Adopting new technologies is great challenge for future engineers: Tessy Thomas

New Delhi, Aug 2 (PTI) Tessy Thomas, popularly known as the Missile Woman of India, on Saturday said adopting new technologies at a time when the world is rapidly digitizing and ensuring those technologies are 'ethical, inclusive and sustainable" is a great challenge for 'future engineers, scientists, entrepreneurs and leaders".
Thomas, a distinguished scientist and former director general (aeronautical systems) of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), made the comments while addressing the 56th convocation of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi.
'At a time when the world is rapidly digitizing, adopting new technologies and ensuring those technologies are ethical, inclusive and sustainable is a great challenge for future engineers, scientists, entrepreneurs and leaders. Whether it is decarbonization, water conservation, digital equity, bio-innovation or an engineering marvel, let it be your contribution to society," she told the graduating students.
Asserting 'human values will matter more than the valuations" in a world 'increasingly driven by data, algorithms and automation", Thomas said, 'IIT education has prepared you to build systems and has trained you to be custodians of trust in a world dominated by technology." 'You are entering a world brimming with complexity and creativity. In this decade, the world needs problem solvers, dreamers who implement, builders who take action and leaders who execute. Move on with the spirit of innovation, humility to learn from others and courage to walk paths uncharted," she added.
Twenty-year-old Chandan Godara, BTech in Civil Engineering, is the youngest graduate, and 63-year-old Gopal Krishan Taneja, PhD, is the oldest graduate to receive their degrees.
The first graduates in the BTech course in Energy Engineering and three PG courses, the Interdisciplinary MTech course in Robotics and the Master of Science by Research in VLSI Design, Tools and Technology, and Artificial Intelligence were awarded degrees as well.
The institute also honoured seven of its esteemed alumni with the Distinguished Alumni Awards (DAA) 2025 at the convocation ceremony.
Instituted in 1992, the DAA has been awarded to 151 alumni to date, representing excellence across diverse fields such as science, technology, entrepreneurship, public service, academia and innovation. PTI GJS AS AS AS

In the clip, Lang interacts with the remote employee who appears on a screen, managing the entire check-in process. The assistant asks whether he needs one or two room keys, then proceeds to guide him and generate the registration form, all conducted seamlessly through a video call. 'The Miami hotel has outsourced its front desk to India. Guests are checked in virtually on a video call with an Indian representative. More American jobs are outsourced overseas. At some point, this should just become illegal. If you make money in America, you should hire Americans," one user commented. 'Ridiculous!! They need to tariff these American companies for giving jobs away to another country," another said. A third said, 'Outsourcing has reached another level. India is the biggest beneficiary of this." Varanasi: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), BHU has earned international acclaim with its mobile application 'CommuteQ' being named a global winner of the Urban Transport Challenge 2025, under the Station Access and Mobility Program (STAMP). The challenge, organised by Toyota Mobility Foundation in collaboration with WRI India, BMTC, Bangalore Metro, and ELCIA, recognised CommuteQ for its technological innovation, creativity, and human-centric design. Led by Dr Agnivesh Pani, assistant professor in the department of Civil Engineering at IIT-BHU, the mobile app is a collaborative project involving experts from IIT Tirupati, IIIT Bangalore, IIM Indore, and ITSPE India. The app promotes eco-friendly commuting through behavioural nudges and digital tools that encourage walking, cycling, and the use of public transport. Currently in beta testing, the app offers features like mobility quests, personal commute tracking, carbon savings dashboards, real-time data on public transport availability, and route visibility. Boots must share space with bots: Army chief Gen Upendra Dwivedi on warfare, future conflicts

Army chief Gen Upendra Dwivedi on Monday asserted that the Indian armed forces are "prepared for fifth-generation conflicts" driven by non-contact warfare, strategic tempo and psychological dominance. In his address at an event held at the Indian Institute of Technology-Madras, he emphasised that future conflicts would demand a blend of conventional strength and modern capabilities, where "boots must share space with bots." The army chief described Operation Sindoor as a "landmark, intelligence-driven response that redefined India's counter-terrorism doctrine." He said the tri-services action showcased India's ability to deliver "precise, punitive and coordinated action," compelling Pakistan to seek a ceasefire within 88 hours. Gen Dwivedi highlighted the transformative journey of the Indian Army, underlining the changing character of warfare marked by "grey zone conflicts, technological democratisation and need for integrated responses." On Operation Sindoor, he said the 88-hour operation was "unprecedented in scale, range, depth and strategic impact" and was executed across the 'DIME' spectrum. 'DIME' refers to diplomatic, informational, military and economic domains. According to a press statement, Gen Dwivedi on Monday inaugurated 'Agnishodh' -- a research cell at IIT-Madras to boost self-reliance in defence technology -- during his two-day visit to Chennai. In a landmark step towards 'Atmanirbharta' in defence technology, the Indian Army has joined hands with the IIT-Madras to establish 'Agnishodh', the Indian Army Research Cell (IARC) on the campus of the institution. The initiative is part of the army's broader transformation framework, guided by the 'Five Pillars of Transformation' articulated by the army chief. 'Agnishodh' specifically advances one of these pillars, modernisation and technology infusion, and represents the army's drive to integrate academic research with real-time applications, the ministry said. Addressing a gathering at IIT-Madras on the theme 'Operation Sindoor - A New Chapter in India's Fight Against Terrorism,' Gen Dwivedi described the operation as a landmark, intelligence-driven response that redefined India's counter-terrorism doctrine. Highlighting the evolving nature of warfare, the general officer underscored that "Indian armed forces are prepared for fifth-generation conflicts driven by non-contact warfare, strategic tempo, and psychological dominance." Emphasising the army's commitment to self-reliance, under 'Swadeshikaran Se Sashaktikaran', he outlined key collaborations under national technology missions such as 'INDIAai', 'Chip-to-Startup', and 'Project QuILA', with MCTE, Mhow (Military College of Telecommunication Engineering) as a strategic partner, the statement said. The army chief appreciated the projects undertaken by Indian Army Cells at IIT-Delhi, IIT-Kanpur, and IISc, Bengaluru by harnessing academic innovations. He said initiatives like 'Project SAMBHAV' and additive manufacturing partnerships with Army Base Workshops are setting new benchmarks. 'Agnishodh' would transform academic excellence into battlefield innovation, powering India's journey towards 'Viksit Bharat by 2047', the officer said. The 'Agnishodh' collaboration will further extend into the IIT-Madras Research Park, working alongside entities such as the Advanced Manufacturing Technology Development Centre (AMTDC) and Pravartak Technologies Foundation. Gen Dwivedi reiterated the Indian Army's commitment to its 'Decade of Transformation' vision through various reforms. The general officer also felicitated four distinguished ex-servicemen with Veteran Achievers Awards, honouring their selfless service and continued commitment to nation-building, according to the statement.
