RM3.44mil in smuggled plants seized, two lorry drivers arrested in Kelantan
KOTA BARU: Separate operations under Op Taring Wawasan Kelantan led to the seizure of over RM3.44 million worth of ornamental plants, believed to be smuggled from Thailand, and the arrest of two lorry drivers.
The raids which were carried out over the weekend by the General Operations Force's (GOF) 18th and EightBattalions in Jeram Perdah and Chabang Empat here, also resulting in the arrests of two local men and the confiscation of two lorries used in the smuggling activities.
GOF Southeast Brigade commander Datuk Nik Ros Azhan Nik Ab Hamid said the first incident occurred on Sunday at 7.30pm when the GOF personnel from the 18th Battalion spotted a suspicious lorry near Pos Pok Teh Kana.
"Checks revealed 15,000 green bamboo plants and 30 casuarina trees in the vehicle, believed to have been smuggled from Thailand," he said in a statement today.
Ros Azhan said the lorry driver, a 23-year-old man, was also detained.
The total seizure, including the lorry, was valued at RM1.02 million.
Later the same night, at around 10pm, he said the second team from the Eighth Battalion stopped another suspicious lorry along Jalan Kampung Ana, Chabang Empat.
Inside, officers found 115 black wood bonsai trees, 3,000 jasmine plants and various types of flowers, Ros Azhan said.
The estimated value of the seizure was RM2.42 million.
The 42-year-old driver, who was arrested, told the GOF personnel that he was delivering the plants to a nursery in Perak, Ros Azhan said.

Meanwhile, Op Taring Bravo in Miri on June 25 led to the arrest of two men aged 32 and 45, along with the seizure of 39,300 litres of diesel stored without a permit. A storage tank and a lorry were also taken, with the total seizure valued at RM486,065. The final operation, Op Taring Awas in Lundu on June 28, saw three men aged 23 to 36 arrested after GOF officers found 0.32 grams of suspected methamphetamine in their vehicle. The total seizure, including the car, was worth RM50,100. From January 1 to June 30, Sarawak GOF recorded total seizures worth RM290.3 million, involving 236 cases and 355 arrests. Among those detained were 264 locals and 91 foreigners, with 193 vehicles impounded.

KUCHING, June 30 — The General Operations Force (GOF) Sarawak Brigade has crippled four criminal activities through Op Taring Alpha, Op Taring Bravo, Op Taring Awas, and Op Libas, where the total seizures reached around RM5.5 million. GOF Sarawak Brigade commander SAC Dr Che Ghazali Che Awang said the biggest haul was during Op Libas conducted in Sibu on June 24, where a team from Sibu GOF Battalion 10 raided a location suspected to be conducting illegal logging without valid permits. 'During the raid, the team apprehended three suspects aged 39 to 57, found 350 timbers of various sizes at the location, and seized a wood-cutting machine. 'The seizures amounted to RM3.5 million,' he said in a statement. Che Ghazali said the seized items were handed over to the Sibu Division Forest Department for further action and investigation under Section 96 of the Sarawak Forestry Ordinance 2015. In a second operation on June 23, GOF Kuching personnel raided a premises here believed to be used to store contraband liquor. Che Ghazali said five men aged 26 to 36 were arrested and 32,736 litres of alcohol as well as a lorry worth a total of RM1.45 million were seized. The case had been handed over to Lundu District police headquarters and further investigation under Section 12 (2) and Section 15(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
