Tim Davie turns on BBC staff over Bob Vylan failings
Tim Davie told Parliament's culture, media and sport committee on Monday that ending the broadcast was an 'option open to those on the ground on the day,' but that they had not taken action.
During a performance at the festival, the punk rap duo encouraged the crowd to join in chants of 'death, death to the IDF', in reference to the Israeli military killing thousands of Palestinians in Gaza.
The performance was carried live and remained available on BBC iPlayer for several hours, leading to severe criticism of the corporation from ministers, MPs and anti-Semitism campaigners.
In a letter to MPs, Mr Davie appeared to blame those working at Glastonbury, which he also attended, for the mistake.
'There were individuals present at Glastonbury who had the authority to cut the livestream after appropriate consideration,' he wrote.
'Those individuals had access to advice and support offsite should they have considered it necessary.'
But the director general refused to answer a question from Dame Caroline Dineage, the committee's chairman, over whether cutting the live feed was discussed during the performance.
He wrote: 'You will appreciate that the answer to this question is currently being considered through the appropriate internal processes.
'What we can say is that cutting the livestream was an option open to those on the ground on the day.'
He added that the corporation was taking immediate action on the 'failings', including 'ensuring proper accountability for those found to be responsible for those failings in the live broadcast'.
The BBC has since changed its rules so that high-risk artists are not broadcast live.
Mr Davie said in his letter that Bob Vylan were assessed as a 'Category A' risk for broadcast, while Kneecap, another band performing at the festival, were considered even more risky.
Kneecap was not streamed live, but the corporation decided that Bob Vylan could broadcast.
Mr Davie said that 'other mitigations were considered and were put in place' for Bob Vylan's performance, but conceded that 'there were failures in our coverage which led to offensive content being broadcast live'.
He added: 'I deeply regret that such deplorable behaviour appeared on the BBC and want to apologise to our viewers and listeners and in particular the Jewish community.'
The incident led to an intervention on Sunday from Dame Melanie Dawes, the chief executive of Ofcom, who said that public trust in the BBC had been weakened by the broadcast.
She called on executives to 'get a grip quicker' on similar situations in future.
'A problem of leadership'
Lisa Nandy, the Culture Secretary, said that the fiasco had exposed 'a problem of leadership' at the BBC, and sources close to her suggested she expected to see members of staff fired for the mistake.
Mr Davie's letter came on a day of turmoil for the BBC, as it published two other investigations into the Gregg Wallace debacle and the decision to air a documentary about the conflict in Gaza that featured the son of a Hamas official. The boy was interviewed without reference to his father's role.
Campaigners have called for Mr Davie's resignation over the documentary, which the BBC has since acknowledged did not meet its editorial guidelines.
Gideon Falter, chief executive of Campaign Against Antisemitism, said: 'If the BBC were an accountable organisation, senior executives would be scrambling to save their jobs.
'Instead, it's the usual weasel pledge to 'update some guidelines'. This is appalling.
'Under director general Tim Davie, the BBC has gone from national treasure to national embarrassment. He needs to go.'
Danny Cohen, former director of BBC Television, added: 'This looks like a classic case of 'deputy heads must roll' and that is nowhere near good enough.'

Beauty queen's £6m Omaze dream home could be partially demolished
Omaze is fighting to avoid having to demolish parts of a £6million home won for just £10 in a prize draw by submitting a retrospective planning application for areas that were built without approval. The dream home was offered in a link-up with the BBC to raise funds for Comic Relief , with backing from stars including Davina McCall , Lenny Henry and Rylan Clark . But discrepancies between the approved development and what had been built emerged before the sweepstake closed and plans to announce the winner live on the night were shelved. The winner, former Miss Wales finalist Vicky Curtis-Cresswell, is yet to receive the keys while the legal wrangle rumbles on. Omaze has now submitted the application, revealing the extent of the problems at stunning Larkside in Blakeney on the trendy north Norfolk coast – billed as its biggest ever prize draw. The three-bedroom mansion is designed in the style of the exclusive homes found in The Hamptons area of Long Island. The company has asked North Norfolk District Council if it can keep a single-storey extension to the eastern wing, a four-bay garage, summerhouse, tennis court with 'associated enclosure and landscaping' and outdoor swimming pool. All of these could end up being razed to the ground if the local authority's planning officials and councillors refuse permission. A council spokesman confirmed the retrospective application from Omaze was received on Tuesday. He added: 'The application is currently in the process of being validated. Once validated, all the relevant documents will be available to view on the public portal. 'If valid upon receipt, it is expected to appear on the portal as early as next week but will be longer if there are further requirements.' Local residents and other relevant local authorities will be able to comment formally once the plans are made available publicly. They will then be voted on by the council's planning committee at a later date. The council launched a probe in February – a month before Red Nose Day - after an eagle-eyed member of the public spotted potential issues with the property, which was built in 2020. If retrospective planning permission was not granted for the areas under scrutiny, Omaze could appeal to the Planning Inspectorate. Ms Curtis-Cresswell, 38, has revealed she plans to sell the mansion – although the planning breaches have delayed her plans and threaten to affect its value. When she won, she was looking for a rental home while living with her husband Dale, 41, and young daughter at her in-laws' three-bedroom house in Wales. Speaking at the time, the 2008 Miss Wales entrant said: 'It's crazy. One week, we're worrying about our old car breaking down, the next thing we've got a £6 million house.' A £250,000 cash prize came with the 5,000 sq ft house, which has access to a secluded pontoon and has £165,000 worth of furnishings. Letting agents estimates it could be rented out for £5,500 per month. North Norfolk District Council concluded earlier this year that the property had 'not been completed in accordance with the approved plans' after an investigation which including a visit from officers. Jamie Minors, managing director of local estate agents Minors and Brady, said then: 'This will massively affect the chance of sale, as some people will be put off and will not want to buy it. It could also affect the value. 'Selling it will definitely be more difficult and challenging, as solicitors will definitely advise against it.' However, he added the high-end property market also attracted wealthy people who would 'try and find a way to resolve any problem'.

How Thomas Markle caused 'chaos' for everyone during the run up to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's wedding as the Duchess of Sussex's father celebrates his 81st birthday
During the run up to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle 's wedding in May 2018 there were two guests who sparked an intense interest from both the public and the press - the bride's mother and father. But while Doria Ragland kept her head down before the big day, Thomas Markle - who is 81 today - appeared to be actively seeking out the limelight to capitalise on his daughter's marriage into the most famous family in the world. In fact, Thomas' actions caused his son-in-law Prince Harry to declare that the father of the bride caused 'chaos' in the days before the wedding. Writing in his tell-all biography Spare, Harry lifted the curtain on the drama revolving around Thomas that engulfed the Royal Family just days before the ceremony. The prince said that Meghan had spent months trying to 'soothe' her father who had been left upset by his media coverage. 'His pride was constantly wounded,' Harry wrote. 'Every day there was another humiliating photo in the paper.' Considering Thomas' previous unease with his coverage in the papers, Harry and Meghan were surprised when they got word that he had in fact staged a candid photoshoot working with the paparazzi. Asked point blank if the story was true Thomas said no. Harry said: 'He swore he'd never staged any photos, that he hadn't taken part in any such charade, that he didn't know the pap in question. 'Meg whispered to me: "I believe him".' But then the next morning the story broke and it was proved that Thomas had indeed lied. 'A week before the wedding, this now became the story... Soon after the story broke, Thomas Markle sent us a text: "I'm so ashamed",' Harry wrote. The story then took another dramatic turn when Thomas then had a heart attack which finally ended any prospect of him attending the wedding. Despite his absence, Thomas still continued to cause 'chaos' for the bride and groom. According to Harry, Meghan was somewhat distracted by her father when drama erupted over Princess Charlotte's bridesmaid dress. The Duke of Sussex claimed that Meghan had missed Kate Middleton's text about issues with Charlotte's dress because she was 'dealing with the chaos surrounding her father'. It has been widely reported that the tense stand-off between Kate and Meghan took place after Charlotte's fitting for her bridesmaid dress. According to royal insider Tom Bower, Kate allegedly believed that the bridesmaids should wear tights as per royal protocol. However, at Meghan's 'insistence' the tradition was dropped. Their biggest disagreement was over the length of Charlotte's hem, which Kate believed was too short for the three-year-old princess. Meghan's assistant Melissa Toubati and dress-fitter Clare Waight Keller claimed to have 'witnessed Meghan emphatically reject Kate's observation,' Bower said. The altercation caused Kate to burst into tears according to presenter and friend of Queen Camilla, Kirstie Allsopp. Reports differ about what happened next. Bower wrote that Kate went over to Meghan's quarters in Kensington Palace with a bunch of flowers and asked her not to speak rudely to her staff. 'In Kate's version, Meghan slammed the door in her face and threw the flowers in a dustbin,' Bower wrote. After the wedding it was the now-Princess of Wales' report of the altercation that made headlines about Meghan's 'diva' behaviour. Meghan would recall her version of events during her bombshell interview with US talk show host Oprah Winfrey in 2021. There, she claimed that the tears were in fact hers, and the flowers an apology. 'A few days before the wedding, she was upset about something pertaining - yes, the issue was correct - about flower-girl dresses, and it made me cry, and it really hurt my feelings,' Meghan said during the interview. 'What was hard to get over was being blamed for something that not only I didn't do but that happened to me.' 'And the people who were part of our wedding going to our comms team and saying, "I know this didn't happen." I don't have to tell them what actually happened,' she added. Since the wedding, Meghan and Harry have not communicated with Thomas, and he has never had the opportunity to meet his son-in-law - or grandchildren Prince Archie, six, and Princess Lilibet, four. 'I've had a good life and I am proud of what I've accomplished, but everything has been overshadowed by what has happened in the last six years,' he told Mail Online last year. 'I've never been one for birthdays, but I know the one person I most want to hear from, Meghan, won't be in touch.' Thomas has put further strain on their relationship by repeatedly giving interviews to the press since Meghan married into the Royal Family. In July 2018, during an interview with The Mail on Sunday, Thomas claimed his daughter would be 'nothing without me. I made her the Duchess she is today'. He has also appeared on talk shows such as Good Morning Britain, where he has spoken at length about his relationship with Harry and Meghan. The Duchess's father had been living in Mexico before he upped and moved across the world to the Philippines earlier this year. Thomas along with his son - Thomas Jr - are now living on the tropical island of Cebu. Speaking about his move to South East Asia, Thomas told the Daily Mail: 'I am ready for a change. 'I have felt stuck in a rut for some time and I am ready to meet new people and experience kindness.' He said: 'At 80 it is time to go somewhere where the people are lovely and I can enjoy a quieter, friendlier existence. 'In South East Asia the medical care is good, you can live reasonably cheaply, the people are kind and respect older people and the food is healthy. 'Mostly I just want peace. At 80, none of us know how long we have left. 'I want whatever time I have to be peaceful with none of the awful drama of recent years.' Since the move, the Markles have not found Cebu to be the tranquil paradise they were expecting, with the men reportedly struggling to adapt to the extremely hot and humid weather on the island. The Daily Express reported that concerns had been raised about how the climate could affect Thomas's poor health, with claims that the father had been seen walking with a cane recently. Their new life in a high-rise flat in the Philippines's fifth largest city is world's away from the luxury lifestyle his daughter and family enjoy in Montecito, California. But with the rift between father and daughter still as wide as ever, it seems unlikely Thomas will be making the 7,000-mile journey to reunite with Meghan any time soon.
