Drive to accelerate today's side hustles into tomorrow's top UK businesses
With the number of small businesses falling by 9% over the last five years - from a peak of 6 million in 2020 to 5.45 million in 2024 - the organisations are jointly calling for greater support for start-ups, and particularly businesses starting life as side-hustles.
Research from Small Business Britain and eBay found that starting a side-hustle is now the leading route into entrepreneurship in the UK, with 39% of small businesses starting-up as side hustles and, of those, 46% growing into full-time ventures.
'As millions of Brits turn their passion projects into income, particularly during the cost of living crisis, we need more support for this section of the economy to accelerate the next generation of businesses and growth for the UK economy,' said Michelle Ovens CBE, Founder of Small Business Britain.
'We know that side-hustles are where so many brilliant businesses begin, but turning a great idea into a great enterprise takes knowledge, confidence and support.'
Launching on Wednesday 4 June, the Side Hustle Lab will offer up to 500 aspiring entrepreneurs across the UK hands-on guidance to help kickstart and grow their ventures.
The programme will showcase expert-led modules on how to get started, time management, marketing on a budget, including how to sell on eBay effectively, advice on customer service and scaling, as well as legal structures, finance and sustainable growth.
A strong focus on building digital skills will be given, due to the growing importance of digital marketing, online platforms, e-commerce and AI. Indeed, despite a general decline in overall small business numbers, there has been a strong shift towards digital-first business models in the UK economy.
Programme participants will also join a supportive network of fellow side hustlers and hear real-life success stories from entrepreneurs who turned passion into profit.
Ryan Panchoo, who founded his allergy-friendly doughnut business ' Borough 22 ' as a side-hustle in 2014, is an example of a business owner who has successfully scaled his venture from a side-hustle. He says of his journey: "I started in my kitchen, just trying to make doughnuts my kids could actually eat. I had no roadmap, just passion, purpose, and persistence, but I've ended up with a concession in Selfridges and am going from strength to strength. If you've got an idea tugging at you, just make a start. Side-hustles have the power to grow into something life-changing, not just for you, but for the people you serve. We need to make sure we are backing entrepreneurs in the UK starting out this way as they are the future."
Eve Williams, VP and GM of eBay UK, added: 'For thousands of entrepreneurs, eBay has turned passions into professions and side-hustles into start-ups. Our aim is for anyone to be able to start and grow their business with no barriers to entry and access to millions of UK customers in a few clicks.

The 28-year-old moved across the world to renovate a 600-year-old medieval home – because house prices in her hometown had 'sky-rocketed'. Kiki was stunned by the local property market when she came across the tiny Italian town of Mussomeli online where historic homes were going for 'the price of a handbag'. The 28-year-old snapped up a 17-room pad for just £22,800, (€27,000) – a fraction of the estimated £367,000 ($500,000) one closer to home would have cost, and has been restoring it ever since. 'The math just started to make sense in a way that North America never did.' At some points she was paying £1,830, ($2,500), a month for a one-bedroom apartment. Advertisement She explains: 'That didn't include parking or peace of mind. 'Nor with castle views and cobblestone charm. 'Rent felt like a monthly punishment for staying somewhere I wasn't thriving. 'It wasn't sustainable long-term, financially or emotionally.' Advertisement But it was not only the price that influenced Kiki who was looking for a change of pace when it came to her lifestyle. She says: 'In LA, everything felt like a rush — fast food, fast fashion, fast success. 'In Mussomeli, time feels expansive. I don't need to pay to escape chaos, I just step outside and I'm in a 14th-century fairytale Kiki Delichte 'I'll be cooking more, walking more, talking to neighbours, hosting dinners instead of scrolling. Advertisement 'My daily life will be rooted in connection, creativity, and calm. 'I'll still be working and creating, but from a place that nourishes me. It's not about slowing down completely, it's about being intentional.' So far she has spent £42,185 (€50,000) on renovations to the 600-year-old pad. She says: 'This is a historic home, the kind of place that reveals new surprises behind every wall. Advertisement 'To me, this isn't just a house, it's an experience, an art project, a home base for my future, and a way to live life a little differently. 'So I'm more than happy with the investment. 'I'm building a spa with a jacuzzi and sauna, and full bar, because if you're going to bring a home back to life, why not make it a little magical?' Kiki estimates that the total will land somewhere around £101,250 – £118,140, (€120,000 – €140,000). Advertisement She adds: 'I want it to feel like the ultimate home for peace and tranquillity. 'A place where I can bring all my loved ones together and experience something special and rare. 'It is the kind of place that feeds your soul and makes you feel at home the second you walk inside. 'I'm also building a library as an homage to the home's previous owner, a Sicilian scholar and professor. Advertisement 'It felt only right to preserve that legacy and create a space where books, ideas, and conversation are front and centre.' Kiki now splits her time between Sicily, LA and Canada while renovations continue, but she is almost ready to move in full-time. She estimates it'll save her around £2,200, ($3,000 a month) once renovations are finished. She says: 'Rent alone is already eliminated. Advertisement 'Groceries, utilities, dining out, everything is more affordable here.' And she's not wrong, according to local prices you can expect to pay around £3.40 for a pint, less than most supermarket sandwiches. Kiki says that another benefit is that she no longer has to pay for holidays. 'I don't need to pay to escape chaos, I just step outside and I'm in a 14th-century fairytale,' she says. Italy's €1 house scheme Depending on the region, a number of towns and villages across Italy have offered the cheap €1 properties to encourage people to move to the area. There are around 25 regions who are taking part, each with a number of properties. Many of the areas have a dwindling or aging population and hope to build the community again. The properties range from small houses to larger villas, but are all in a very rundown condition. The conditions for buying each property also vary, but the majority of them need large renovation works which are part of the scheme 'There's a kind of romance to that.' And to anyone else looking to take a leap of faith, she says that 'life doesn't have to follow the script'. She got the keys to her new home in January, started renovating in March and is moving in next month to do the finishing touches. Advertisement Kiki, originally from Winnipeg, Canada, says: 'You don't need a five-year plan, a perfect timeline, or anyone's permission to build a life that feels good. 'I bought an old, crumbling house in a tiny Sicilian town with no real plan beyond: this feels right. 'And it's led to more freedom, joy, and community than I could have imagined. I'm just healthier mentally, physically, and spiritually than I ever was in North America Kiki Delichte 'The life I've built here feels amazing.' But water company bosses have told the Government that families seeking respite with a paddling pool are putting a strain on supplies and harming water pressure. Furious campaigners slammed bosses for moaning about paddling pools while failing to fix pipes responsible for massive leaks. More than one trillion litres of water were lost to leaks in the year 2023/24. And fat cat bosses have bagged huge bonuses despite rising bills and sewage crises. Last year, Yorkshire Water CEO Nicola Shaw was paid salary and benefits worth £657,000 and a £371,000 bonus. But bosses there are now banned from getting bonuses amid fury over the sewage crisis. Thames Water, Anglian Water, Wessex Water, United Utilities and Southern Water are also subject to the ban. Water campaigner Feargal Sharkey blasted greedy bosses. He said: 'Water company bosses are only too happy to pile the blame and pass the buck on to the customers. The hot weather has parched the land and drained reservoirs across the country as UK hit with hosepipe bans 'But they have woefully failed to build new pipes and fix old ones. That's why we are low on water. 'Rather than moan about paddling pools and hike prices in the summer, water bosses need to get their house in order, stop lining their own pockets and invest in new pipes to stop the leaks.' Yorkshire and South East water companies have both imposed a hosepipe ban and told their customers to stop filling up paddling pools. More than seven million Brits have been hit by the restrictions. More water firms are expected to follow. They have woefully failed to build new pipes and fix old ones. That's why we are low on water Feargal Sharkey, Water campaigner Announcing their hosepipe ban earlier this week, Yorkshire Water said: 'We are asking customers to put down their hosepipes, so we can let our reservoirs recover. 'Our reservoir levels haven't actually increased since the last week of January.' Customers must not use hosepipes to water gardens, or fill up swimming pools, paddling pools and hot tubs. They also must not be used to fill or maintain a pond or water fountain. But they are allowed to use a bucket of water or a watering can. Meanwhile, Thames Water plans to make customers who use more than 685 litres a day pay 'twice the current rate'. The firm is one of 15 carrying out or planning surge pricing trials, for customers with smart water meters, in the coming years.
