Broncos player tipped to emulate Payne Haas as teammate set for weeks on sideline

Broncos veteran Corey Jensen is expected to miss a number of weeks due to a blood clot with his teammates expecting Xavier Willison to step up in his absence. Jensen was a late withdrawal from the Broncos side to defeat the Bulldogs last week due to a calf injury.
However, it has been reported Jensen endured a blood clot in the calf and will be expected to sit out a number of weeks to recover. And in his absence Willison made his mark on the game against the Bulldogs.
Without Haas and Jensen, Willison stood up and played 68 minutes for his side in the shock victory. The 22-year-old ran for 203 metres and made 43 tackles in a barnstorming effort that saw Michael Maguire's side comeback from a 16-0 half-time deficit.
Willison has been named to start alongside Haas this weekend, but doubt remains over whether the NSW forward will back-up after State of Origin. Regardless, Willison wants to lock down a starting role in Maguire's side as he looks to improve on his recent form.
"I got that starting opportunity, so I really wanted to go out there and prove myself," Willison said. "It was more minutes and I just kept doing what I do usually ... run hard and tackle hard. I just think that it was my time to step up." And his teammates have noticed his recent efforts on the field.

Broncos forward Kobe Hetherington has led the praise for Willison after his game last weekend. Hetherington has been impressed with the 22-year-old's ability this season and even compared him to arguably the best front-rower in the game.
"Xavier Haas we are calling him. He stood up and is killing it with his defence and carries," Hetherington said. "If he keeps playing like that he will be a wrecking force in the NRL. He's just got to stay consistent. He is only young and it is scary to think where he can get to."
Broncos fans may have an exciting forward pack developing with Willison joining elite front-rowers Patrick Carrigan and Haas this year. Despite his recent form, Willison is just taking it one game at a time and is looking forward to the Titans clash.
"It's another chance to prove myself again and play some big minutes," he said. "I just have to play my game - what I have been doing - and try not to overthink it."
Ben Hunt has also been named to take on the Titans this weekend. The veteran recruit injured himself against the Rabbitohs and hasn't played since round 10.
The 35-year-old was playing five-eighth before his injury, but with Ezra Mam's return the veteran is expected to switch to dummy-half. Having played plenty of No.9 for Queensland in State of Origin, Hunt could add some more experience to the spine, before the utility comes on.
"Everyone knows how good a player he is," Hetherington said of Hunt. "He is in the leadership group for a reason and brings that leadership, and all us younger fellas get around him. He is such a good talker and is tough as well. We have seen what he has done at Origin playing that hooker role, so if he can bring that back here the boys will be cheering."

Roosters playmaker tipped to make imminent exit stunning recall of Chad Townsend

Roosters fans are speculating whether Sandon Smith has played his final game for the NRL club after Chad Townsend got the nod to replace the injured Hugo Savala. Trent Robinson has named Townsend and Sam Walker in the halves to take on the Sharks on Friday night, after Savala suffered a hand injury last weekend. With Savala expected to miss two matches, Roosters fans were thinking Smith would receive an immediate recall after being dropped to NSW Cup last weekend. But Robinson went with Townsend instead, sparking speculation about Smith's future at the club. The 22-year-old Smith is contracted to the Roosters until the end of 2026, but has reportedly been shopped to rival clubs in preparation for Daly Cherry-Evans' possible arrival next season. Smith has been linked to the Eels, Dragons and Cowboys in recent times, and the Roosters are reportedly happy for him to leave if he can secure a deal elsewhere. Smith and Savala have been brilliant for the Roosters in 2025, stepping up to fill the void left by Walker's ACL injury. But Smith was the man axed when Walker made his return against the Dragons last weekend, with Robinson preferring a Walker-Savala halves combo. With Savala now injured, Robinson has opted to recall Townsend from the wilderness. A premiership player with Cronulla in 2016, Townsend will take on his former club after being axed by Robinson in Round 6. The 34-year-old played the first five games of the season after signing from North Queensland, but has been toiling in reserve grade ever since. Roosters fans were stunned on Tuesday that Smith wasn't recalled, and many think it signals he'll leave the club. The 'Roosters Podcast' account wrote: "Sandon losing his spot to Savala signalled to us he was on the way out…certainly didn't expect this though." While Daily Telegraph columnist 'The Oracle' commented: "Never thought I'd see the name Chad Townsend in first grade this year. Can't work that out. Unlikely Sandon Smith will be at the club next year." I can't believe Chad Townsend has been selected over Sandon has been in superb form this season. Solid in defence, speed to burn and with a great kicking game - and he can kick goals too!Sandon and Sammy would be a dream halves combination.#EastsToWin 🐔#NRL — Nick Hendrix (@hendrix_uk) July 15, 2025 Or they wanted a kicking half which Smith is not a as good of a kicker as Chad or Savala — Make the NRL great again! (@kdot_1234) July 15, 2025 Could it be that they want to consolidate Walker's combo on the left and Chad is a right half, whilst Sandon is left only? — 𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐂𝐨𝐚𝐜𝐡 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐥 (@NRLSCC) July 15, 2025 The Roosters started playing well when Chad was replaced by Hugo, kicking game is appalling, odd decision on the surface, Sandon is the obvious choice on the outside. — SnowmanNFT (@NftSnowman) July 15, 2025 Think I re-read over the team 3 times to make sure I wasn't making a mistake…🤬 — Duke25 (@Duke2517) July 15, 2025 But according to Roosters great Bryan Fletcher, it might around Townsend's kicking game. Fletcher pointed out that neither of Walker and Smith have the same long kicking game that Savala possesses, but Townsend does. A halves combo of Walker and Smith might struggle to get the Roosters out of trouble on the fifth tackle. "I thought they might have gone with Sandon Smith, but I reckon it's got to do with the kicking game," he said on SEN radio. "The Roosters last year, they couldn't get out of their own half when they were in trouble. Sam Walker, Sandon Smith and Luke Keary (last year), none of them are long kickers. "Hugo was the saviour. They could turn an average set into a pretty good set with his long bombs. So I think that's why the Chad gets his recall." It's been so good watching Hugo kill it this year. It's just a little setback and he'll hopefully be back in a couple of weeks. 'He'll build his combo with Sam and hopefully get that right for the finals series. One of his (Walker's) biggest strengths is his game management, so he always knows what the team needs at the right time. Having him out there with his composure was big for us.'

Fury over ban for Panthers player after Parramatta rival cops season-ending injury

NRL fans are questioning why Panthers centre Izack Tago only copped a one-game suspension for a hip-drop tackle that has all-but ended the season of Parramatta forward Kitione Kautoga. Tago was hit with a grade two charge for dangerous contact and received a one-game ban, after his tackle saw Kautoga suffer a syndesmosis injury on Sunday. The breakout Eels forward was having a brilliant debut season, but he's unlikely to play again in 2025. The Eels revealed on Tuesday that Kautoga requires surgery on his foot and will miss 6-8 weeks. With just eight games remaining in the regular season, it's unlikely that Kautoga will get back on the field. The news about Kautoga's season-ending injury has sparked fresh fury that Tago will only miss one match. Because it's the Panthers centre's first hip-drop offence, he got off fairly lightly. Kitione Kautoga suffered a syndesmosis injury and will undergo surgery to have it repaired. He will be out for 8 weeks. Therefore his season is over. — NRLCentral (@centralNRL) July 15, 2025 But fans are questioning why players are still performing hip-drop tackles when they've been banned for the last few years. And considering how long it's been an issue, many feel a one-game suspension simply isn't good enough. One fan wrote on social media: "Kautoga is out for the season after Tago's hip drop. Tago gets 1 week. Meanwhile Ryley Smith, Kelma Tuilagi and Will Penisini are yet to return from tackles that injured no one." Another wrote: "A 1 week suspension for a first hip drop offence is laughably inadequate if the NRL want to be serious about cracking down on them." While others labelled the punishment a "joke" and a "farce". So he's had surgery and out for the rest of the season and Tago got how many weeks suspension? 1 bloody gets 3 weeks for a crusher where JDB gets up and plays @NRL needs to make the suspension fit the crime. — DOC🇦🇺🇦🇺 (@drmeinoz) July 15, 2025 Make it make sense @NRL — Sandy (@sandyhunter2) July 15, 2025 That is a massive slap on the wrist - won't deter players from doing it again. Good job NRL — Burkey (@Allblackjack) July 15, 2025 And tago gets 1 week? 😂😂😂 — Jeremy Borg (@mgrjez) July 15, 2025 Adding to the frustration of Parramatta fans was the fact Tago's tackle wasn't even penalised at the time. If the on-field referee and Bunker official had spotted it, Tago would have likely been sin-binned. When asked if it was frustrating that Tago's tackle didn't draw a penalty, Parramatta coach Jason Ryles said: "Very". He added: "We've had a couple of syndesmosis injuries this year, so our performance team's had a bit of practice on rehabbing them." Less than a minute after Kautoga limped from the field, the Panthers took the half-time lead through a Luke Garner try and never relinquished it. Tago will miss Friday night's game against South Sydney, but the Panthers have the luxury of slotting State of Origin star Brian To'o into the backline to replace him. RELATED: Knights offer contracts to two State of Origin players amid Ponga blow New footage highlights truth about Broncos after Walsh and Staggs clash Tago's ban comes after Panthers teammate Scott Sorensen also copped a two-game suspension for a hip-drop-style tackle that injured Warriors winger Dallin Watene-Zelezniak in Round 16. Coincidentally, Sorensen is back this week in a timely boost with Nathan Cleary and Isaah Yeo rested. As for the Eels, Jack Williams has shifted to second-row against Canberra to replace the injured Kautoga, with J'maine Hopgood named to start at prop. Charlie Guymer retains his place in the back-row after playing 80 minutes there against Penrith. with AAP

Sauce Gardner's contract makes Pat Surtain look like an insane bargain for Broncos

When the Denver Broncos gave cornerback Pat Surtain a massive four-year, $96 million contract extension last September, it made him the highest-paid defensive back in NFL history. That was short-lived. Not long after PS2 signed a deal that averaged $24 million per season, Jalen Ramsey got a contract that averaged $24.1M. Later, Jaycee Horn got $25M. Then Derek Stingley took the market to another level with $30M. Advertisement The latest big cornerback extension has gone to Sauce Gardner of the New York Jets. He'll get $120.4 million over four years, an average of $30.1M, making him the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL. So, just ten months after becoming the highest-paid ever at his position, Surtain now ranks fifth among cornerbacks in terms of average salary. His contract looks like a remarkable bargain for the Broncos. Highest-paid NFL cornerbacks (APY) Sauce Gardner: $30.1M Derek Stingley.: $30M Jaycee Horn: $25M Jalen Ramsey: $24.1M Patrick Surtain: $24M Surtain, who won the NFL's Defensive Player of the Year award in 2024, is widely considered the best cornerback in the league. If the CB market continues trending this way, Denver might have to revisit PS2's contract well before it's set to expire in 2030. Less than a year after getting a massive extension, Surtain now appears to be underpaid. Advertisement Social: Follow Broncos Wire on Facebook and Twitter/X!
