligible voter is excluded. The appeal came shortly after Independent MP from Purnia, Pappu Yadav, sparked controversy by calling for a boycott of the drive. "I appeal to all citizens not to allow booth-level officers or any election officials into their villages since the SIR is nothing but a nautanki," Yadav wrote on social media. Urging people not to hand over any documents or details, he added, "Just serve them tea and water and see them off." His comments drew widespread backlash from netizens and sharp criticism from political parties. Reacting strongly, the BJP described the remarks as highly inflammatory and called on the EC to act. "This is a complete violation of EC guidelines. The EC must take cognisance of his remarks and act in the matter," BJP spokesperson Manoj Sharma said. Calling Yadav's words dangerous for democracy, he added, "It was because of elections conducted by the same EC that he was able to become an MP." In a press release issued later in the day, the EC stated, "The Election Commission urges all eligible citizens in Bihar to participate actively in this special drive to ensure that no voter is left out." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Why seniors are rushing to get this Internet box – here's why! According to the EC, enumeration forms are being printed and distributed to 7.90 crore electors in Bihar, based on records as of June 23, 2025. A total of 77,895 booth level officers have been deployed with another 20,603 being appointed. These BLOs are delivering pre-filled forms door-to-door to all electors listed as of June 24, 2025, the date of the SIR order. The forms are to be filled and submitted by July 25, 2025 with nearly four lakh volunteers, including govt staff, NCC cadets and NSS members, assisting the elderly, sick, disabled, poor and other vulnerable voters. The completed forms will then be collected by BLOs along with self-attested documents, and the data uploaded daily via ECINET. The draft electoral roll will be published on Aug 1, after which people can file claims and objections. The final roll will be released on Sept 30 and both hard and digital copies will be shared free of cost with recognised political parties and published on the ECI website.
