New mRNA vaccine is more effective, less costly to develop, shows study

A new type of mRNA vaccine is more scalable and adaptable to continuously evolving viruses such as SARS-CoV-2 and H5N1, according to a study by researchers at the University of Pittsburgh School of Public Health and the Pennsylvania State University.
The study was published today in npj Vaccines.
Though highly effective at inducing an immune response, current mRNA vaccines, such as those used to prevent COVID-19, present two significant challenges: the high amount of mRNA needed to produce them and the constantly evolving nature of the pathogen.
"The virus changes, moving the goal post, and updating the vaccine takes some time," said senior author Suresh Kuchipudi, Ph.D., chair of Infectious Diseases and Microbiology at Pitt Public Health.
To address these challenges, the researchers created a proof-of-concept COVID-19 vaccine using what's known as a "trans-amplifying" mRNA platform.
In this approach, the mRNA is separated into two fragments -- the antigen sequence and the replicase sequence -- the latter of which can be produced in advance, saving crucial time in the event a new vaccine must be developed urgently and produced at scale.
Additionally, the researchers analysed the spike-protein sequences of all known variants of SARS-CoV-2 for commonalities, rendering what's known as a "consensus spike protein" as the basis for the vaccine's antigen.
In mice, the vaccine induced a robust immune response against many strains of SARS-CoV-2.
"This has the potential for more lasting immunity that would not require updating, because the vaccine has the potential to provide broad protection," said Kuchipudi.
"Additionally, this format requires an mRNA dose 40 times less than conventional vaccines, so this new approach significantly reduces the overall cost of the vaccine."
The lessons learned from this study could inform more efficient vaccine development for other constantly evolving RNA viruses with pandemic potential, Kuchipudi said.
"We hope to apply the principles of this lower-cost, broad-protection antigen design to pressing challenges like bird flu," added Kuchipudi.

The screenings conducted at 514 govt and corporation schools in the district in the past two years under the state govt's Kannoli Kappom Thittam scheme also found an increase in the students with refractive errors. While only 8,070 of the 1,07,260 students screened were identified with refractive errors in 2023-24, 11,053 of the 1,51,132 students screened were diagnosed with the condition in 2024-25. All the children with refractive errors were provided with spectacles. District health officials, however, attributed the increase in refractive cases to the higher number of students screened. Dr M Prabhu Shankar, senior ophthalmology consultant at Shankara Eye Hospital, said, "There is a global increase in refractive errors among children, especially in Asian countries, post-Covid, due to increased indoor activities and exposure to mobile phones." He said the only way to reduce this defect was to engage the children in outdoor activities and focus on distant objects.

Aizawl: Mizoram has one active Covid-19 case which was detected after 25 samples were tested on Wednesday while 13 Covid cases have been identified so far during this year, integrated disease surveillance programme (IDSP) officials said on Thursday. The officials said the last detection was made at the Zoram Medical College & Hospital (ZMC&H) in Falkawn near Aizawl and is being treated there. Of the seven samples tested on Thursday, no sample was found to be infected with the coronavirus. All those identified as infected with Covid-19 are from Aizawl district. No one has died due to the infection this year and none of them have serious symptoms. Covid-19 infections have been identified in the state for the first time this year during mid-May when two persons were identified as infected. The officials said during last year, 73 people were found to be infected with Covid-19 while no positive cases were found after Oct last year till mid-May this year. During the Covid-19 pandemic years (March 2020-Oct 2024), 734 people died in Mizoram with the largest number of 538 people during 2021. Eight people each died during 2020 and 2023 while 180 people died during 2022. Since early 2020, at least 19,97,819 samples have been tested till Thursday of which 2,39,648 have been found to be infected with the coronavirus with 2,38,913 people discharged and 734 fatalities in the state.

CM Lalduhoma inaugurates trauma care facility at Civil Hospital in Aizawl

1 2 Aizawl: CM Lalduhoma inaugurated the newly completed trauma care facility at the Civil Hospital in Aizawl on Thursday, a milestone in bolstering emergency healthcare services in the state. The CM expressed deep appreciation to all contributors, emphasising the facility's vital role in providing timely trauma response and critical care. During his address, the chief minister also announced ongoing expansion efforts at the hospital, including the construction of new Block A and Block B under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Vikas Karyakram (PMJVK) scheme, with an estimated cost of Rs 88.33 crore. The upgraded services will soon include cardiac care, kidney dialysis and IVF to meet increasing healthcare needs. He lauded Mizoram's highly skilled doctors and reiterated the govt's commitment to equipping them with essential infrastructure — especially for the benefit of economically weaker sections. He assured that the trauma care facility will evolve based on practical needs and expert feedback. Health minister Lalrinpuii echoed the commitment to healthcare advancement and expressed gratitude to the CM for his unwavering support. The facility, which had faced delays due to land disputes and the Covid-19 pandemic, has now been completed with Rs 121.50 lakh received from central funds and Rs 450 lakh from the state govt. It houses a reception and triage area, treatment and observation rooms, imaging services, a minor OT/resuscitation room, and staff rooms. It is one of seven trauma care facilities established across Mizoram.
