A glimpse of a dangerous combination revealed itself for Manchester City against Juventus

Yahoo4 hours ago

As Manchester City picked apart Juventus 5-2 at the Camping World Stadium in Orlando yesterday, there were a host of positives to come of yesterday's match. The performances and midfield play of Rodri and Tijjani Reijnders did stand out. Given the strengths of Rodri and Reijnders' games, they do figure to be a dangerous midfield combination for Manchester City.
There was also another combination that appeared to be blossoming for Manchester City against Juventus. It was on City's left-hand side. That was the link-up play between Jeremy Doku and Rayan Ait-Nouri. Doku and Ait-Nouri look like they have the makings of a lethal combination for Manchester City based on yesterday's display.
Jeremy Doku and Rayan Ait-Nouri look to have already struck up an understanding.
From the opening minute of Manchester City's win over Juventus, the interplay between Jeremy Doku and Rayan Ait-Nouri caught the eye. They combined well and their movement complemented each other's games. If Doku drifted centrally, Rayan Ait-Nouri went on the overlap on the left wing. When Jeremy Doku stayed wide, it created space for Ait-Nouri to go to work in the centre of the pitch. The second part of that particular equation created Manchester City's opening goal against Juventus. The goal can be seen below.
Rayan Ait-Nouri threaded in a superb through ball from Jeremy Doku from a central area. Doku got inside, beat his man and calmly beat Michele Di Gregorio in the Juventus goal in the 9th minute. It was a beautifully constructed goal; however, the link-up and understanding between Doku and Ait-Nouri was hard to ignore. Jeremy Doku knew to make the run as he knew Rayan Ait-Nouri could pick him out. The fact that Ait-Nouri produced a ball that Kevin De Bruyne would be proud of speaks to his technical ability.

That goal was the perfect encapsulation of the combination play between Jeremy Doku and Rayan Ait-Nouri. The pair did combine for other moments of quality during yesterday's match. But that one moment in particular did stand out above all others.
Jeremy Doku is relishing playing with Rayan Ait-Nouri at Manchester City.
In an interview published on mancity.com, Jeremy Doku explained that he is enjoying playing with Rayan Ait-Nouri. He added that the pair have already established a connection. Speaking on Rayan Ait-Nouri, Doku said: 'Honestly, he's a top player. He's settled so fast and quick, he can play inside or outside.'
'It's a joy to play with him. He speaks French as well.'

'Honestly, the connection is there. And I'm happy that he's here with us.'
The play of Rayan Ait-Nouri and Jeremy Doku did help Manchester City beat Juventus yesterday. Their combination play on the left did help keep the Juventus defence stretched during their FIFA Club World Cup Group G fixture. Looking further ahead, Doku and Ait-Nouri combining and complementing each other on the left could help Manchester City unlock the low defensive blocks teams employ against Pep Guardiola's side. They showed that yesterday which was a massive positive for Manchester City to take out of yesterday's win.

Olivier Giroud parting ways with LAFC after disappointing stint with team

Olivier Giroud is parting ways with LAFC after one disappointing year with the club. The 38-year-old Giroud and LAFC announced the decision Friday on social media. He will play in his final match Sunday night at home against Vancouver. After scoring only five goals in 37 matches for LAFC, Giroud will become a free agent after his departure. He is widely expected to join Lille, which finished fifth in the French league last season, on a free transfer. 'I want to thank all of the fans, my teammates and the staff at LAFC for making this an enjoyable stop in my career,' Giroud said in a statement. 'I am happy to have played a part in the success of LAFC. From winning a trophy last season to participating in the Club World Cup, this has been a great experience in LA for me and my family.' Giroud joined LAFC in July 2024 as a designated player after a long European career highlighted by prolific tenures with Arsenal and Chelsea. The top goal-scorer in the history of France's national team was expected to provide dynamic offense alongside MLS stars and fellow Frenchmen Denis Bouanga and Hugo Lloris. Instead, Giroud clearly struggled to adapt to the MLS game and to LAFC's counter-attacking style under coach Steve Cherundolo. LAFC also failed to figure out ways to involve Giroud in the offense consistently, unable to provide service to one of the sport's most dangerous finishers earlier in his career. Giroud usually played as a substitute for LAFC, and he didn't score his first MLS goal until last April 19. He did find the net in big moments, scoring in the U.S. Open Cup final last season and in the Leagues Cup final. 'Olivier has been an exemplary professional during his time at LAFC,' general manager John Thorrington said. 'He brought humility and a winning mentality that helped elevate everyone around him. Olivier has been a tremendous ambassador for the club on and off the field. We are grateful for his contributions.' LAFC is suddenly a team in full transition after a winless three-game run at the Club World Cup earlier this month. Cherundolo already has announced he will leave the club to move back to Germany after the season, and LAFC could be down to Bouanga as its only designated player by next month. LAFC added Dutch winger Javairô Dilrosun on loan from Club América earlier this month, but the loan is only through July 24. Dilrosun replaced Cengiz Ünder, whose disappointing MLS tenure ended this month. LAFC's lengthy pursuit of Antoine Griezmann also came up fruitless earlier this month when the French star extended his contract with Atlético Madrid through 2027. LAFC (7-4-5) still sits sixth in the Western Conference standings with two or three games in hand on every club above it, and it has an infusion of cash from beating América in a play-in match to reach the Club World Cup. Beacham writes for the Associated Press.

If you're planning to play a wager or two on MLB or any other sport this weekend, then you need to know about the Fanatics Sportsbook promo that delivers a fistful of bonus bets, No Sweat Bets or profit-boost tokens — depending on where you live. Since the Cubs won the World Series in 2016 — ending 108 years of agony for their massive fan base — they've struggled to build a team strong enough to get back to that point. But between shrewd trades for prospects (hello, likely All-Star center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong) and shrewd trades for superstars about to hit free agency (hello, likely All-Star right fielder Kyle Tucker, whom they acquired from the Astros), they've built a squad that leads the NL Central and could challenge the Los Angeles Dodgers if their starting pitching solidifies. Anyway, if you check the Fanatics Sportsbook app — one of the nation's best sports betting apps — you'll see the Cubs are an intriguing +1200 to win the World Series while the Astros are next in line at +1400. If you'd rather play on this weekend's games, you'll discover hundreds of ways to play on any MLB contest. To start playing, it takes just two minutes to capitalize on one of the lowest-risk, highest-reward sportsbook promos in the nation. Did you notice the last game on the list? It's the first time Indiana's Caitlin Clark and Dallas' Paige Bueckers play each other as pros — and the WNBA surely hope it's the first of many times. There's just one catch: the Wings aren't good right now and the Fever are still figuring out how to be a contender. Nonetheless, it's a worthy wagering opportunity on the league's last two No. 1 overall picks. Looking ahead to Saturday night for a moment, UFC 317 features two title fights — including a clash between Ilia Topuria and Charles Oliveira for the vacated lightweight title.
