Racing punter wins life-changing sum after footballer-turned-jockey scores on huge outsider to leave bookies in tears

A FORMER footballer-turned-jockey helped a punter win a life-changing sum after scoring on a 33-1 outsider.
The two incredible bets - which featured the same four horses - left the bookies in tears.

Shocked traders at William Hill admitted: "We just have to take our hats off to them."
The in-shop punter landed just shy of £40,000 thanks to a £20 four-fold accumulator and a £10 Lucky 15 returned £23,551.
All in all it meant they walked out of the bookies in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, a whopping £39,021 better off.
The four horses were all relative shorties apart from the nerve-shredding last leg.
After Tony Carroll's three-year-old gelding Son Of Astar went in by just a nose at 4-1 at in the 7.10 at Ffos Las, Kingdom Of Stars (9-4) won the 7.20 at Kempton.
It was back over to the Welsh track to see Spartan Times oblige at 2-5 before the final leg at Kempton.
Incredibly the punter had taken a chance on 33-1 roughie Capuchinero in a Class 6 handicap over a mile on the all-weather.
Trained by Alice Haynes, the six-year-old made smooth headway two from home and knuckled down inside the final furlong.
He bumped but dug deep to score under 3lb claimer Christian Howarth, who was a striker at Cambridge United's academy.
Spokesperson for William Hill, Lee Phelps, said: "We've been hit by a couple of corking racing multiples.
"A smart punter walked away with nearly £40,000 after four selections did the business on Wednesday evening, having placed the bets in our Flamstead shop in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire.
"They've managed to not only land a £20 four-fold acca, but also a £10 Lucky 15, meaning they've walked away with £39,021.
"We just have to take our hats off to them.
"It's not every day that you head to your local William Hill shop, place a four-fold acca and a Lucky 15 and walk away with a hefty five-figure sum.
"Credit where it's due to this shrewd punter."

Eddie Howe's Newcastle admission opens door to Alexander Isak exit

Eddie Howe has reiterated he is keen to keep Alexander Isak at Newcastle but has now admitted he cannot guarantee the striker will stay this summer. Isak is missing Newcastle's pre-season tour of Asia with what the club described as a minor thigh injury but after he asked to be able to explore his options of a move. Liverpool had made an inquiry for Isak, though they also went on to sign the Newcastle target Hugo Ekitike, while Arsenal are other admirers of his and Al-Hilal are reportedly willing to give him a lucrative contract. Howe admitted that Isak, who has three years left on his current deal, is not in talks about a new deal with Newcastle but underlined that he hopes his top scorer remains at St James' Park, with the club facing a difficult decision. "He is now in Newcastle getting his injury assessed,' said Howe, who is in Singapore, preparing for a friendly against Arsenal on Sunday. 'Hopefully, he will be back soon and playing in the black and white shirt, that's what we want to see. "Of course, there are things going on behind the scenes. Conversations that happen between Alex and ourselves and Alex and the club will stay private. "He is very popular in the dressing room and would love him to continue to his journey at Newcastle. There are no contract talks taking place, that will be for a later date, potentially. I certainly hope he stays. It's football, who knows what the future will bring." Isak scored 23 Premier League goals last season, after 21 the previous year, and would be expected to command a price of over £100m. Howe suggested Isak would not be sold on the cheap but did not put a deadline on when the situation has to be resolved. "Whatever happens, has to be right for Newcastle. We are in a strong position financially and are determined to be successful," Howe added. "There are always big decisions to make when you are at Newcastle. I have experienced it many times. I've sold players throughout my managerial career. There is a wider picture; there is a football club that has to make the decision. "I wouldn't put a timescale on it. It has to be right for the football club and they will make the right decision with all the information they have. "It's up to us to make good decisions the other way and to improve the squad, regardless of Alex's situation. We want stability and the group to have a really good feeling. I don't think we are distracted. We are here and we are focused."

Pubs to stay open late AGAIN tomorrow in huge boost for Brits cheering on Lionesses to victory in Euros final

PUBS in England and Wales are going to stay open late tomorrow as fans cheer on the Lionesses in the Euro final. Tomorrow night pubs are set to stay open for an extra two hours as England compete against Spain in the European Championship final. 3 3 3 The Home Office confirmed on Friday that licensing hours would be extended across England and Wales. It means that pubs will be able to stay open until 1am, long after the game kicks off at 5pm. Earlier this year, the government announced the measure that said if either England or Wales made it into the semi-finals, pubs across the country could open late. Policing minister Dame Diana Johnson said at the time that venues "stand to benefit" from later closing times. Pub licensing hours can be relaxed for events of "exceptional national significance" with both the semi-final and final of the Euros included under this umbrella term. Tomorrow's match will take place at St. Jakob-Park in Basel, Switzerland. Earlier this week, the same extension on opening times was allowed during Tuesday's semi final match with Italy. It gave Brits plenty of time to celebrate after the team beat Italy 2-1 during extra time. The British Beer and Pub Association has estimated that pub-goers will buy a million extra pints during the final, which could boost the economy by £5 million. Announcing the news, Home Secretary Yvette Cooper said: "I want to wish the best of luck to (manager) Sarina Weigman and the England squad, who we hope will bring it home once again and continue on as champions of Europe." Despite spending much of the match losing 1-0 to Italy on Tuesday, the Lionesses managed to secure a win in an exhilarating end to the match. During the 96th minute, 19-year-old Michelle Agyemang scored, as England went on to win during extra time. It followed their 3-2 quarter-final win against Sweden. The tense match lasted an extra 30 minutes, with the team going on to beat Sweden during the penalty shootout. Fourteen spot-kicks were taken during the tense showdown between England and Sweden. Only five of these were scored, six saved and three missed for a conversion rate of just 35.7 per cent. The Lionesses won the Euros in 2022, beating rivals Germany 2-1, and hope to do the same this year. Their 2022 victory was hailed as "inspiring" with the team bringing football home in front of a sold out Wembley Stadium. Despite the increased custom the championship could bring pubs, some landlords have said they're struggling to cope with increased costs. In addition to the increase in minimum wage, the BBPA said that English pubs are unfairly taxed compared to those in Europe.

Eddie Howe: Newcastle have not held contract talks with Alexander Isak

Eddie Howe has revealed no contract talks have been held with Alexander Isak but hopes to keep the striker at Newcastle. Isak has been at the centre of transfer speculation over the summer window and it was reported earlier in the week that he has asked to explore a move away. The 25-year-old did not travel with the Magpies for their pre-season tour of Asia, with the club stating that he missed out due to a 'minor thigh injury'. Hours later, reports emerged that Isak – who has been linked with a move to Liverpool in recent weeks – had told club executives he wanted to explore the possibility of a transfer away from St James' Park. The Guardian revealed on Friday Isak has been offered a staggering £600,000-a-week tax-free deal by Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia. Isak missed Newcastle's first pre-season fixture against Celtic last weekend and before their friendly against Arsenal on Sunday, Howe provided an update on the striker's situation. 'Of course there's things going on behind the scenes. He will be aware he's in the news every day, and I'm sure that's not easy for anyone in that situation,' the Newcastle manager said. 'Conversations that happen between Alex and the club or Alex and myself will stay private for obvious reasons. We do share a really good relationship with him. He's been magnificent for us since he's joined. He's very popular in the dressing room and we'd love him to continue his journey at Newcastle.' Howe also added that there are no contract talks taking place with Isak, who has three years left on his existing deal. 'As far as I'm aware, I don't think there are any contract talks taking place at the moment. That'll be for a later date potentially,' said Howe. 'I think for now, with the situation as it is and the state of the window, in the sense that it's hurtling towards the end of the window very quickly from our perspective, there's still so much that could happen.' Howe confirmed that Isak is in Newcastle being assessed, adding at a press conference reported on the club's website: 'With his injury, I've got no major update on that. He first mentioned his thigh just before the Celtic game and we assumed it would a be very minimal injury, nothing too serious. Sign up to Football Daily Kick off your evenings with the Guardian's take on the world of football after newsletter promotion 'Then on the Monday after the Celtic game, he went in from training very early, didn't feel right, so he's now in Newcastle getting that injury assessed. Hopefully he'll be back soon playing in the black and white shirt. That's what we all want to see.' Isak joined Newcastle in August 2022 and has continued to flourish during his time on Tyneside. Last year's campaign saw the Sweden forward fire 27 goals for the Magpies as they lifted the Carabao Cup and secured Champions League football with a fifth-placed finish in the Premier League.
