New air-conditioners to have 20 degrees C as minimum temperature: Power Minister
Addressing journalists during a press conference to mark 11 years of the
Narendra Modi
government, the Minister said deliberations are underway to fix the minimum temperature at 20 degrees centigrade and maximum at 28 degrees centigrade for all new air conditioners.
Explaining the rationale, Union Power Secretary, Pankaj Agarwal said there are 10 crore air conditioners (AC) in the country and around 1.5 cr new ACs are added every year. A one degree reduction in AC temperature causes energy consumption to rise by 6%.

56 Mahila Samras Gram Panchayats emerge in Gujarat, Mehsana tops the list
Out of the total 761 gram panchayats which were declared Samras in the recent elections of over 4,500 gram panchayats, 56 have emerged as Mahila Samras Gram Panchayat, according to a statement from Gujarat government issued on Thursday. Of the 56 such Mahila Samras Gram Panchayats, Mehsana has a maximum of nine followed by Patan (7), Bhavnagar (6), Banaskantha (6) and Vadodara (4), the government added. Samras Gram Panchayat is a scheme of Gujarat government under which villagers choose their ward members and sarpanch with consensus and do not go to polls. If all unopposed ward members and Sarpanch are women, it is known as a Mahila Samaras Gram Panchayat. Those villages which become Samras get special benefits from the state government. The scheme was launched by the then Chief Minister Narendra Modi in 2001. The 56 Mahila Samras Gram Panchayats include Ilampur Gram Panchayat and Chadasana Gram Panchayat in Patan districts. As per the government release, the two gram panchayats have become Mahila Samras Gram Panchayat for the fifth consecutive time. While Ilampur has become Mahila Samras Gram Panchayat for the first time, Chadasana has got the distinction for the second time. Both the gram panchayats will receive a grant of Rs 8.50 lakh each from the state government for development purposes. Both the panchayats have a total of nine members each including the Sarpanch. Quoting Ilampur Sarpanch Kesarben Thakor, the release stated, 'Ilampur, with a population of over 1,100, has never had Panchayat elections since Independence. People here are mostly involved in farming and animal husbandry. With the grant we receive, we are committed to ensuring that the village sees real and lasting development.' Meanwhile, Chadasana Sarpanch Amathiben Desai was quoted as saying, 'Chadasana has a population of 547, where people from all communities live with mutual respect and unity. If the village continues to remain Samaras, peace will prevail and development will continue without disruption.'

BMC to appoint agency to develop textile museum at Kalachowki
With work on the first phase nearing completion, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is set to appoint an external agency to restore the old mill structures and develop a textile museum at Kalachowki in Byculla East. Estimated to cost between Rs. 80 and 100 crore, the BMC will bear no financial expenses of the project and will be borne by 'a reputed company or charitable trust or society' who can invest through their CSR model. Sprawled over an area of 44,000 square metre within the compound of the India United Mill no. 2 and 3 at Kalachowki, the civic body charted plans to redevelop the space as a textile museum in 2019. The project aimed at restoring the old mill buildings, whose history dates back to as early as 1869, into a textile museum while also developing recreational spaces within the compound with the aim of educating citizens about Mumbai's rich industrial history. Over the past few years, the civic body launched work on the establishment of a musical fountain over a pond, murals, amphitheatre among other recreational spaces within the compound of the mill. According to the BMC, the work on this phase has now been concluded with the final commissioning of the musical fountain underway. Launching the next phase of works, the civic body is now set to commence the restoration of the dilapidated mill structures, which will be redeveloped into a textile museum. On Thursday, the BMC's heritage conservation cell floated an Expression of Interest (EOI) inviting eligible and reputed public companies, charitable trusts or society to develop the textile museum. According to officials, the scope of work for the agency will include the redevelopment of the old structures earmarked for restoration as well as overlooking its operation and maintenance for the next 20 years. 'Besides the restoration of the old mills into a museum, the agency will also be responsible for carrying out development and maintenance of the museum, appointment of historians at the site as well as and maintenance of all other allied projects within the compound. An external agency is being roped in as the BMC needs someone who has an expertise in the subject of history and museums. We will be examining the conceptual designs submitted by the interested parties in the days to come,' said a BMC official. The museum is proposed to comprise a mill machinery from the 19th and 20th century. In its EOI, the civic body has invited the interested parties as a part of CSR activity or any other form of private investment of minimum Rs. 80 – 100 crore.
