Ex-England cricketer hails Gill, Pant for seamless transition in Indian Test team: 'The King is dead, long live the King'

There was a big question mark on what India's batting lineup in Test cricket would look like and how they would perform without Virat Kohli after the former captain and batting superstar abruptly retired from the format in May.
Shubman Gill's red-hot form in the ongoing tour of England, however, has helped ease some of those concerns, with the newly-appointed Test skipper and Kohli's successor at the No 4 spot having smashed nearly 600 runs so far in the series.

Lloyd heaps praise on Gill and Pant after heroics at Headingley and Edgbaston
Former England all-rounder David Lloyd, for one, feels India couldn't have asked for a better transition as far as India's premier Test batter is concerned and made a similar comparison between Pant and legendary wicketkeeper-captain MS Dhoni.
'People say world-class players are irreplaceable, but are they? This is a real case of 'The King is dead, long live the King.' Shubman Gill has taken over seamlessly from one of the greatest modern batsmen in Virat Kohli and in style too,' Lloyd wrote in his column for the Daily Mail.
'Meanwhile, Rishabh Pant is always box office and has taken India to the next level after MS Dhoni. High praise indeed, for both,' he added.
Both Gill and Pant have been outstanding in the two Tests that have taken place so far in the series, with the second match entering its final day on Sunday. Gill has racked up 585 runs at an average touching 150 (146.25) – including 269 and 161 in the second Test at Edgbaston – in his first series since he succeeded Rohit Sharma as Test captain.
Pant, appointed Gill's deputy in the format during the squad announcement in May, sits at the second spot on the run-scorer's list with 342 runs at an average of 85.50. That includes twin centuries in the first Test at Headingley that took his career tally of Test tons to 8 – two more than Dhoni, making him the Indian wicketkeeper with most Test centuries.

Losing to Magnus I understand, anybody can lose the game. But even in this game, we didn't see the tenacity. 'Something is wrong with Gukesh. Yesterday was not a great day. His games were very feeble. Yes, he beat (Wesley) So, but his game against (Anish) Giri was a sign of trouble for me,' the 62-year-old added. Soccer-Putellas finds flow state as Spain thump Belgium 6-2

Finding herself in the zone on a wet, blustery evening, Putellas picked up her second straight player of the game award and contributed hugely to Spain overcoming a sloppy start to put the Belgians to the sword. "I think there are plenty of moments in a game, the team had an excellent performance, and even if we almost always have things we can improve, I believe that team is fine. We feel comfortable, if there's something that doesn't work we can change and adapt," she told reporters. Putellas opened the scoring with a typical Spanish goal midway through the first half, punctuating an intricate passing move with a powerful strike, and she netted Spain's sixth goal late on to cap a fine individual display. Asked whether her flow state came from her own performance or from that of the team, Putellas said it was a little bit of both. "They go hand in hand; as an individual you think about the group and when you feel we are all together, you flow, it makes me feel good of course," she explained. "I have this role of creating options, sometimes I finish them, sometimes others do, (but) I'm feeling great." Belgium proved a tough nut to crack but Putellas and her team trusted themselves to score, no matter who ended up getting the goals. "When we have them in the low block, we have more options, we are closer to the box. Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh) [India], July 8 (ANI): Akash Deep's sensational 10-wicket haul in India's historic win over England at Edgbaston wasn't just a sporting triumph; it was a deeply personal one. As the young pacer tore through the English batting lineup, his sister, Akhand Jyoti Singh, who has been battling cancer for the past two months, felt immense joy and pride. 'Akash dedicated his victory to me, and I feel very proud of him... We were overjoyed when he took 10 wickets. We were all clapping here. I did not remember my sadness at all when he took wickets,' she told ANI. Akash revealed earlier after the match that he had kept his sister's illness private and was playing with one mission in mind, to make her happy. 'The biggest thing is that I have not told anyone yet. My elder sister has been suffering from cancer for the last two months. She is stable now. She is fine. She will be the happiest. She has been going through this mentally for the last two months,' Akash said in a heartfelt conversation with Cheteshwar Pujara. 'I was playing this match for her. I have to make her happy with this match,' he added. Akash's mother, Laddooma Devi, expressed immense pride in her son's performance, calling it the realisation of a long-cherished dream. 'I feel very proud... I am very happy... It was my dream that he should play for the Indian team... Maybe Akash takes 10-10 wickets like this. he should play like this for India in future,' she said. Coming to the match, England once again opted to field first. Jadeja scored an unbeaten 69* in 118 balls, with five fours and a six. India declared at 427/6, leading by 607 runs and setting England a monstrous 608 runs to win. During the run-chase, England was restricted to 50/3.
