Aviva hands out £500 of free shares to staff after Direct Line takeover

The group said all 23,000 staff at Aviva and the 8,500-strong workforce at newly acquired Direct Line will receive the shares bonus in September to celebrate and recognise the milestone deal.
They will need to hold on to the free shares for three years, Aviva said.
Aviva officially completed the acquisition on Wednesday after receiving confirmation of the all-clear from the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) on Tuesday.
The takeover, which was first announced on December 23 last year, creates a significant force in the motor insurance sector, estimated to cover more than a fifth of the total UK market.
Direct Line owns the Churchill and Green Flag brands, as well as its namesake brand as part of a portfolio offering car, pet, home and other insurance policies.
Amanda Blanc, group chief executive at Aviva, said: 'The completion of the acquisition of Direct Line brings together some of the country's best-known and admired insurance brands and brilliant people to better serve the needs of now 20 million UK customers.'
She said the deal 'puts us in a very good position to deliver strong returns for shareholders' and supports its strategy.
'That is why this deal made such sense for us and we are excited at the further opportunities this creates for Aviva's growth,' she added.
But the takeover has also sparked fears among workers at the two firms after Aviva revealed at the end of last year that around 2,300 jobs would be at risk amid cost-cutting efforts in the wake of the deal.
Aviva is looking to save £125 million in annual costs within three years of the deal closing.
Aviva paid 129.7 pence in cash and 0.2867 of its own shares for each Direct Line share as part of the deal.
It also paid up to 5p in dividend payments per share to Direct Line shareholders.
Aviva shareholders own around 87.5% of the new company while Direct Line shareholders own about 12.5%.
Before the Aviva deal was agreed, Direct Line had fended off a takeover attempt by Belgian company Ageas earlier in 2024.

Shoppers say 'move over Baileys' after trying Tesco's award-winning Irish cream

Coole Swan, the award-winning Irish cream liqueur, is now available for £20 in selected Tesco stores with a Tesco Clubcard, down from £26.50. Some people say it's better than Baileys Fans of Irish cream know the simple pleasure of unwinding on a summer evening with a glass of something smooth, creamy and indulgent. The brand that immediately comes to mind is, of course, a cult classic Baileys but there's another bottle that our very own shopping editor highly recommends that rivals it in taste - and it's currently on offer at Tesco. Coole Swan, the acclaimed Irish cream liqueur, is now available for just £20 in selected Tesco stores with a Tesco Clubcard, down from its usual price of £26.50. Cheaper than Amazon's price of £25.95, it's a saving of £6.50 on a drink that some people are saying is 'like Baileys, but better. Made with single-malt Irish whiskey, Belgian white chocolate, and fresh dairy cream from the brand's family farm in Ireland, Coole Swan is a true testament to high-quality ingredients and careful blending. In fact, one customer said it's in a 'different league' to other drinks - quite the compliment. It's not just customers who are marvelling at this concoction - the drink has also won prestigious awards. This includes Double Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition and being named the #1 Irish cream liqueur by Tasting Table, reports the Manchester Evening News. Testing it alongside Baileys, a long-standing favourite, Narin explained: "Putting the two glasses next to each other, it's easy to see one of the key differences in ingredients reflected in the colour of the glorious nectars. Coole Swan's Belgian white chocolate origins give it a lighter colour than Baileys' rumoured milk chocolate blend. You'd imagine that Coole Swan, being white chocolate-based, would taste sweeter, but to my surprise - and possibly due to the strength of the malt -it tasted more mellow, smoother, and had less of an initial kick. "While I love Baileys, for me, the taste comes in stages - you have the initial sweet scent and then the first hit of warmth when you swallow, and then it's eased by the cream that extinguishes the fire. Coole Swan has all of the same elements, but somehow they blend in a way where you get them all simultaneously - there's no fiery undertone and no sweet hit; it's just all beautifully, perfectly balanced from the first sip." Narin added: "Both drinks have a similar alcohol volume - Baileys is 17% while Coole Swan is 16% ABV - but Coole Swan feels less boozy, making it drinkable to the point of moreish. But for me, there's one thing that makes Coole Swan a next-level Irish cream choice and worth the slightly more expensive price tag." There are a large number of equally as delicious alternatives on the market with similar price tags, such as Hotel Chocolat's Espresso Martini flavoured vodka liqueur priced at £23, often compared to a decadent liquid tiramisu, and Micil Connemara Irish Cream Liqueur which is slightly pricier at £27.67. However Coole Swan has over 1,200 glowing reviews and an impressive 4.7-star average on Amazon. Likewise, Tesco customers have lavished a stellar 4.7 out of five stars upon the liqueur. One happy Coole Swan customer shared their testimony and said: "This is so beautiful, creamy and a better class of liqueur. Move over, Baileys, there's a new drink in town." For one customer, it wasn't quite their cup of tea as they noted: "Nice drink but too sweet." That being said, fans of the drink have been singing its praises with another shopper raving: "The most delicious Irish cream liqueur I have ever tasted. Creamy, luxuriously smooth and very moreish. The taste of alcohol is not overwhelming either, which I find with Baileys and other Irish creams. Don't think I could go back to anything else after trying this; the only downside is the price." Truth as Arsenal star splits with agent to spark new twist in Rodrygo deal saga

Arsenal forward Leandro Trossard has this week split with his long-standing representative to sign with DH Sports and Entertainment Agency Leandro Trossard's split from his agent Josy Comhair is not directly linked to his uncertain Arsenal future. The Belgian winger has now signed with German-based DH Sports and Entertainment Agency, sparking speculation he's actively seeking a move away from the Emirates. However, Mirror Football understands Trossard mutually agreed to part company with long-standing representative Comhair, who is battling health problems. ‌ The separation was totally amicable even though Comhair had been leading negotiations with Arsenal over a potential contract extension. ‌ Trossard's current deal in north London runs until the summer of 2026 but it's understood Arsenal hold a one-year extension option the club can formally trigger. The 30-year-old wants to stay at Arsenal but so far, talks over fresh terms have stalled and failed to reach a positive conclusion to date. Discussions have been centred around a pay-rise and were not certain to include an extension of the length of Trossard's contract but no agreement has been reached thus far. It's understood suitable offers for Trossard may yet be considered this summer, should they land on the table because there has been no breakthrough between the parties. Arsenal are firm admirers of Real Madrid's Rodrygo and are aware the Brazilian could yet be available this summer for the right price as he has struggled for minutes at the Club World Cup under Xabi Alonso. But in order to facilitate that deal - plus the potential capture of Crystal Palace's Eberechi Eze and a top-class centre-forward - there might yet need to be a notable sale come the end of the window. ‌ Financially, Arsenal remain in good stead and are not currently at risk of breaching PSR regulations but they will need to ratify some departures for the sake of their future financial records if they're to continue spending notable cash. Sources have indicated there is still active Saudi Pro League interest in Trossard, who was the subject of a rejected verbal offer from Al-Ittihad last summer, and there have also been tentative enquiries from Europe, namely Italy and Turkey, in recent weeks. ‌ But at this stage, Arsenal are yet to receive any concrete proposals for the player and he still remains part of Mikel Arteta's plans for the forthcoming campaign. Trossard struck 10 goals and 10 assists in 56 appearances in all competitions last season and his availability and versatility is regarded as a huge asset at the Emirates. Comhair had represented Trossard since he broke into the senior setup at Genk but relations between the pair remain full of respect, according to sources.

Tasters said the ice cream on these wasn't creamy enough and the chocolate wasn't chocolatey enough. Jessica Carson, Which? food and health editor, said: "Cooling down with a delicious ice cream on a hot day is the stuff that summer holidays are made of, so having a box full in the freezer is bound to please - whether you are entertaining or you've got kids. "While the Classic Magnum wasn't beaten in our test, one supermarket brand matched it and a bargain alternative from Lidl wasn't far behind - and is less than half the price."
