caught a carrier, Mafizul Sheikh, from a compartment of the Gurumukhi Express following the recovery of unaccounted cash worth Rs 29.67 lakh at Pt Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Junction in Chandauli district after Sunday night.
Income Tax officials were investigating the matter.
GRP Inspector Sunil Kumar Singh said that when the Kolkata-bound Gurumukhi Express train reached PDDU Junction after midnight, he and RPF Inspector Pradeep Kumar Rawat, along with their teams, started checking its bogies as part of an alert sounded in view of the Shrawan month crowd. During the same drive, they reached a compartment where a youth identified as Mafizul Sheikh, a resident of Rampur Hat district, Birbhum, West Bengal, tried to escape on seeing men in khaki heading towards him.
On seeing this, the GRP and RPF personnel caught him and checked his bag, in which cash amounting to Rs 29.67 lakh was recovered. As he failed to produce any document in support of the huge cash being carried by him, he was taken to the GRP station, and officials of the Income Tax Department were called from Varanasi for further investigation.
He divulged that he boarded the Gurumukhi Express train from Nangal Dam to reach Kolkata for delivering the cash. However, he could not reveal the name of the person who gave him the cash or those who were to receive this amount from him in Kolkata.

Days after a retired NSG commandant was robbed at gunpoint at his home in Chawri Bazaar, police said four people, including a jewellery businessman, were arrested in the case. According to police, the businessman, Mohammad Kaif, was allegedly miffed after the 86-year-old victim, Bhim Sen — now a diamond and gems artisan — ended their business partnership. The other accused were identified as Aloknath Mishra, 35; Sohail Malik, 23; and Waseem, 48; police said. The incident took place on July 19 when Sen was at his house — which also doubles up as his office — along with his son Sandeep, daughter-in-law Neelam, and grandson. 'A man knocked on the door and called out the name of a family member. As soon as the door was opened, three masked assailants, armed with weapons, forced their way inside,' a police officer had said earlier. When the grandson resisted, one of the masked men took out a gun and tied his hands before taping his mouth, the officer had said. The intruders then looted jewellery and precious stones worth Rs 50 lakh, while also taking $3,550. They locked the family in the kitchen before fleeing. DCP (North) Raja Banthia said, 'Through sustained surveillance and intelligence analysis, it was established that three individuals were involved in the crime. These individuals were observed regrouping near Chawri Bazar Metro Station — two approached through nearby bylanes, while the third arrived in a TSR (three-wheeled scooter rickshaw) after deboarding a Metro train at Rajiv Chowk. Metro data later confirmed that this person had boarded the train from Noida City Centre.' A team led by Sub-Inspector Prashant found the TSR driver. 'The driver confirmed that he had picked up the individual from Connaught Place. The team found that the accused took another train back to Noida City Centre Metro station. He got off and drove away on a scooter,' the DCP said. The scooter was registered in the name of a junior engineer with the New Delhi Municipal Council, who lives in Noida. The engineer told the police that her scooter was being used by her driver, Aloknath Mishra. A trap was laid, and Mishra was arrested on Tuesday. 'Mishra admitted that the robbery had been orchestrated by Kaif as an act of revenge. Kaif hired Mishra, Sohail, and Waseem to execute the plan. Kaif was then arrested from his residence near Jama Masjid and Sohail was arrested from Mustafabad. They admitted that the proceeds of the robbery were with Waseem,' DCP Banthia said. Investigation showed that Waseem fled to Moradabad after the robbery and then went to Sambhal. He then booked a hotel in Roorkee, where he stayed for five days. 'Waseem kept his phone switched off most of the time, switching it on only for a few minutes daily — and always from a location away from his actual place of stay to mislead police. He hid the robbed jewels in Roorkee and was last tracked to Mussoorie,' Banthia said. A trap was laid at Library Chowk in Mussoorie, and the accused was arrested on July 27. Police have recovered the majority of the robbed amount. A police officer said Kaif started doing business with Sen in 2023, and has known him for 20 years. 'Kaif felt that Sen was visiting foreign countries and taking over his clients for his own business. This caused a monetary dispute between the two and led to a fallout,' the officer said.

Man who slipped into coma after BMW hit & run dies
Noida: Two days after a five-year-old girl died when a BMW car, allegedly driven by a student under the influence of alcohol, crashed into a scooter near the Sector 30 govt hospital, her 20-year-old uncle succumbed to his injuries. According to police, Raza suffered fractures to his head, leg and hands. He had slipped into a coma during treatment. He was being treated at a private hospital in Ghaziabad since Saturday midnight after the accident. He died late on Sunday. On Sunday, his five-year-old niece Ayaat had died in a hit-and-run incident before she could be taken to a hospital. Her father Gul Mohammad, also injured in the accident, continues to remain under observation at a private hospital in Sector 20. Drone sighting rumours spread to NCR villages, police field panic calls
Ghaziabad: After western UP and Uttarakhand, rumours about suspicious low-flying objects appear to have gripped several NCR villages. Over the last five days, the police control room in the city has received 47 calls reporting 'drone sightings', all from rural pockets in Bhojpur, Muradnagar, Niwari, Loni and Kotwali and 29 of them in the last 24 hours. The sightings have been followed by villagers standing patrol with sticks as rumours swirl. Locals believe gangs are using drones to spy on their houses and rob them. Reports of 'drone sightings' in other districts have been spreading through social media posts, some of which are accompanied by videos of drones. But their authenticity is questionable. According to police, the maximum number of calls (9) came from Bhojpur, which is close to Meerut, followed by three from Muradnagar and one from Kotwali. Police said most callers claimed to have seen drones hovering near rooftops late in the night. "All the calls were verified by local police units, but no drone was recovered or visually confirmed so far," DCP (rural) Surendra Nath Tiwari said. Under it, nine police station areas, including Kotwali, Kavi Nagar, Link Road, Sahibabad, Vijay Nagar, Tronica City, Loni, Modinagar and Muradnagar, were declared no-fly zones due to their proximity to the Hindon IAF base.
