Musk leans into raunchy Grok 'companions,' teasing new '50 Shades' inspired bot

NBC News5 days ago
Elon Musk's xAI is leaning into its over-the-top AI 'companions,' which the company debuted Monday. In the last day, the company has given several indications that it would be further investing in its companions product, which allows users to interact with stylized and animated characters that are powered by Grok, its AI chatbot.
The original companions, a red panda named Bad Rudi and an anime character named Ani, seemed designed to provoke controversy. Ani quickly becomes sexually explicit and Bad Rudi turns vulgar and violent. xAI appears to be leaning into the edgy brand with its most recent announcements.
The company is currently looking to hire a full-stack 'waifus' engineer. The job appears to have been posted sometime on Tuesday, a day after Musk announced the creation of Grok's Companions. 'Waifus' is a term that refers to fictional female anime characters with whom fans grow romantic associations with.
On Wednesday, Musk announced a third Grok companion that would emulate the personality of 'Edward Cullen from Twilight and Christian Grey from 50 Shades,' referring to the main characters in two book series. After going through potential names with users in the comments, Musk settled on 'Valentine,' after a character from the book, 'Stranger in a Strange Land' by Robert A. Heinlein.
Musk wrote Tuesday on X that the companions would soon be customizable and that users would be able to create their own custom and unique Companions.
But the over-sexualization of the characters has brought up concerns for some.
The National Center on Sexual Exploitation, a child-safety and anti-pornography nonprofit group, expressed concerns about minors having access to the sexualized chatbots, pointing out that users only need to be 12 or older to download the Grok app. The center called on Grok to either remove the explicit content from the app, or consult Apple to change its age restrictions to 18.
'These AI chatbots might feel like they care, but they don't,' Haley McNamara, the center's senior vice president of strategic initiatives and programs, wrote in a press release. 'And while features like 'spicy mode' or flirty avatars might seem like harmless fun, they're built to create compulsive engagement, through seductive language, suggestive visuals, and escalating emotional intimacy,'
The release drew attention to specific aspects of Ani's character that could be harmful, including providing 'descriptions of sexual acts she would like to do with the user' and 'disrobing to lingerie.'
These new changes to Grok have taken place as xAI has delved into more serious ventures. The same day that Musk announced the implementation of Companions on the Grok app, xAI also announced 'Grok for Government,' which will make Grok AI products available to federal government departments, agencies and offices to purchase.
The Department of Defense also announced that it would be granting contract awards of up to $200 million for AI development to xAI, OpenAI, Anthropic and Google.

Amazon's £160 smartwatch with 'refined style' dropped to £36

Shoppers were full of love for this affordable timepiece that does so much for a discount smartwatch Amazon shoppers have been praising a smartwatch that was discounted by more than £120 during a sale. People loved the fact that its "sporty and rugged design" made it "perfect for daily use or workouts" Normally £159.99, the Military Smart Watch by Atheewon is discounted by a massive 80%, cutting the final price down to just under £35.99. Built with a "rugged" look, this military-style smartwatch is "built to endure the toughest environments", Amazon claims. It boasts being "shockproof, drop-resistant and scratch-resistant" with a remarkable level of protection against "daily wear and extreme conditions". The online listing suggests that the device can stayed powered up for days after just two hours of charging. The device offers all you'd expect from a smartwatch for a fraction of the price of leading models like Apple and FitBit, like call, text and social media notifications. The watch comes in two colour choices - midnight retro blue (which is discounted) or casual black (which is full priced). For the fitness fanatics, the waterproof watch offers a range of features to make training and tracking progress effortless. With more than 110 programmed sport modes, it "analyses data in real time to help optimise training results and achieve exercise goals easily", Amazon adds. There are similar devices on the market for people wanting an affordable way into the smartwatch world without spending hundreds of pounds. For example, Sports Direct is offering this Karrimor Smart Watch (£19.99, down from £49.99) and the Reflex Active Series 23 Smart Watch from Currys (£39.99). But, Amazon shoppers have been praising this "sporty" watch. One said: "It brilliantly combines robust design, technical performance and sporty versatility. "Whether you are sporty, adventurous or simply a fan of smart gadgets, this smartwatch will accompany you everywhere, while enhancing your wrist." Another added: "I liked this smartwatch as soon as I unboxed it. "It has a sporty, rugged design, perfect for daily use or workouts. The strap is comfortable and adjustable, and the round screen is clear, even outdoors." A third posted: "This is my first smartwatch I never thought I needed one, but it has been a total game changer for exercise I've used it for more than 3 days without a single charge, and it's still running perfectly. The battery life is amazing!" And, someone else wrote: "The watch is really smart and has tons of workout variations, so you can choose exactly what you want to focus on. It keeps me motivated and active. Totally worth it!" But, not everyone was impressed. A shopper who left a one star review claimed: "I spent hours trying to get this paired and synced to no avail. "Ended up giving up out of frustration. If it's this hard to pair the watch and get it to work properly then forget it. "I don't need that kind of frustration. I'm returning the watch for that reason." Someone else penned: "Nice watch but step counter doesn't properly for me. Some days doesn't register at all and I know I've walked 3 or 4 miles." A separate individual suggested: "The two 'buttons' on the left are not even buttons. They are just part of the plastic casing. "I can't imagine an £150 watch having fake buttons?"

Musk's xAI to raise up to $12 billion in debt for AI expansion, WSJ reports

July 22 (Reuters) - Elon Musk's artificial intelligence startup xAI is working with a financier to secure up to $12 billion more for its expansion plans, the Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday, citing people familiar with the situation. Valor Equity Partners, an investment firm whose founder, Antonio Gracias, has close ties to Musk, is in talks with lenders to raise the capital, according to the report. The money would be used to buy a massive supply of advanced Nvidia (NVDA.O), opens new tab chips that would be leased to xAI for a new huge data center meant to help train and power its AI chatbot Grok, the WSJ reported. Valor and xAI did not immediately respond to Reuters' requests for comment. Some lenders want the debt to be repaid within three years and to cap the amount of money borrowed in order to limit their risk, the report said. Training and deploying advanced AI systems is expensive, requiring costly hardware, intensive compute and skilled engineers in a highly competitive market where rivals such as OpenAI, Google and China's DeepSeek are trying to dominate the technology. XAI is training Grok on 230,000 graphics processing units, including Nvidia's 30,000 GB200 AI chips, in a supercluster, with inference handled by the cloud providers, Musk said in a post on X on Tuesday. He added that another supercluster will soon launch with an initial batch of 550,000 GB200 and GB300 chips. The AI startup was expected to burn through about $13 billion over the course of 2025, according to media reports. Earlier this month, the Financial Times reported that xAI was in talks to raise more money in a deal that could value the AI startup between $170 billion and $200 billion. In response, Musk had said xAI was not seeking funding. "We have plenty of capital."
