From housewife to CEO: She wanted to show her daughter that 'we can balance everything'

Time of India26-05-2025
In a city that celebrates luxury like no other, where the skyline sparkles with gold and ambition,
Anita Surani
could have easily slipped into the comfortable life of a
Dubai socialite
. A sprawling Palm Jumeirah mansion, a pink G-Wagon for her teenage daughter, 24-karat gold ceilings overhead — everything was set for a life of glittering ease. But Anita had other plans. She wasn't content being a passive participant in privilege. Instead, she turned her designer heels toward entrepreneurship and built a boutique design firm from scratch — all in the name of showing her daughter that ambition and balance can coexist.
A Life of Gold, Grit, and Guts
According to a report from the
Gulf News
, Anita's story is one of contrasts, of abundance and effort, of sparkle and sweat. Born into a modest middle-class family, she worked her way through college in the U.S., juggling part-time jobs at a convenience store and a jewellery counter. It was during this phase of hustle that she met
Moiz Khoja
, the man who would become her partner in both business and life.
Moiz, like Anita, came from humble beginnings. He once cleaned restaurant floors and later built a tech retail empire from a small cell phone kiosk in an American mall. Together, the duo created a flourishing business with over 100 retail stores — Moiz managing the tech frontier, while Anita slowly carved her niche in interior design by working on their real estate projects.

From Family Projects to a Full-Fledged Firm
Armed with a design degree and a growing sense of confidence, Anita co-founded
Zena Interiors
— a name that reflects her deepest motivation: her daughter. What began as a two-person setup has since grown into a thriving team of over 40, including architects, engineers, designers, and creatives. The firm's client list now includes luxury villas, restaurants, and stylish offices across Dubai.
But the road was anything but smooth. Dubai's design scene is fiercely competitive, and American credentials didn't always impress local clients. 'People wanted someone who understood the regional aesthetic,' Anita recalls. 'So we started with smaller jobs — offices, apartments — just to get the ball rolling.' Eventually, her team's meticulous craftsmanship and design sensibility began to attract bigger projects and a loyal clientele.
Zena: The Muse Behind the Mission
For all the hustle and glitz, the real heart of Anita's journey lies in motherhood. Her daughter Zena isn't just her pride — she's her purpose. 'I wanted to show my daughter that we can balance everything,' Anita says. 'That women can build something of their own and still be present at home. That's why I named the company after her — Zena.'
It's more than just a name. It's a philosophy. Anita wants her daughter — and other young women — to grow up seeing that ambition isn't at odds with femininity or family. That designer bags and business plans can go hand in hand. That high heels and higher goals aren't mutually exclusive.
The Dubai Bling with a Business Brain
Anita may embody the high-maintenance Dubai aesthetic — gold ceilings, curated opulence, and a wardrobe to rival a fashion week runway — but she's also a fierce businesswoman. When she launched her firm, her first instinct was to create a lavish office space, only to be firmly reminded by Moiz to get her priorities straight.
'He told me, 'First pay off that office. Then make sure the employees are paid — from your pocket, not ours,'' Anita laughs. It's this balance of style and substance, aesthetics and accountability, that has helped her business flourish.
Yes, she's a self-proclaimed shopaholic who adores The Dubai Mall and jokes about her credit card bills. But the thrill of spending her own money — earned through her creativity, grit, and business acumen — hits different. 'I enjoy money,' she says candidly. 'But I enjoy it more when it's mine.'

Aaron Rodgers' touching reunion with ‘family' member steals spotlight from celebrity golf event

Aaron Rodgers' touching reunion with 'family' member (Getty Images) As Aaron Rodgers inches closer to the twilight of his NFL career, the four-time MVP has shown that some bonds matter far more than stats or accolades. Amid a break before training camp, Rodgers made his way to the scenic setting of Lake Tahoe to participate in the annual American Century Championship, a celebrity golf tournament that's as much about connection as competition. Aaron Rodgers finds solace in unexpected bond with his 'Lake Tahoe Grandma' While Rodgers' estrangement from parts of his biological family has long been known, his affectionate reunion with a woman he fondly calls his 'Lake Tahoe grandma' turned heads for all the right reasons. The 41-year-old quarterback greeted Carol Sargent, his longtime friend, with a warm embrace and a genuine smile—offering a rare glimpse into the emotional side of the famously private athlete. Their story began nearly two decades ago when Sargent introduced herself to Rodgers at the same tournament. 'Favorite part of the year. Because we've made a really nice friendship, and we appreciate each other and nice to catch up,' Sargent told Daily Mail, highlighting the significance of their enduring bond. Despite not being related by blood, Sargent and Rodgers have shared a relationship that is deeply rooted in mutual respect and admiration. 'He's a wonderful person, so I feel very fortunate,' she continued. 'It's just been a wonderful friendship. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 기미, 레이저말고 이렇게 해보세요 에스테틱최원장 Undo He's thoughtful, he's caring. The quarterback, typically stoic and guarded in public, was visibly relaxed and cheerful—far removed from the often intense figure seen on game days. Wage hike: Contract sanitary workers feel deceived by Coimbatore corporation

Coimbatore: Contract sanitary workers on Saturday accused the city corporation of deceiving them by promising to hike their wages to around Rs681 per day from around Rs560, with effect from May 1, 2025. The temporary workers said it was following a protest in April that the city corporation agreed to pay them around Rs681 per day. "The civic body said the gross salary it could offer was Rs20,454 per month. Officials told us that the revised salary will come into effect from May 1. But in May, those of us who worked for the entire month without taking any leave were paid only around Rs16,000 after deductions. It looks like the civic body is deducting both the employee's and employer's contributions to the Employees' State Insurance (ESI) scheme and the provident fund (PF) from our salaries. If it does so, it's unfair," said one of the contract workers, who didn't want to be named. After receiving the salary for the month of May, more than 2,000 contract sanitary workers had taken out nearly a week-long protest in the first week of June, seeking the revised wage. Following a series of negotiations with the workers' unions, the corporation had agreed to pay them Rs681 per day for 30 working days, including four weekly off days. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Đây có thể là thời điểm tốt nhất để giao dịch vàng trong 5 năm qua IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo The workers' demand for payslips was also accepted, and the payslip for May was issued in July. Commenting on the salary mentioned in the payslip, Tamil Nadu Selvam, general secretary, Tamil Nadu Annal Ambedkar Scavengers General Employees Union, said the city corporation was deceiving the contract sanitary workers. "The payslip shows that both the employee's and employer's contributions to the insurance scheme and PF were deducted from the workers' salaries, which is against the law. Say, if the monthly salary is Rs20,400, one should be paid approximately Rs18,800 after the deductions for ESI and PF. Instead, they were paid just Rs16,000," he said. Santhanam Kumar, one of the contract workers, wondered whether the law allows for double deduction for the ESI and PF benefits. "If we are still getting only Rs16,000, what difference did the negotiations make? Drivers are paid better than the sanitary workers. We are the ones who clear the city's waste, regardless of our health, family and timing. Even if a worker goes on leave for two days, the accumulated waste is still cleared by the same worker. " While TOI made several attempts to reach corporation officials for a comment on the allegations raised by the contract sanitary workers, no one was available for a comment.

Urban expansion alters Vizag's natural landscape

Visakhapatnam: The erstwhile combined Visakhapatnam district has undergone a dramatic transformation in its land use and land cover (LULC) over the past two decades, with rapid urbanisation and industrial expansion reshaping its landscape between 2000 and 2023. A recent analysis by researchers from Vignan's Institute of Information Technology, Visakhapatnam, using supervised classification through ArcGIS, reveals significant shifts in key land categories. In 2000, Visakhapatnam exhibited a relatively balanced LULC distribution. Agricultural land dominated, covering 37.42% of the area, followed closely by forest vegetation at 35.10%. Barren lands occupied 16.5%, while built-up areas stood at 7.98%. Water bodies and industrial areas made up smaller proportions at 1.68% and 1.29% respectively. By 2023, the urban fabric had visibly intensified. The built-up area surged to 18.7%, marking an 11.92% increase tied directly to population growth and the expanding demand for housing, commercial zones, and transport infrastructure. This rise was fuelled by new residential and commercial developments across the district. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like איפה הכי כדאי להשקיע כסף? כלכלה מעשית מידע נוסף Undo Industrial areas also grew substantially, climbing from 1.29% in 2000 to 10.3% in 2023 — a change associated with new pharmaceutical ventures and overall industrialisation in the wake of Andhra Pradesh's bifurcation. This growth corresponds to a 7.54% expansion per lakh population, according to the study's estimates. At the same time, natural and agricultural areas saw notable reductions. Agricultural land dropped from 37.42% to 26.3%, reflecting steady encroachment driven by urban and industrial expansion. Forest vegetation, despite a brief resurgence in 2020 due to post-cyclone restoration, decreased overall from 35.10% to 26.7%, with Cyclone Hudhud in 2015 contributing significantly to this decline. Water bodies, essential for ecological balance, declined marginally from 1.68% to 1.4%. This reduction is linked to industrial growth, land reclamation, and runoff-related degradation. Meanwhile, barren lands showed minimal change, inching up from 16.5% to 16.6%. The study projects that population growth will continue to shape land dynamics through 2030, stressing the importance of geospatial monitoring tools like ArcGIS and methods like supervised classification to guide sustainable development. Visakhapatnam's trajectory mirrors broader patterns in coastal urbanisation across India, where infrastructure progress often intersects with challenges in conserving vital ecosystems. The study was conducted by Brahmaiah Borigarla, Rajesh Adigarla, and Jyotheesh Alla from the Department of Civil Engineering at Vignan's Institute of Information Technology. The research report is titled "Land Use Land Cover Change Detection of Urban Area Using RS and GIS – A Case Study of Visakhapatnam District", published as Chapter 13 in the Proceedings of the International Conference on Engineering Materials and Sustainable Societal Development.
