Food Picks: New artist-inspired menu at Shisen Hanten by Chen Kentaro
SINGAPORE – One-Michelin-starred Shisen Hanten by Chen Kentaro has rolled out a seven-course menu ($108++ a person) inspired by the friendship between two late cultural icons from Sichuan, China – chef Chen Kenmin, considered the Grandfather of Sichuan Cuisine in Japan, and renowned Chinese ink painter Zhang Daqian.
The menu revives dishes once enjoyed by Zhang, who is also known to be a f ood connoisseur, during his visits to the Shisen Hanten restaurant in Tokyo.
My favourite dishes on the menu are the chicken liver chawanmushi with a rich crab roe sauce and a soupy version of dan dan noodles, served with minced pork and a chicken soup made with sesame paste, Japanese soya sauce and housemade chilli oil.
I guess Zhang is also quite the meat lover, as the menu includes chilled steamed chicken with Sichuan sauce; tea smoked duck; and fried chicken with hot pepper sauce, a spin on gong bao chicken with painstakingly scored mushrooms and pepper s.
Besides this menu, the restaurant has also launched its new summer menu for its eight-seat Chef's Table space, priced at $268++ a person. It will run till August or September, depending on the seasonal availability of the ingredients.

You can try your hand at making that decision – and more – at Heartbeats And Headlines: 180 Years Of Telling The Singapore Story . This is an interactive roving exhibition by ST, part of a series of events organised to celebrate the newspaper's 180th anniversary in 2025. ST published its first edition on July 15, 1845. Look out also for scenes of Singapore of yesteryear – places like Clarke Quay and the Padang that your parents and grandparents would have seen develop over the years – and compare these with how much the nation has changed since then. These images all come from the ST archives. Last but not least, 'time travel' with ST to any date between July 15, 1845 and the present. You can find out what made the front page on the day you were born, or on your wedding day. The exhibition traces ST's journey from a colonial newspaper to a national broadsheet, and its evolution into the multi-platform media outlet that it is today. It also takes visitors through various milestones, including war and occupation in 1942, the nation's dramatic exit from Malaysia in 1965, the very first MRT trains starting service in 1987, and the national football team's victory in the Malaysia Cup in 1994. Visitors can complete activities to receive limited-edition gifts like a tote bag or notebook – available only at this exhibition, while stocks last. The exhibition, which was at Jewel Changi Airport earlier in July, will be at Westgate from July 25 to Aug 3, before concluding its run at Raffles City Shopping Centre following an Aug 8 to 17 display. LONDON - American pop megastar Taylor Swift will be honoured with 13 waxworks of her at Madame Tussauds venues around the globe, the museum said on July 23. In honour of Swift's lucky number, 13 of the waxwork museum's 22 branches will each receive a statue of the Love Story (2008) and Blank Space (2014) singer, in what it called the 'most ambitious project' of its 250-year history. The statues were inspired by some of the 35-year-old songwriting sensation's looks from her record-shattering Eras Tour from 2023 to 2024. With 149 shows across the world over nearly two years, the tour raked in US$2 billion (S$2.6 billion), making it the most lucrative in music history to date. More than 40 artists worked for more than a year on the statues of Swift, one of the most acclaimed artistes of her generation with 14 Grammy Awards. 'This is the most ambitious project in Madame Tussauds' 250-year history, which only feels right to reflect the stratospheric status of Taylor Swift,' said Ms Danielle Cullen, the museum's senior figure stylist.
