Plane passenger scores empty row with brazen seat hack: ‘Gotta admire the strategy'
A scheming mom took seat squatting to new heights after she scored an entire row for her family on a United Airlines flight, as detailed in a viral Reddit post.
In the post, titled 'Seat shenanigans — advanced tactics,' the Redditor described how they preboarded to see that the entire row in front of them was 'completely open.'
Just then, a family of four boarded the aircraft in Group 2 and occupied the entirety of row 9, after which the mother started behaving somewhat suspiciously.
'Mom says to kids, 'Don't unpack yet,'' relayed the Redditor. 'Mom is anxiously refreshing the seating chart in the app.'
The poster initially thought they were looking to see if they'd been upgraded to business class — something the poster had been waiting for as well.
'I check the app, see that row 9 is showing completely empty,' they wrote. 'So I think that they got the upgrade.'
That's when they realized the fam was 'not waiting to upgrade' at all but rather attempting to game the seating system.
'They were watching the seating chart like hawks, hoping the seats don't get booked, waiting for the door to close, because they wanted to take over an empty row!' the Redditor exclaimed.
It appeared that mom eventually won this game of mile-high musical chairs. 'Door is closed, and we're taxiing. The seats are theirs! Well played, mom!' they wrote.
The Redditor then added, 'Oh, and I didn't get the upgrade… But a full row of three isn't so bad.
Reddit users had mixed feelings about the seating hack with some praising the parent for her resourcefulness. 'You gotta admire their strategy. Not something I would do but wow!' gushed one.
'I don't see the issue here,' declared another. 'They waited until doors were closed to capture the seats. They knew they could be moved. I think it's fine.'
A third pondered if the mom was actually a seat squatter, writing, 'The seat map is notoriously inaccurate, so that alone wouldn't incline me to think shenanigans — but the mother's behavior with telling the kids to not unpack yet and constantly refreshing her phone display is rather sus[picious].'
The Redditor replied, 'Oh they were all smiles and high fives once we started taxiing. There was no doubt what they were up to.'
Meanwhile, some critics shamed the parent for essentially taking seats that she didn't pay for.
'I really think people should sit in the seats they paid for,' critiqued one commenter, while another wrote, 'Some FA's will enforce the walk of shame.'
A third recalled witnessing a fellow passenger's failed attempt at an unauthorized upgrade.
'I was on an intercontinental 10-hour flight,' they wrote. 'Exit rows were both empty. Huge leg space. 30 min into the flight, some guy decides to move and take one of the seats. Not 1 min later the FA comes 'Sir, you didn't pay for this seat. Go back now.'
The move comes amid an uptick in seat squatting in the friendly skies. California-based etiquette expert Rosalinda Randall said that should one of these fly-jackers occupy your air chair, it is best to address the situation calmly and in good faith.
'Pull out your boarding pass. Not only to double-check [if] you are correct but also as proof if the seat squatter protests,' she said. 'If the seat squatter refuses to move, do not engage; do not recruit other passengers to rally; immediately request assistance from the flight attendant.'

Trump-approved portrait hangs in Colorado Capitol after ‘purposefully distorted' version was replaced
A self-approved portrait of President Trump now hangs in the Colorado Capitol – replacing an earlier version he ripped as 'purposefully distorted' and 'truly the worst.' The new portrait, created by Arizona-based Christian worship artist Vanessa Horabuena, is displayed in the third-floor rotunda of the Denver building's wall of past presidents, occupying the same spot where Sarah Boardman's original painting had hung since 2019. The latest display, donated by the White House, mirrors Trump's intense official presidential photo, depicting him leaning slightly forward with a furrowed brow and a steely gaze. 4 Trump's new portrait, created by Arizona-based Christian worship artist Vanessa Horabuena. AP 'Thank you to the Highly Talented Artist, Vanessa Horabuena, and the incredible people of Colorado,' the commander in chief posted on Truth Social Tuesday. 'Now on display at the Colorado State Capitol!' The previous portrait, featuring a much younger version of Trump, was removed from the famed wall back in March after the president randomly took to social media to criticize it – despite its six-year run on display. The original painting was commissioned after former Colorado Senate President Kevin Grantham, a Republican, raised more than $10,000 through a GoFundMe account during Trump's first term. 4 Trump's original portrait was removed after he lambasted the painting in March. Denver Post via Getty Images 'Nobody likes a bad picture or painting of themselves, but the one in Colorado, in the State Capitol, put up by the Governor, along with all other Presidents, was purposefully distorted to a level that even I, perhaps, have never seen before,' Trump raged in March. 'The artist also did President Obama, and he looks wonderful, but the one of me is truly the worst. She must have lost her talent as she got older.' 4 Portraits of Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, Barack Obama, and Donald Trump displayed at the Colorado State Capitol. Denver Post via Getty Images The Colorado Building Advisory Committee, not the governor, oversees the portraits. Boardman, who received backlash following the president's scathing comments, previously told The Denver Post that it was important for her portraits of both Trump and Obama to appear 'apolitical.' 4 Wall of presidential portraits in the Colorado State Capitol featuring Trump's latest creation. AP Colorado Democrats, who are in charge of the legislature, eventually agreed to take the painting down at the request of local Republican leaders. Lois Court, a former state lawmaker who chairs the Capitol Building Advisory Committee, said she received the Trump-endorsed portrait over a month ago and decided on Thursday to hang it this week. 'There was a blank on the wall,' she said. 'It seemed inappropriate. We knew that the White House had sent us this replacement and it simply made sense to put it up.' With Post wires

Kristin Cavallari Doubles Down Dad's Estrangement With Wild Claims
Kristin Cavallari is not backing down when it comes to her fractured relationship with her father. In a new revelation, she claims her estranged dad, Dennis Cavallari, once "traumatized" her young son. Back in 2023, Cavallari publicly cut ties with Dennis, calling the decision the best thing she had ever done and labeling him a narcissist. The doting mother, Kristin Cavallari, shares three children, Camden, Jaxon, and Saylor, with ex-husband Jay Cutler. She recently shared that there is no limit to the lengths she would go for her kids, including taking on odd jobs. Kristin says the decision to cut her father out of her life came after a disturbing incident involving one of her children. "I haven't talked to my dad in probably three years," Cavallari revealed, calling the estrangement "one of the best decisions" she has ever made. She explained that their relationship had always been difficult, but the breaking point came when her father, Dennis Cavallari, allegedly "crossed a line" with one of her sons. "He traumatized my kids. And I have no room for that in my life, and so that was it," she said. Kristin added that her dad never took responsibility for what happened. "He had zero accountability, no apology," she said. During her appearance on the "Boyfriend Material" podcast with Harry Jowsey, she made it clear that the rift was not about addiction or any one-off mistake. Instead, she described her father as a "narcissist" who refuses to accept any blame. Kristin's discussion about cutting ties with her father struck a nerve and sparked a wave of support from fans who say they have been through the same experience. "Kristin, as a parent, is such a chef's kiss," one person wrote. Another admitted, "I didn't like her during The Hills, but the more I learn about her the more I like her." Many shared personal stories that echoed Kristin's. "I've cut my dad off for a year and a half, and he hasn't tried at all to reconnect with me. AT ALL. Major narcissist and zero accountability. i so needed to hear this," one user posted. Others called her brave, with one fan writing, "I respect Kristin so much for this. I lost my dad when I was young, but it takes a lot to cut a family member out. She clearly puts her children first, and I love that so much about her." Another added simply, "Facts kids come first." Some even shared darker humor to relate, like the commenter who stated, "Sort of related haha but my grandpa sent my dog a birthday card and has never once sent me one." Kristin has always made it clear that cutting off her father was not impulsive; it was a long time coming. In a 2023 episode of her "Let's Be Honest" podcast, the reality TV star first opened up about ending her relationship with her dad. At the time, she called it "the best thing I've ever done." The Blast highlighted that the 38-year-old said she did not recognize her dad's narcissistic behavior until adulthood. Still, despite a strained relationship, she held on until an incident involving her children made her say enough. "I was like, 'You know what? I'm f-cking done.' And he blamed me for it, like threw everything back in my face. You know, I can take the abuse. I have my whole life… But it's like when you now start messing with my kids. I'm not doing it," she explained. Kristin is not just drawing hard lines with family; she is also fiercely protective when it comes to her kids' emotional safety. The mother-of-three shared a chilling story about a break-in that happened while she was vacationing in the Bahamas back in 2020. But what stands out just as much as the incident itself is that her children still have no idea it ever happened. As reported by The Blast, Kristin revealed that she never told her kids about the break-in, fearing the trauma it might cause. "I will not tell them, probably, until they're adults. Because I just think some things kids do not need to know. And scary stuff like that, I will take that one," she said. The break-in happened during a family trip when the house's HVAC system broke, prompting workers to enter the home for repairs. That night, Kristin says she was sleeping with her son Camden when she woke up to a man crawling on the floor of her bedroom. Despite the panic, she did not scream or alert her kids. Instead of reacting loudly, she quietly informed her then-husband, Jay Cutler, about what had just happened. Kristin is not just defending her kids; she is also finally defending herself. In a candid conversation on Reality Rewatch, she opened up about the long-running drug rumors that followed her during her time on "The Hills," calling them "really unfair" and the result of producer manipulation. As The Blast reports, Kristin said one of the show's producers allegedly offered co-stars designer bags in exchange for going on camera to accuse her of drug use. In her words: "I've talked about it a million times, but it's one of the producers who bribed the girls with a Birkin bag to call me out on camera for doing drugs." The drama that followed, she said, went way beyond the screen. "It got really messy. All of our lawyers got involved. I threatened to quit the show at one point. It was just really bad," she recalled.
