Detailed Design Underway For Hulu Langat Flood Mitigation Plan
State Infrastructure and Agriculture Committee chairman Datuk Izham Hashim said once the design phase is complete, the project will proceed with land acquisition and utility relocation before physical construction begins, which is expected to start in 2027.
'The project covers several areas, including Kajang town, Kampung Sungai Serai, Kampung Sungai Lui, Kampung Dusun Tua, Taman Sri Nanding, Taman Sri Jelok, and Kampung Sungai Kantan.
'The work involves river deepening, constructing embankments and water gates, as well as installing pumps and building water retention ponds,' he said during the assembly sitting here today.
He was responding to an oral question from Datuk Johan Abd Aziz (BN-Dusun Tua) regarding the status of the Hulu Langat flood mitigation plan.
The project, part of the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP), entails the construction of Phase 2, Package 1 of the Sungai Langat Flood Mitigation Plan in Hulu Langat District, with a budget allocation of RM512 million.

Kota Kinabalu: Field work, including land surveying, utility mapping and land investigation, is currently being carried out for the construction of a road connecting Sabah and Kalimantan in Indonesia, said Deputy Chief Minister III cum Works Minister Datuk Shahelmey Yahya. He said the project involves a specific alignment, namely the construction of a new road spanning 28km from Kalabakan, Sabah, to the Malaysia-Indonesia border at Simanggaris, with an additional 20km spur road to Kampung Serudong Laut. 'The Federal Government, through the Works Ministry, has approved the Preliminary Study and Design under Rolling Plan 3 of the 12th Malaysia Plan (RP3, RMK-12),' he said in response to an oral question from Datuk Dr Yusof Yacob (GRS-Sindumin). In a supplementary question, Yusof noted that the border between Sabah and Kalimantan is long and highlighted the need for additional road connections, especially considering Indonesia's capital relocation to Nusantara, which is expected to boost regional population and trade flows. He proposed the construction of a road linking Sipitang to Long Pasia and into North Kalimantan through the Heart of Borneo, citing the area's rich natural resources and proximity to the Sipitang Oil and Gas Industrial Park (Sogip) port, which could be a strategic gateway for goods from Kalimantan. 'This route could offer a more economical option to transport resources from North Kalimantan to Sipitang, which is about 500km from Tarakan and 700km from Pontianak,' Yusof said, suggesting that the Government consider making the Heart of Borneo a new development corridor. In response, Shahelmey said the proposed Kalabakan-Simanggaris alignment was prioritised based on current connectivity needs, but acknowledged the strategic value of a route from Sipitang to Long Pasia and beyond. He said such proposals could potentially be incorporated into the broader Sabah-Sarawak Link Road (SSLR) plan, which is currently active in Sarawak but has yet to begin in Sabah. Consistent policies drive foreign investment, says Fahmi

Speaking at a gathering with the Malaysian diaspora on Sunday, Fahmi cited the Madani Economy framework, the 12th Malaysia Plan, the New Industrial Master Plan 2030 and the National Energy Transition Roadmap as examples of coherent policies. 'These policies provide clarity and assurance to investors. They trust that such policies won't be changed arbitrarily.' He referred to recent data from the Department of Statistics Malaysia and the Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry as proof that Malaysia continues to be a preferred destination for foreign direct investment. According to the Malaysian Investment Development Authority, approved investments for the first quarter of 2025 totalled RM89.8bil, a 3.7% year-on-year increase, despite global economic headwinds. The gathering, held at Rumah Malaysia here, was attended by around 50 Malaysians, including students, professionals and staff from the Permanent Mission of Malaysia to the United Nations. Also present was Malaysia's Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva, Datuk Nadzirah Osman. During the event, Fahmi also highlighted Malaysia's progress in the communications sector. 'Malaysia is among the top 10 countries in the world with the cheapest Internet, and we have the second fastest Internet speed in the Asia-Pacific region after South Korea,' he said, Bernama reported. 'This programme allows Malaysians in Geneva to share views with the minister and receive first-hand updates on current developments back home,' Nadzirah said. Syakira Ramli, Malaysian Association of Geneva president, said various topics were discussed during the event, including areas where Malaysia could improve by learning from Switzerland. For Malvyn Tan, the International Air Transport Association head of commercial fuel, the gathering provided an opportunity for the Malaysian diaspora to share feedback and express their views. 'I think Fahmi is very open and receptive, and this made us very comfortable to share our experiences while he shares the developments in Malaysia,' he said. Fahmi is leading the Malaysian delegation to the World Summit on the Information Society+20 High-Level Event, from July 7 to 11, as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen an inclusive national communications technology ecosystem aligned with Sustainable Development Goals.

Asean Summit draws global leaders
Many have confirmed attendance for the meeting in October, says Anwar RIO DE JANEIRO: The upcoming 47th Asean Summit to be held in Kuala Lumpur in October may be the most prominent ever held, with participation from a number of leaders besides the 'traditional' ones. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim ( pic ) said so far, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva have confirmed their attendance. 'Of course, traditional partners like Japan, South Korea, China, India, Australia and New Zealand will also be there, among others. 'I believe this will be a heavy responsibility (for Malaysia) but we can do it,' he told Malaysian journalists after concluding his working and official week-long visits to Rome, Paris and Rio de Janeiro, where Anwar attended the BRICS Summit and Business Leaders Summit. Anwar said all parties supported multilateral cooperation and rejected unilateralism. 'While they may express it diplomatically without naming any nation, the sentiment is clear. 'Secondly, there is a call for the Global South to rise, something I emphasised in my speech to BRICS business leaders,' he said. Echoes of this point had been heard in previous smaller meetings including the Afro-Asian Conference in Bandung 1955 and the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), but BRICS has a broader network, real economic strength and active programmes, like discussions on digital banking. Anwar said South Africa and Brazil were becoming more closely aligned with Malaysia and Asean. 'I believe this is a meaningful step, a 60-year-long attempt at solidarity that is now gaining real traction. 'In the past, Global South leaders had compelling visions but lacked economic or technological power,' he said, adding that these days, some members build aircraft and others lead in AI. 'Their capabilities are much higher now, but the spirit of the Global South has never been hostile. We still prioritise relationships with developed nations beyond the Global South,' he added. On the successes of his trip, Anwar said in addition to the oil and gas sector, Malaysia scored in the possibility of building large vessels for O&G transport, a point of national pride for local firms. He said a significant honour was accorded to them when he was invited by President Lula to deliver the keynote address at the BRICS Corporate Business Conference which was attended by thousands, including women entrepreneurs and traders. The Prime Minister also held bilateral meetings with leaders of India, Vietnam and South Africa, opening doors to increased trade and investment possibilities. Anwar also met Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly on peace negotiations for Gaza, and the World Trade Organisation director-general to urge for fairer reforms and more equitable trade guarantees. In his BRICS speech, Anwar stressed on AI and digitalisation as key themes and addressed the Gaza atrocities. The Prime Minister said that during negotiations, he pushed for conditions which benefitted the nation – for part of the production or a base to be in Malaysia. Anwar was on a series of visits to three countries since July 1, starting with Italy, followed by France and ending with Brazil. The visits to the major economic hubs of Rome, Paris and Rio de Janeiro were aimed at strengthening Malaysia's diplomatic ties and trade relations with the nations concerned. The three markets collectively recorded bilateral trade valued at RM50.91bil last year. Anwar was accompanied by a business delegation comprising representatives from major Malaysian corporations and innovative enterprises, including PETRONAS, Khazanah Nasional Bhd, Tenaga Nasional Bhd, Maybank, FGV, YTL Power and Sunway.
