Management disregards govt. directions, allege NIEIT staff

The Hindua day ago
The employees of NIE Institute of Technology (NIEIT) at Koorgalli in Mysuru have alleged that the management had disregarded the directions issued by the Higher Education Department to continue their services.
In a press statement, they said the Higher Education Department on June 27 directed the institution to continue the services of teaching and non-teaching staff at NIEIT, pending the final outcome of a writ petition filed in the High Court in this regard.
The department's direction came after the High Court issued an interim order on June 12 in their favour, they said.
Despite repeated requests for their reinstatement, the principal has blatantly refused to comply, they added.
It may be mentioned that the management decided to close NIEIT at Koorgalli, which has about 95 teaching and non-teaching staff, from the ensuing year, while leasing its infrastructure on Mananthavadi Road.
The employees claimed that the management assured to absorb all the permanent staff of NIEIT into NIE during the merger with service continuity, seniority, and lawful benefits, but the promises were not met.
While alleging that they their entry into the NIEIT campus was barred from June 12, and that unlawful retrenchment notices were served on June 14, the aggrieved employees said that the Voluntary Separation Scheme introduced by the management also deprives them of their rightful dues.
However, the management said the matter was still pending in the court.

Court proceedings circulated on social media: State to HC

Madurai: The state govt on Tuesday informed the Madras high court that video clippings of court proceedings related to the Thiruppuvanam custodial death case hearing on July 1 were being recorded and circulated on social media, in violation of the Madras High Court Video-Conferencing in Courts Rules, 2020. A division bench of justice S M Subramaniam and justice A D Maria Clete was hearing a batch of public interest litigations concerning the recent custodial death of B Ajith Kumar in Thiruppuvanam in Sivaganga district. During the course of the hearing, additional advocate general (AAG) M Ajmal Khan, appearing for the state, submitted that video clippings were circulated on social media. However, the judges orally observed that the court would deal with the matter separately. Speaking to TOI, senior counsel Khan said, "Some fringe elements posted selective clippings of oral observations made by the judges in the court, projecting as though an order was being pronounced. These clippings circulated on social media are misused to defame the state govt." He stated that Rule 3(8) of the Madras High Court Video-Conferencing in Courts Rules reads, "There shall be no unauthorised recording of judicial proceedings by any person." The state just wanted to bring to the court's notice that court proceedings were being recorded and circulated on social media.

Manipur High Court asks NIA to submit progress report on Jiribam abduction, killing of women and children

The Manipur High Court has asked the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to file a detailed progress report on the investigation into the abduction and killing of six women and children from the Meitei community amidst the flare-up in the ethnic conflict seen in Manipur's Jiribam district last November. Also read: Why is Manipur's Jiribam district on edge? | Explained This came up when a Bench of Chief Justice K. Somashekar and Justice Ahanthem Bimol Singh was hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by the office-bearers of the civil society organisation Uripok Apunba Lup, a conglomerate of dozens of local clubs in the Uripok area. The petitioners had called for detailed records of the case, and prayed for directions to arrest those involved in the crime, and a speedy and time-bound probe into the case. In a July 7 order of the Bench, the High Court said it had almost been seven months since the incident and 'no progress report is submitted by the NIA'. The court said the NIA's advocate had sought additional time to come back to it with a detailed progress report 'in terms of the chargesheet'. The court went on to direct the NIA to submit the 'detailed progress report in terms of chargesheet before the concerned court of Law'. 'If chargesheet is not filed, this matter should be viewed seriously,' the court added. The High Court has listed the matter for the next hearing on July 24. After the November flare-up in the ethnic conflict in Manipur's Jiribam district, the NIA had taken up two other cases for investigation, apart from the abduction and killing of the six women and children from the Meitei community. One was for the alleged rape and burning alive of a Kuki-Zo woman, Zosangkim (31), in Jiribam on November 7; and the alleged attack on a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) post in Jiribam's Borobekra on November 11, in which 10 armed militants were gunned down. Earlier, in the hearing of this PIL, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) had filed an affidavit before the court, arguing that since the Jiribam cases were a matter of 'law and order, they fall under the State government'. This statement had come even after the NIA, a central agency, had taken over the cases. Since this affidavit of the MHA, however, Chief Minister N. Biren Singh resigned, and Manipur was placed under President's Rule.
