Coach, Khabib Nurmagomedov agree: Jack Della Maddalena toughest test for Islam Makhachev
Former 155-pound champion Islam Makhachev (27-1 MMA, 16-1 UFC) will look to claim a second UFC belt when he challenges welterweight champion Della Maddalena (18-2 MMA, 8-0 UFC) later in the year.
Nurmagomedov called Della Maddalena Makhachev's toughest fight – even over lightweight champion Ilia Topuria, and their head coach Mendez agrees.
"I'm going to have to one million percent agree with Khabib, I think this is our toughest test," Mendez told MMA Junkie. "This is my and Khabib's biggest responsibility to make sure we get Islam in tip-top shape and ready to do what we think and what we believe he will do, and that's win, but it's not going to be easy.
"If we make it look easy, it's because we were properly prepared, and Jack just happened to give us what we needed, but this is by no means a walkover fight. This is a really tough fight, and we have immense respect for Jack and their team and what they can do."
So what makes Della Maddalena such a threat?
"I think what makes JDM so dangerous No. 1 is he's unbeaten for quite a while," Mendez said. "He's had quite a long win streak, and the fact that this guy mixes it up extremely well. He goes to the body, to the head, and he doesn't just stick to head hunting. He mixes it all up. He goes body, punch, then also the kick comes.
"With him, his takedown defense is really, really good also. So, we are not in a situation where we can think we're going to go to the ground. No, we got to see what he's going to give us, and probably we're going to have to make him give us something because I don't know if he's going to. He's really that good."
Mendez assures that unlike Belal Muhammad, who opted to mainly stand and strike with Della Maddalena in his UFC 315 title loss, Makhachev won't divert from the game plan.
"When I looked at Belal, he stuck primarily to one thing, was more the standup," Mendez told MMA Junkie. "With Islam, I've always told everybody, we can switch up second for second, minute for minute, round for round. Whatever Khabib and I, and the other coaches need to do, we will do and Islam will follow our instructions. He always has. If there's one thing I can say about Islam is whatever I say, Khabib says, we're on the same track, we're not on the same track, he listens to us."

Aaron Pico gets UFC 319 co-main event vs. Lerone Murphy
Aaron Pico's UFC debut won't come vs. Movsar Evloev after all. Initially scheduled for UFC on ABC 9, Pico (13-4 MMA, 0-0 UFC) will now fight Lerone Murphy in the co-main event for UFC 319 on Aug. 16 in Chicago. The new matchup was officially announced during the UFC on ABC 9 broadcast. Evloev (19-0 MMA, 9-0 UFC) withdrew from Pico's initially-scheduled July 26 debut due to an illness and the promotion removed Pico from the card thereafter. Once news broke of the cancellation, Pico voiced on social media his hope for a rebooking at United Center, but now he'll be fighting Murphy (16-0-1 MMA, 8-0-1 UFC) instead. The fight will mark Pico's highly anticipated debut after fighting his entire career in Bellator and PFL. Prior to his MMA debut, Pico was dubbed a prodigy for his extensive training background in wrestling and boxing. There were ups and downs as Pico matured in the international spotlight, but his recent outings have shown a highly-diversified game. Murphy has yet to lose in his UFC career. His promotional wins include Dan Ige, Edson Barboza, and most recently Josh Emmett. With the addition, here's the latest UFC 319 lineup:

UFC on ABC 9 video: Bogdan Guskov punishes Nikita Krylov with brutal barrage
Bogdan Guskov continues to dish out violence. At UFC on ABC 9 on Saturday, Guskov (18-3 MMA, 4-1 UFC) pounded out Nikita Krylov for the first-round TKO stoppage at 4:18 of Round 1. The light heavyweight bout took place at Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi. The opening minutes were measured as both men relied on their technique as their guide. However, a slow leg kick from Krylov (30-11 MMA, 11-9 UFC) was his undoing. Guskov countered beautifully with a massive punch that sat Krylov down. Follow-up punches bounced Krylov's head off the canvas. Krylov reached for a leg, but opened himself up for more damage. Flattened out, Guskov continued to punch away until referee Marc Goddard stepped in. Guskov, 32, has won four fights in a row since a UFC debut loss to Volkan Oezdemir. Previous promotional wins include Zac Pauga, Ryan Spann, and Billy Elekana. Krylov, 33, has now lost two consecutive fights. Up-to-the-minute UFC on ABC 9 results
