Aljamain Sterling: Ilia Topuria's title run more impressive than Conor McGregor's
Aljamain Sterling rates Ilia Topuria's reign over two divisions higher than Conor McGregor's.
Topuria's rise in the UFC has been eerily similar to McGregor's, with both fighters claiming the UFC featherweight and lightweight titles. Topuria (17-0 MMA, 9-0 UFC) became lightweight champion when he knocked out Charles Oliveira in Saturday's UFC 317 main event.
Sterling thinks Topuria's title knockout wins over Alexander Volkanovski, Max Holloway, and Oliveira are better than McGregor's over Chad Mendes, Jose Aldo, and Eddie Alvarez.
"It's greater than Conor's run," Sterling said on his YouTube channel. "In terms of star power, Ilia has done the craziest and greatest thing that we've ever seen from a modern-day UFC fighter. You look at Conor – and this is no shade towards Conor – I would say his best run in terms of name value was Chad Mendes, but it was short notice. We've got to be honest about that. Then he fought Jose Aldo, right? I think it was right after, and then he fought Eddie Alvarez. A beautiful 13-second knockout (against Aldo) which set the world on fire – that's huge. And then he does that to Eddie Alvarez, which I thought was a tailor-made matchup stylistically for him. But still, he was the champ at the time and he did them the way he did them.
"But then you have Ilia. His last three people have been some of the greatest combat athletes of all time. It's insane what this guy has done. I don't think there's been a more impressive three-fight run than this, and the way he's doing it."
While McGregor (22-6 MMA, 10-4 UFC) is the first UFC fighter to hold two belts simultaneously, Topuria became the first undefeated fighter to capture two UFC titles. "The Notorious" praised Topuria for his achievements.

Ilia Topuria envisions submitting Paddy Pimblett with 'my balls on his forehead'
Ilia Topuria doesn't just want to defeat Paddy Pimblett. He wants to embarrass him in front of the whole world. After winning the vacant lightweight title with a first-round knockout of Charles Oliveira at UFC 317, Topuria (17-0 MMA, 9-0 UFC) anticipates the first challenger to his reign will be longtime rival Pimblett (23-3 MMA, 7-0 UFC), who entered the cage for a faceoff after his win. Although UFC CEO Dana White said he didn't approve of the faceoff and did not guaranteed Pimblett's place as the next contender, Topuria thinks it's a big fight for the sport and one that would generate mass global fan interest. "All the fans around the world, I think they want to see that fight," Topuria told TMZ. "But at the same time, I have to be honest, I think it's one of the easiest fights that I could have in the lightweight division because I can do with him whatever I want in reality. It's very exciting fight for the fans, but I'm going to go enjoy a lot the whole process. At the same time where I'm going to be able to shine once again." If Topuria is granted his wish for a title defense with Pimblett, he is confident that it would be another highlight for his reel. Topuria said in the aftermath of UFC 317 that he didn't take any joy out of beating Oliveira. He has a bitter history with Pimblett, however, and said he would not only want to end the fight spectacularly, but also do it in a manner that will make Pimblett ashamed. "I could choose the way I want to finish him," Topuria said. "He's not going to stay there for more than one round with me. But I don't know, maybe it's going to be cool to submit him on the ground with a triangle choke from the mount, something like that, and as I told him, put my balls on his forehead."

UFC Star Returning to the Wrestling Mats, Joining Hulk Hogan's Real American Freestyle Wrestling Promotion
UFC Star Returning to the Wrestling Mats, Joining Hulk Hogan's Real American Freestyle Wrestling Promotion originally appeared on Athlon Sports. UFC middleweight Bo Nickal is looking for more competition. Advertisement Earlier today, it was announced that Nickal has signed with Real American Freestyle, a new professional wrestling organization led by WWE Hall of Famer Hulk Hogan, Eric Bischoff, and Israel Martinez. "Bo Nickal is a tremendous athlete and one of the most accomplished wrestlers on the planet,' Hogan, the commissioner of Real American Freestyle, said in a statement released today. 'Nickal immediately elevates the RAF roster to new heights with his competitiveness and experience. When fans attend an RAF event, they know they're going to see the best of the best on the mat.' Nickal, who is 7-1 as a professional in mixed martial arts (MMA), was a three-time national champion at Penn State, and at the time of his signing with the UFC, he was a massive prospect. He fought twice in the amateurs before turning professional. Advertisement The 29-year-old earned a UFC roster spot through Dana White's Contender Series, winning by submission in consecutive fights in 2022. He made his UFC debut in March 2023 and won his first four fights inside the octagon before losing for the first time this past May to former ONE two-division champion Reinier De Ridder. During an appearance today on 'The Ariel Helwani Show,' Nickal explained why he's interested in being active within each promotion. 'At the end of the day, my contract with the UFC, I'm going to be fighting MMA with them, and then I think at the same time, there's room for me to compete in wrestling. You see a lot of guys doing jiu-jitsu matches or wherever it is. I just have the fire in me to compete as much as I can, and realistically, with fighting, I've been getting two fights a year. I think that's going to be the trend, which is fine with me,' Nickal said. 'But I'm 29 years old in my prime, and I'm just fired up to compete. The thing about a wrestling match is that it's so different from a fight in the preparation. I could step on the mat right now with no warmup and compete with the best guys in the world." Arman Tsarukyan: Ilia Topuria just picking 'easy fights,' Paddy Pimblett 'doesn't deserve' title shot
UFC's lightweight title scene suddenly looks a little different with the emergence of new champion Ilia Topuria, but Arman Tsarukyan believes he's still the next man up. At UFC 317 this past weekend, a new 155-pound king was crowned when former featherweight champion Topuria made quick work of former lightweight titleholder Charles Oliveira. Topuria's third consecutive knockout of an MMA legend wasn't necessarily a surprise, but it was impressive nonetheless to see him once again call his shot then implausibly pull it off. Advertisement One man who was watching closely at UFC 317 was the bout's official backup fighter, No. 1-ranked lightweight contender Tsarukyan. Despite his ranking atop the division, Tsarukyan was brushed aside in the aftermath of Topuria's victory, as fellow contender Paddy Pimblett instead charged into the Octagon for a faceoff with the new champion. Speaking on Wednesday's edition of "The Ariel Helwani Show," Tsarukyan reacted to Topuria's quick knockout and made it clear how he felt about Pimblett taking centerstage in the post-fight chaos. "I was surprised [Topuria knocked out Oliveira] in the first round. I thought it would be in the third round or at the end of the fight," Tsarukyan said. "[UFC CEO] Dana [White] said [Pimblett] is not next and he shouldn't be [in the octagon]. Advertisement "Paddy, he is a good fighter, but he doesn't deserve to fight for the title. He cannot jump ahead of me to fight for the title." While Tsarukyan was previously set to challenge for the lightweight title against former champion Islam Makhachev in January, and just served as the official backup for Topuria vs. Oliveira, he noted that UFC officials still haven't promised him that he'll compete in the division's next championship match. If Tsarukyan had it his way, he'd pair himself up against Topuria and give Pimblett a chance to try to continue rising up the ranks with a showdown against former interim champ Justin Gaethje. But if the promotion goes in the direction indicated after UFC 317's main event, Tsarukyan isn't going to turn down the alternative option. Advertisement "If UFC says to fight with Gaethje, I'll take the fight as soon as possible, then fight with Ilia. No problem," he said. "Both [Pimblett and Gaethje], easy money." Ultimately, the 28-year-old Tsarukyan still believes he'll get the shot next after stringing together an impressive four-fight win streak. In his most recent bout in April 2024, Tsarukyan picked up a split decision against the aforementioned Oliveira at UFC 300. Tsarukyan expects to face all these names at some point anyway — he predicted a win over Topuria would lead to a first title defense against Pimblett. Advertisement Yet while the notion of anyone defeating Topuria feels like a near-impossible task at present, Tsarukyan remains up for the challenge. He's targeting a return at UFC 321 in October in Abu Dhabi. "I'm not impressed," Tsarukyan said of Topuria. "Maybe if I was in his situation, I would pick easy fights too. If he's going to see me or Paddy, Paddy is easier to fight. [Topuria] is a legit fighter. He's the 145 [and] 155 champion. He knew he can knock out Oliveira. "Topuria, you know who is the No. 1 contender, and you know exactly who you're going to fight. It's me. Don't try to play with anybody. I'll see you soon."
