Nigeria: NSIA showcases strategy behind subsidiary growth

Zawya21-04-2025
The Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA) has unveiled the strategic framework behind its successful portfolio expansion, highlighting governance, innovation, and capital mobilisation as the cornerstones of its subsidiary development.
Speaking at the NSIA's 2024 Earnings Presentation and media engagement in Abuja, Managing Director and CEO, Aminu Umar-Sadiq, said the institution's decade-long effort to build and nurture a diverse portfolio of subsidiaries has positioned it as a key driver of economic transformation in Nigeria.
'Our approach is rooted in strong governance, robust risk management, and a solid operational focus. These principles have allowed us to optimise performance while staying aligned with our long-term objectives,' Umar-Sadiq noted.
He outlined six strategic pillars underpinning NSIA's investments: Capital Formation, Strategic Impact Investment, SME Development, Direct Investments, Ecosystem Development, and Capital Mobilisation. Through initiatives such as the Nigeria Infrastructure Debt Fund (NIDF), Carbon Vista, and the Green Guarantee Company (GGC), the NSIA has catalysed capital and de-risked projects across sectors like housing, healthcare, finance, agriculture, and renewable energy.
On capital mobilisation, the NSIA boss revealed that several of its platforms have significantly outperformed initial expectations. 'We started with $25 million and now have over $300 million in attracted capital — not including tier-two capital,' he said. 'Currently, we have about $500 million in committed capital and over $1 billion in total capital attracted across our projects.'
Notable investments include the Nigeria Mortgage Refinance Company (NMRC), which is in talks with a major Development Finance Institution (DFI), and a pending oncology investment close to securing tier-one DFI support.
Umar-Sadiq also stressed the need to localise solar panel production amid Nigeria's expanding renewable energy market. Commenting on the federal government's restriction on solar imports, he said: 'With the proliferation of solar projects nationwide, there's a compelling need to domesticate solar panel manufacturing.'
To that end, NSIA has launched the Renewables Investment Platform for Limitless Energy (RIPLE) — a $500 million initiative focused on developing the full value chain of renewable energy. The platform covers solar panel and battery manufacturing, as well as diesel displacement initiatives and franchised energy models.
'Ripple is our current pride and joy,' he stated. 'It's our bold step toward achieving energy security and sustainability, with projects like the co-located solar initiative at Shiroro showcasing our commitment.'
With a diverse portfolio, clear vision, and strong partnerships, the NSIA continues to play a pivotal role in Nigeria's long-term economic resilience and inclusive growth.

Ripple applies for US banking license, joining crypto rush for legitimacy

Crypto firm Ripple Labs is applying for a banking license in the US, following a similar move by stablecoin issuer Circle Internet Group as crypto firms look to be regulated to deepen ties with traditional finance. Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse confirmed on X on Wednesday that the company is applying for a license with the US Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC), following an earlier report by The Wall Street Journal. 'True to our long-standing compliance roots, Ripple is applying for a national bank charter from the OCC,' he wrote. Garlinghouse said if the license is approved, it would be a 'new (and unique!) benchmark for trust in the stablecoin market' as the firm would be under federal and state oversight — with the New York Department of Financial Services already regulating its Ripple USD (RLUSD) stablecoin. Ripple follows Circle on wanting bank charter Ripple's decision to get a banking license came just two days after Circle, which issues the second-largest stablecoin USDC, applied to the OCC to create a national trust bank that would oversee its stablecoin reserves. The move by both firms comes as the US Senate passed a stablecoin regulating bill called the GENIUS Act, which lays out standards for offering the US dollar-pegged tokens, including that the OCC will oversee larger stablecoin issuers. Circle co-founder and CEO Jeremy Allaire said the company was taking 'proactive steps' to 'align with emerging US regulation for the issuance and operation of dollar-denominated payment stablecoins.' Anchorage Digital is the only crypto firm that holds a national bank charter. Ripple bids for Fed master account Ripple's Garlinghouse added that the company also applied for a Master Account with the Federal Reserve, which would give it access to the US central banking system. 'This access would allow us to hold $RLUSD reserves directly with the Fed and provide an additional layer of security to future proof trust in RLUSD,' Garlinghouse said. 'Congress is working towards clear rules and regulations, and banks (in a far cry from the years of Operation Chokepoint 2.0) are leaning in,' he added, mentioning the conspiracy that the Biden administration sought to cut off crypto from the financial system. Ripple applied for the account through Standard Custody, a crypto custody firm it acquired in February 2024. XRP gains over 3% on Ripple's bank charter application XRP, the token of the XRP Ledger blockchain that Ripple Labs uses for its products, has risen 3.2% over the past day to trade at $2.24, according to CoinGecko. The token began to climb late on Wednesday before hitting a 24-hour peak of $2.27 around the time of Garlinghouse's post before slightly cooling from its rally. Source:

US stock futures rise as chips gain on Micron results; GDP data ahead

U.S. stock index futures rose on Thursday, signaling indexes were nearing their record peaks, as robust earnings from memory-chip maker Micron fueled optimism around artificial intelligence while investors awaited economic data. The benchmark S&P 500 and tech-led Nasdaq were nearly 1% below their record peaks at Wednesday's close, supported by the de-escalation in Middle East hostilities. Chipmakers tracked a 2.7% premarket rise in Micron Technology shares after the company forecast quarterly revenue above estimates, citing growth in demand for its chips used in AI data centers. Nvidia advanced 1.2% after scaling a fresh all-time high on Wednesday. Following Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell's congressional testimony where he reiterated a wait-and-watch approach on interest rate cuts, reports suggested President Donald Trump could potentially announce a Fed Chair successor as early as September or October in a bid to undermine Powell. The move could affect the central bank's independence at a time when policymakers are striving to balance the risk of slowing growth and higher inflation, as Trump's wide-ranging tariffs and geopolitical turmoil threaten to drive up prices in the short-term. For the day, investors are focusing on the Commerce Department's final take on first-quarter GDP due at 10:00 a.m. ET, as well as durable goods data for May and initial jobless claims data at 08:30 a.m. ET. Traders are pricing in about 63 basis points of rate cuts by the end of 2025, with a 70% chance of a 25-bps rate cut in September, according to CME Group's FedWatch tool. At 05:21 a.m. ET, Dow E-minis were up 93 points, or 0.21% and S&P 500 E-minis were up 18.75 points, or 0.31%. Nasdaq 100 E-minis were up 99.25 points, or 0.44% Shares of sportswear company Nike edged up 0.8% ahead of its quarterly results due before the opening bell. Some of the central bank officials scheduled to speak later in the day include Fed Chicago President Austan Goolsbee, Fed Richmond President Thomas Barkin, Fed Cleveland President Beth Hammack, Fed Board Governor Michael Barr and Fed Minneapolis President Neel Kashkari. On Friday, the Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) report - the Fed's preferred gauge of inflation - will be scrutinized to ascertain tariff-induced price changes in the U.S. economy.
