'My trip to Barnston Women's Institute where The Beatles played'
"She's here - get her a coffee... Cath, get the cake." Music to my ears, as welcoming as the bright flowers and bunting that greet visitors to this beautiful 100-year-old building on a sunny day.Back in 1962, four lads took to the very stage that I am now standing on.Pam shows me into the green room where The Beatles got changed before their gig.She explains that their manager Brian Epstein had wanted to smarten up the Fab Four's image."It was the first time The Beatles wore suits on stage."
About 20 women - some with paint brushes, some with needles, others weighed down by boules - are keen to say hello in a room filled with laughter."It's all about friendship," says Trish O'Malley, who has been coming here for about 12 years."It's something to do, but the friendship is the biggest thing."We talk, we laugh, we cry and we make it all better."Gerry Hitt, who moved to the area from Surrey three years ago, says the WI has been a lifeline."I felt lonely at first," she tells me. "It's hard to make friends face to face."But this has been lovely, especially the art."Pam is keen to tackle misconceptions about the organisation."There's a real stigma attached to the WI that it's just knitting and cake," she says."But we are so much more than that."We love the music, we love parties, we can't wait for our 100th anniversary party - it's going to be fantastic."
Beatles fans from all over the world still come to Barnston WI to see for themselves where the band played.Visitors are always very welcome, and they are keen to sign up new members. Thanks for the coffee, cakes and laughs!

BBC staff accuse corporation of ‘anti-Palestinian racism'
BBC staff have written to Tim Davie accusing the corporation of anti-Palestinian racism and of 'performing PR for the Israeli government and military'. They have called for the removal of Sir Robbie Gibb as a BBC board member because they alleged he has 'close ties' to the Jewish Chronicle. An open letter to the director-general signed by 107 BBC journalists – as well as celebrities including Charles Dance, Mike Leigh, Juliet Stevenson and Miriam Margolyes – claims that the corporation is 'an organisation that is crippled by the fear of being perceived as critical of the Israeli government'. The letter was signed by anonymous staff from BBC News, the World Service, BBC Arabic and Panorama, amongst others. One of the signatories is from the HR department. It has dismayed Jewish staff who fear there is an anti-Israel lobby within BBC News. The letter criticises the BBC's decision to drop a documentary about doctors in Gaza owing to impartiality concerns. The film will be shown tonight on Channel 4 instead. It singles out Sir Robbie, the former No 10 communications director under Theresa May, who is now a BBC Board member and sits on the editorial standards committee. 'We are concerned that an individual with close ties to the Jewish Chronicle, an outlet that has repeatedly published anti-Palestinian and often racist content, has a say in the BBC's editorial decisions in any capacity, including the decision not to broadcast Gaza: Medics Under Fire,' the letter reads. 'We believe the role of Robbie Gibb, both on the Board, and as part of the Editorial Standards Committee, is untenable.' In fact, Sir Robbie resigned as a director of the Jewish Chronicle last year. Sir Robbie and the newspaper have been contacted for comment. The BBC has been embroiled in numerous antisemitism rows including Saturday's Glastonbury coverage, when viewers saw punk-rap duo Bob Vylan chant 'death, death to the IDF' and 'from the river to the sea'. However, the letter claims that the true bias at the BBC is pro-Israeli. 'All too often it has felt that the BBC has been performing PR for the Israeli government and military. This should be a cause of great shame and concern for everyone at the BBC,' it says. The letter, addressed to Mr Davie and the BBC board, claims that the refusal to show the new Gaza documentary is 'just one in a long line of agenda-driven decisions' which 'demonstrates, once again, that the BBC is not reporting 'without fear or favour' when it comes to Israel'. 'As an organisation we have not offered any significant analysis of the UK government's involvement in the war on Palestinians. We have failed to report on weapons sales or their legal implications. These stories have instead been broken by the BBC's competitors. 'This hasn't happened by accident, rather by design. Much of the BBC's coverage in this area is defined by anti-Palestinian racism. The inconsistent manner in which guidance is applied draws into focus the role of Sir Robbie Gibb,' the letter reads. 'Failed to report the reality of the war on Palestinians' The staff claim that the BBC's news coverage ' has failed to report the reality and the context of the war on Palestinians '. Other named signatories on the list include William Dalrymple, the historian; Owen Jones, the Guardian columnist; Misan Harriman, the photographer favoured by the Duchess of Sussex; and Roger McKenzie, international editor of the Morning Star. The BBC commissioned the Gaza documentary, alternatively titled Gaza: Doctors Under Attack, but dropped it after concluding that 'broadcasting this material risked creating a perception of partiality that would not meet the high standards that the public rightly expect of the BBC'. The corporation previously released a documentary, Gaza: How To Survive A War Zone, without establishing that the child narrator was the son of a Hamas minister. A forthcoming report into the broadcast is expected to be highly critical of BBC News fact-checking. Responding to the letter, a BBC spokesperson said: ' Robust discussions amongst our editorial teams about our journalism are an essential part of the editorial process. We have ongoing discussions about coverage and listen to feedback from staff and we think these conversations are best had internally. 'Regarding our coverage of Gaza, the BBC is fully committed to covering the conflict impartially and has produced powerful coverage from the region.'

EastEnders' legend Natalie Cassidy looks unrecognisable after very glam glow up
EASTENDERS legend Natalie Cassidy looks worlds away from Sonia Jackson days after stunning makeover. Soap favourite Natalie Cassidy has left fans doing a double take after showing off a seriously glam new look. The actress, 42, ditched her usual casual style for a sleek new appearance, complete with flawless makeup, glossy hair and a chic outfit, while promoting her new book Happy Days with publisher Harper Collins. Known for playing trumpet-blowing nurse Sonia on the BBC soap since she was a teen, Natalie turned heads with her polished transformation. Taking to her Instagram stories, Natalie wowed in a black polka dot dress with a mesh hem, showing off her fun and feminine side. She's also switched up her signature brunette locks for a fresh blonde style, complete with voluminous, bouncy waves. Finishing off the look with bronzed cheeks, fluttery lashes and a nude lip, the soap star looked every inch the glam queen. This comes after the popular soap star took to her Instagram Stories for a fiery rant over the "terrible and made up" allegations. She screen-grabbed the article image and concerning headline, which read: "Natalie Cassidy Breaks Down as She Reveals Breast Cancer Diagnosis." It then allegedly featured a quote from the TV star which read: "I Didn't Want Anyone to Know..." She furiously wrote in her caption: "THIS IS DISGUSTING AND DISGRACEFUL. "So many people are going through this and I have had messages asking if I'm ok. EastEnders' Natalie Cassidy claims huge pop star used to BULLY her at school and reveals awkward confrontation "It is completely made up and a terrible story. "Take this down whoever you are." Meanwhile, Natalie and her co-host Joanna Page have been dealt a huge blow after the BBC failed to re-commission their podcast. The pair had teamed up for the audio show discussing all things on and off the box. Sonia Fowler's biggest EastEnders storylines Sonia Fowler has featured in EastEnders since 1993, and after starring in thousands of episodes, has been featured in storylines ranging from teenage pregnancy to a cancer scare. Here are some of her biggest. Teen Pregnancy and Birth of Chloe Jackson (1999-2000) Sonia discovered she was pregnant at the age of 15. Viewers were shocked by the sudden birth, as the teen went into labour without even realising she was pregnant. Martin Fowler turned out to be Chloe's father. Sonia initially decided to give the girl up for adoption. Death of her boyfriend (2002) Sonia's boyfriend, Jamie Mitchell, was hit by a car driven by her baby's father. Jamie had just bought an engagement ring for his girlfriend before being struck down by the thoughtless Martin, who was texting while driving. Although the Jamie was rushed to hospital, docs said his liver was irreparably damaged, and he ended up dying with Sonia by his side. Marriage to Martin Fowler and Family Tensions (2004-2007) In a shock twist Sonia went on to marry the man responsible for her previous boyfriend's death. Their relationship was marred by conflicts and infidelity, and they went on to split up after just three years. At one point in their marriage Sonia was taken hostage by Sarah Cairns, who became obsessed with Martin after he flirted with her during a drunken night out. The couple went through struggles again when the adoptive parents of their daughter were killed in a car crash, leaving them responsible for Rebecca. Because of the tension in their relationship Sonia ended up cheating on her husband with one of her co-workers, nurse Naomi Julien. Custody Battle for Rebecca (2005-2007) Baby Chloe, who was renamed Rebecca, was kidnapped by her mum early in life before being returned to her adoptive parents. After Neil and Sue Miller died they awarded Martin full custody of the child because of Sonia's extra-marital affair. The mum was left distraught to be cut out of her daughter's life. Gastric Band Surgery and Weight Struggles (2014-2015) Sonia became insecure about her weight and arranged to have a secret gastric band surgery in Bulgaria. She later collapsed at an exercise class after suffering complications from the operation. Discovery of Bex's Suicide Attempt (2019) Sonia's daughter Rebecca tried to take her own life in a heartbreaking storyline which left viewers in tears. She found Bex unconscious after taking an overdose, and was devastated. Sonia blamed herself for pushing her daughter to breaking point, as she had tried to force her into going to Oxford despite Bex saying she didn't feel ready for university. Natalie had addressed Masked Singer theories suggesting she was Bush - which proved to be correct - on the pod, as well as opening up on her nerves for EastEnders' 40th anniversary episode. Yet the episodes, which generally clock in at under an hour long, will now come to an end. Welsh screen star Joanna took to her Instagram Stories to post an image of the pair promoting their show and the words: "Our lovely pod is ending and we want to hear from you about your favourite Off The Telly moments. "Send us a voicenote," before stating the contact number. The Sun has reached out to the BBC for comment and a spokesperson told us: 'What started as a six month project turned into more than a year of joyous TV chatter, and over 80 heart-warming episodes. "Though they both loved making the series, Natalie Cassidy and Joanna Page have very busy schedules and on the 21st May, the final episode of Off the Telly will be released on BBC Sounds. "Thank you to Nat and Jo for their warm recommendations and insider analysis, and to the whole team for keeping listeners in the loop with what to watch. "We look forward to working with Nat and Jo again soon!" Natalie, who quit her EastEnders role as Sonia Fowler earlier this year, still has her own podcast, Life With Nat. 4 4

EXCLUSIVE The secret A-list insider working to reunite Dakota Johnson and Chris Martin after their shock split
It was the perfect pairing: a handsome British singer and a glamorous Hollywood star – and for eight years, Chris Martin and Dakota Johnson seemed on course for a happy ending. But three weeks ago, sources close to the former couple confirmed the pair's love story had flamed out – leaving Dakota 'devastated'. Now the Daily Mail can reveal one person still hasn't given up on the couple – the actress's mom Melanie Griffith who thinks the split is a 'huge mistake' and is working behind the scenes to bring them back together. A well-placed source told the Daily Mail: 'Melanie is desperately working behind the scenes to save Dakota's strained relationship with Chris. 'She's convinced that they are meant to be together and isn't giving up on them. She thinks her daughter is making a huge mistake and needs to meet Chris halfway. 'Melanie has always felt a kinship with Chris, he's like a son to her.' Dad-of-two Martin, 48, and acting royalty Dakota, 35, were first spotted together in 2017 and were most recently seen in May. The relationship had weathered multiple break-ups and make-ups according to sources, and the pair reportedly even became engaged in 2020. Dakota – whose dad is movie icon Don Johnson – even became close to Martin's two children, Apple and Moses, who he had with ex-wife Gwyneth Paltrow. Last year, she told glossy magazine Bustle: 'I love those kids like my life depends on it. With all my heart.' But that wasn't enough to prevent trouble in paradise with sources telling the Daily Mail that the pair had been having 'the same issues for some time'. While the couple themselves have called time, Griffith, 67, has refused to concede defeat and is now badgering the pair to get relationship therapy, as well as woo-woo 'energy work' in a bid to get them back on track. An insider dished: 'Melanie has been seeking advice from her friends in the healing community, mostly in the Malibu area. 'She's been trying to get Dakota and Chris to work with a non-traditional couple's therapist who incorporates energy work to help detect and detach generational trauma. 'She said all they need is some laser focus guidance to set them straight once and for all.' But while Griffith – who has a checkered relationship history of her own that includes divorcing Johnson twice and a high-profile marriage to actor Antonio Banderas – is dead set on saving Dakota's relationship, she is nervous of appearing 'meddlesome'. The insider added: 'Melanie doesn't want to be the meddlesome mother, but she has years of recovery and practices a solid spiritual program. 'She said she's coming from a place of authentic love for her daughter, rather than control. 'She wants them both to be happy, if they'd just leave their egos at the door and lead with their hearts.' That may be a tall order at the moment with rocker Martin currently touring with his band Coldplay while Dakota has been promoting her ironically named comedy Splitsville. As a result, sources say the pair have been leading increasingly separate lives with Martin playing dates in Las Vegas, Denver, and El Paso in the last three weeks alone. Also on the schedule are stops in Toronto, Nashville, and Miami next month, plus a succession of August dates at London's Wembley Stadium and a two-night stop in the down-at-heel Yorkshire town of Hull. Johnson is also promoting a second movie – romantic comedy Materialists in which she stars opposite Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal. The movie was released amid the split drama on June 13 and has grossed $24million in the US and Canada to date and $7million worldwide.
