ED filed closure reports in 49 PMLA cases over last 10 years: Govt
New Delhi, Jul 29 (PTI) The Enforcement Directorate (ED) over the last 10-and-a- half years, has filed closure reports in 49 cases before special courts meant to try anti-money laundering crimes, the government informed Parliament on Tuesday. The agency secured eight conviction orders involving 15 people from the special Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) courts between 2015 to June 2025, Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary said in a written statement furnished in Rajya Sabha. He was asked about the details of all cases lodged by the ED since 2015 where charge sheets have not yet been filed in courts, trial of the accused has not started and prosecution has been closed by the federal probe agency. 'During the period from 01.01.2015 to 30.06.2025, the Directorate of Enforcement has taken up 5,892 cases for investigation under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002," the minister said. In these cases, 1,398 prosecution complaints including 353 supplementary charge sheets have been filed before the respective special courts under PMLA, he said. Out of these, so far, the special courts have framed charges in 300 prosecution complaints including 66 supplementary charge sheets, Chaudhary said. 'As on 30.06.2025, the PMLA special courts have convicted 15 persons in 08 conviction orders in these cases," he stated. According to the scheme of PMLA, money laundering cases are only registered after taking cognisance of a predicate offence or primary case booked under various sections of the IPC or BNS and other laws. The courts have held that if the primary case falls before a court of law, the PMLA case will automatically go away. 'Driver Fell Asleep...': Locals Recall Bus Crash That Killed 18 Kanwariyas In Deoghar
Last Updated: A bus carrying Kanwar Yatra pilgrims crashed into a gas cylinder truck and roadside bricks near Jamunia Chowk, Bihar-Jharkhand border, killing 18 News18 What began as a spiritual pilgrimage ended in horror on Tuesday morning when a momentary lapse by a bus driver cost 18 lives and left 23 others injured near the Bihar-Jharkhand border. Around 4:30 am, a private bus ferrying Kanwariyas returning from their yatra to Baba Baidyanath temple rammed into a truck carrying gas cylinders near the Jamunia forest area under Mohanpur block in Jharkhand's Deoghar district. The driver, officials say, had dozed off at the wheel. The impact was immediate and catastrophic. The bus driver died on the spot. But the worst wasn't over. With no one at the wheel, the vehicle hurtled on for nearly 500 metres, ultimately smashing into a roadside heap of bricks near Jamunia Chowk. Six more people were killed on the spot, and many others suffered grievous injuries. Eyewitness accounts and police statements suggest that the death toll may still rise. 'Almost everyone in the bus was returning after worshipping… The driver had probably fallen asleep, that's when all this happened," said Ramanuj Yadav, a local resident who witnessed the wreckage and helped with rescue efforts. The bus, a 32-seater, was en route to Basukinath when the collision occurred. The truck it crashed into was transporting highly flammable gas cylinders, heightening the risk and panic at the scene. Fortunately, there was no fire. Inspector General of Dumka Zone Shailendra Kumar Sinha confirmed the details and said investigations are underway. 'A bus carrying Kanwariyas collided with a gas-laden truck. Several of the injured are critical," he noted. This tragic crash has cast a long shadow over the month of Shravan, a time otherwise marked by chants, devotion, and saffron-clad faith. Delhi Police busts counterfeit automobile parts racket; 11 held
New Delhi, Jul 29 (PTI) A large-scale racket operating out of Delhi's Karol Bagh area involved in the manufacturing and distribution of fake automobile spare parts under the branding of reputed international automobile companies has been busted, an official on Tuesday said. He said that raids were conducted on four separate premises in the Karol Bagh area on July 26, leading to the seizure of counterfeit spare parts worth approximately Rs 50 lakh and unaccounted cash amounting to Rs 19 lakh. A total of 11 people, including the alleged kingpin Dheeraj Singh (38), were apprehended, the official said. The gang reportedly sourced low-grade parts at cheap rates from unverified manufacturers, repackaged them with fake branding and distributed them across Delhi-NCR, falsely claiming the parts to be Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) surplus or export rejects. Most of the transactions were conducted in cash and through untraceable UPI accounts, using fake invoices to avoid detection, police said. In some cases, the group also used online marketplaces and classified ads to sell the fake parts under the guise of genuine spares, they said. 'The seized materials include over one lakh duplicate spare parts such as brake pads, filters, clutch plates, and spark plugs, along with 200 bottles of counterfeit branded engine oils, forged packaging, stickers, holograms, printing equipment and Rs 19 lakh in cash," said Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Crime, Aditya Gautam. The operation targeted four properties in Nai Walan, Guru Nanak Market, Subhash Mohalla and Pusha Lane in Karol Bagh, police said. The raiding teams apprehended individuals involved in various roles — from storage and packaging to branding and supply of counterfeit parts, they said. Among those arrested is Dheeraj, believed to be the kingpin, who has been involved in the illegal trade for the past four years, police said. 'The other key players include Amit Singh, who handled logistics and accounting; Dipankar Nagpal alias Vicky, who ran a packaging business supplying counterfeit labels and holograms; and Harsh Kumar and Rinku, who managed sales and distribution of fake parts," the DCP said. The counterfeit parts were designed to closely mimic packaging and appearance of genuine branded components, making it difficult for customers or mechanics to distinguish them, police said. Some of the parts — such as brake shoes and pads — are critical to vehicle safety and pose a significant risk to public safety if used, they said. A case was registered at the Crime Branch Police Station on July 27 under relevant sections of the Copyright Act, police said. Further investigation is underway to trace the wider network of suppliers, buyers and financiers associated with the racket, they said.
