Work on Sg Rasau WTP project to resume this month

Aerial view of Sungai Rasau Water Treatment Plant in Taman Mas, Puchong following the embankment collapse on Sept 7 last year. — Filepic CONSTRUCTION work on the intake component for the Sungai Rasau Water Treatment Plant (WTP) project at Taman Mas in Puchong, Selangor, is set to restart this month. The project was halted due to an embankment collapse on Sept 7, 2024, prompting a stop-work order to assess the situation and implement additional safety measures. This order has now been lifted, according to Selangor infrastructure and agriculture committee chairman Datuk Izham Hashim. He said the contractor was currently engaged in preliminary works, with mobilisation proceeding in phases. 'An independent consultant appointed by Air Selangor has completed the review on the repair works and the proposed new design for the collapsed embankment at the Sungai Rasau WTP intake, as submitted by the contractor,' he said at the Selangor State Assembly sitting at Bangunan Dewan Negeri Selangor in Shah Alam. The design improvements include the implementation of a cellular cofferdam or double wall, where the space between the walls will be filled with sand. Additionally, he said the project would utilise the latest design innovations, including a more robust 'flat web sheet pile', a technology imported from Japan. He added that works were expected to be completed by January next year. Izham said this in reply to Datuk Dr Ahmad Yunus Hairi (PN-Sijangkang) who asked when the project would resume. According to Air Selangor, the Sungai Rasau WTP is part of the RM3.4bil allocated for the first out of two stages of the Rasau Water Supply Scheme that was expected to become Malaysia's largest and most advanced water treatment facility. Stage 1 would have the capacity to produce 700 million litres of clean water daily by the end of next year. It will substantially reduce risk from river pollution, provide flood mitigation and support growing demand, including from industrial and technology sectors. It would encompass nine former tin mining ponds covering 489ha, serving as the country's first dual-function off-river storage system. When completed, it will be capable of supplying water and mitigating floods, including in flood-prone areas of Taman Sri Muda, Shah Alam. Stage 2 will begin development in 2027 and is expected to be fully completed by 2030.

Hulu Langat flood mitigation project enters detailed design phase

SHAH ALAM: The Selangor State Legislative Assembly received an update on the progress of the Hulu Langat Flood Mitigation Project Phase 2, which has now entered the detailed design phase. State Infrastructure and Agriculture Committee chairman Datuk Izham Hashim confirmed that the project will proceed to land acquisition and utility relocation once the design is finalised, with physical construction expected to commence in 2027. The project spans multiple areas, including Kajang town, Kampung Sungai Serai, Kampung Sungai Lui, Kampung Dusun Tua, Taman Sri Nanding, Taman Sri Jelok, and Kampung Sungai Kantan. Key components involve river deepening, embankment construction, water gate installation, pump systems, and water retention ponds. Datuk Izham provided these details in response to an oral question from Datuk Johan Abd Aziz (BN-Dusun Tua) regarding the status of the flood mitigation plan. The initiative falls under the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP) and includes Phase 2, Package 1 of the Sungai Langat Flood Mitigation Plan in Hulu Langat District, backed by a RM512 million budget allocation. - Bernama

Detailed Design Underway For Hulu Langat Flood Mitigation Plan

SHAH ALAM, July 7 (Bernama) -- The Selangor State Legislative Assembly was briefed today on the progress of the Hulu Langat Flood Mitigation Project Phase 2, now in the detailed design phase. State Infrastructure and Agriculture Committee chairman Datuk Izham Hashim said once the design phase is complete, the project will proceed with land acquisition and utility relocation before physical construction begins, which is expected to start in 2027. 'The project covers several areas, including Kajang town, Kampung Sungai Serai, Kampung Sungai Lui, Kampung Dusun Tua, Taman Sri Nanding, Taman Sri Jelok, and Kampung Sungai Kantan. 'The work involves river deepening, constructing embankments and water gates, as well as installing pumps and building water retention ponds,' he said during the assembly sitting here today. He was responding to an oral question from Datuk Johan Abd Aziz (BN-Dusun Tua) regarding the status of the Hulu Langat flood mitigation plan. The project, part of the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP), entails the construction of Phase 2, Package 1 of the Sungai Langat Flood Mitigation Plan in Hulu Langat District, with a budget allocation of RM512 million. -- BERNAMA

Southwest Monsoon: Selangor Dams' Capacity Sufficient For Up To Six Months

SHAH ALAM, June 27 (Bernama) -- Water levels in all seven dams in Selangor are above 95 per cent and are expected to last for another three to six months, said Selangor Infrastructure and Agriculture Committee chairman Datuk Izham Hashim. He said despite the ongoing hot and dry weather due to the Southwest Monsoon, dam water levels are expected to remain stable in the coming months. He said that the Southwest Monsoon, which began on May 10 and is expected to continue until September, typically brings low humidity and reduced rainfall in most areas. 'However, dam water levels can be replenished during the monsoon transition period in October, and the Northeast Monsoon from November to March, when high rainfall is expected in the catchment areas,' he said in a statement, today. Izham added that Lembaga Urus Air Selangor (LUAS) has identified additional ponds and former mining sites near major rivers, which are suitable for upgrading with water supply infrastructure to boost raw water storage capacity. 'These ponds are branded under the Selangor Off-River Storage Scheme (SORSS), which involves over 100 ponds and several former mining sites,' he said. Elaborating further, Izham said that the development of the SORSS will help optimise the use of alternative water sources, with its current supply capacity lasting up to three months. 'Overall, the readiness of the state's water resources, including dam capacity and SORSS development, is estimated to last up to nine months, to withstand the Southwest Monsoon,' he said. Izham added that LUAS is also maximising the use of groundwater as an alternative to treated water, particularly for the industrial sector, through licensing and water abstraction charges. Three groundwater wells have been built in Hulu Selangor for use, especially during the dry season.

Selangor dams at 95% capacity, sufficient for 6 months amid monsoon

SHAH ALAM: Water levels in all seven dams across Selangor currently exceed 95% capacity, ensuring supply stability for the next three to six months despite the ongoing Southwest Monsoon. Selangor Infrastructure and Agriculture Committee chairman Datuk Izham Hashim confirmed the state's preparedness to manage water resources during the dry season. The Southwest Monsoon, active since May 10 and expected to persist until September, brings reduced rainfall and low humidity. However, Izham noted that dam reserves are likely to replenish during the monsoon transition in October and the Northeast Monsoon from November to March. To enhance raw water storage, Lembaga Urus Air Selangor (LUAS) has identified over 100 ponds and former mining sites under the Selangor Off-River Storage Scheme (SORSS). These locations, situated near major rivers, will be upgraded to supplement water supply, extending backup capacity by an additional three months. Izham added that groundwater is being leveraged as an alternative for industrial use, with three wells operational in Hulu Selangor. The state's Zero Discharge Policy (ZDP) also ensures minimal pollution risks, with no recorded disruptions to water treatment plants due to industrial contamination.
