Title: Hall pleased amid 'tough' conditions
Content: G Hall -1 (71)
Former Women's Open champion
Georgia Hall was pleased with a one-under-par round in what she called "tough" conditions because of the wind on the south Wales coastline.
"I love this
event and obviously a home event - I have people supporting me much more than I
do when I play in America. This is one I really strive to do well in," said Hall, the most recent British winner, having triumphed at
Lytham in 2018.
"I am just
happy to have a good first round and also play this golf course. I think it's one of the best that we have actually. It's very tough, especially when the
wind gets up."

England's Mimi Rhodes finds herself in difficulty once again after a loose approach shot, and, once again, she has an eight-footer to save par.
But, once again, her putt is perfect, right in the middle of the hole.
She has some momentum going into the par-five 18th, with a chance to close up to the two leaders.

Title: 'I am happy I hung in there' - Woad
Content: Woad E (72)
Lottie Woad described her opening round as "OK" after a birdie on 18 saw the pre-tournament favourite finish on level par.
"It was a bit mixed," the 21-year-old said. "I had a good amount of birdies but a few poor bogeys on the front nine.
"It was nice to finish with a birdie on the last."
Woad also made birdie on the first hole as well as the sixth and 14th, but four bogeys alongside those mean she currently trails the leaders by five shots.
"It's one of those rounds that could have got away from me so I am happy I hung in there," Woad added.

just the second major of her career.
"It was a
really good start and I am very happy," Wales' Harry said.
"I didn't think
I would come off with two under par today. I am not too sure why - I was just
super nervous - but it was great out there."
Harry said
the wind today, which was very testing at times, was about average for Royal
Porthcawl.
"This is the
normal wind strength," she added. "It got up and it got down - it was a bit of
a mix."

Newcastle make Benjamin Sesko bid with Alexander Isak's future ‘complex'

Newcastle have made an official bid to sign RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko after boss Eddie Howe admitted the situation surrounding unsettled star Alexander Isak was 'far from ideal'. All eyes are on St James' Park right now as the Premier League club look to keep the Swedish sharpshooter while also attempting to bring in a big-name striker. Advertisement The PA news agency understands Newcastle have accelerated talks with Leipzig to sign Sesko – who Manchester United also have in their sights – and submitted an offer reportedly worth up to £69.7million. The development comes after the Magpies rejected a £110m bid for Isak on Friday from Liverpool, who recently beat them to the signing of Frankfurt frontman Hugo Ekitike. Alexander Isak scored in Newcastle's Carabao Cup final win against Liverpool (Owen Humphreys/PA) 'I think from my situation, I am very much removed from everything that is happening back home,' Newcastle boss Howe said on Isak. 'I was made aware that there was a bid yesterday. That bid was turned down all before I even heard about it, so I think there's people back in England dealing with the situation. Advertisement 'I really don't know what's going to happen next, but from our perspective we still support Alex in every way, and my wish is still that we see him in a Newcastle shirt again.' Isak did not travel to Asia for Newcastle's pre-season tour due to what the club called a 'minor thigh injury', only for talk of his unhappiness to emerge. Howe admitted 'you don't know what's going to happen from this point' and, surprisingly, that he found out that the 25-year-old was training at former club Real Sociedad through the media. 'I know where he is, really, through the media, so I think from that perspective it's difficult for me to go into any kind of detail,' the Newcastle boss said at a press conference in Seoul previewing a friendly against Tottenham. Advertisement 'The situation is far from ideal and it is quite complex. I think that's all I have got to say.' Isak is reportedly set to return to the north east on Saturday and resume training with Newcastle, whose pursuit of Slovenia international Sesko was something Howe remained tight-lipped about. Newcastle and Manchester United are both pursuing Benjamin Sesko (Bradley Collyer/PA) The manager said 'he can't talk about individual targets' in the wake of reports in the striker's homeland overnight claiming that the 22-year-old wants to move to St James' Park rather than Old Trafford. Newcastle have now reportedly made a 75m euros (£65.4m) bid to Leipzig, with a further 5m euros (£4.3m) in potential add-ons. Advertisement Sesko was conspicuous by his absence from the Bundesliga club's squad for their friendly against Atalanta on Saturday afternoon. Howe said: 'We are looking for the best players that we can get. Whatever our target position is, we're looking for the best, so I see all situations open and available to us. Final session out in South Korea. 👊 — Newcastle United (@NUFC) August 2, 2025 'I feel that's the only way that we're going to get to where we want to go, which is to maximise, and it's quality over quantity. It always has been. 'That's always been the way that we try to work and try to recruit, and I think we've done it pretty well to this point. Advertisement 'It's been a challenging summer, as you know, because we've missed out on various targets for loads of different reasons. 'But we're still very competitive and we're still in there trying to bring very good players to the club and that won't change until the window shuts.'

Newcastle seal loan move for ex-Arsenal stopper Aaron Ramsdale after Eddie Howe missed out on top target James Trafford to Man City

Newcastle have officially signed goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale on a season-long loan from Southampton. The former Arsenal shot-stopper, 27, emerged as a top target after the Magpies missed out on James Trafford, who instead opted to rejoin Manchester City from Burnley. Ramsdale started 30 Premier League games for Southampton last season, who were relegated to the Championship following a plum-last finish and a 12-point haul across the entire campaign. The England international reunites with Eddie Howe, whom he worked with at Bournemouth between 2016 and 2020. Indeed, both player and manager expressed excitement over their reunion on Tyneside. On joining Newcastle, Ramsdale said: 'It's great to be here. I've always loved coming here and I've seen how passionate and loud the fans can be. I've always loved playing here at St. James' Park - I've not always had the greatest of results, but when the fans get behind you it's some place. 'Coming to the stadium and seeing it empty today, it's quite surreal to think that this is going to be home for the foreseeable future. I've got the kit on, it's got the nice Champions League badge on the sleeve and I'm delighted to be here. 🤳 "Howay the lads!" — Newcastle United (@NUFC) August 2, 2025 'Working with the manager and his coaching staff again were a big draw for me. They've already had a great influence on my career and the gaffer turned me from a man into a professional footballer at Bournemouth. 'He really showed me the ropes so the manager and his coaching staff were a huge selling point for me to come here.' Meanwhile, Howe said: 'Aaron is an exceptional goalkeeper who adds further quality and international experience to our squad. 'Having worked with him before, I know what he can bring to us on and off the pitch, so we look forward to welcoming him into the group.' Ramsdale began his career in League One at Sheffield United before joining Bournemouth, where he was not handed an opportunity in the top flight until his final season at the club. After an impressive debut season in the Premier League in 2019-20, the 6ft 3in goalkeeper rejoined Sheffield. His one full season with the then-newly promoted club was enough to impress scouts at the Emirates, as he secured a £25million move to Arsenal. Ramsdale fell out of favour under Mikel Arteta in late 2023, having been replaced by David Raya. His search for consistent first-team football landed him at Southampton last summer.
