HEIDELBERG, GERMANY - Newsaktuell - 29 July 2025 - Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (HEIDELBERG) is positioning itself in the defense sector with its first concrete project and is entering into a strategic partnership with VINCORION Advanced Systems GmbH. As part of a memorandum of understanding (MOU), both companies have agreed on a cooperation spanning several years, which is expected to be expanded in the future and to strengthen industrial performance as well as security of supply in the defense sector in the long term. This cooperation will see HEIDELBERG move into the defense market by developing, industrializing, and building power control and distribution systems for VINCORION. In this way, the two companies will help boost technological sovereignty and safeguard domestic value chains.
Established technology leader for critical systems
VINCORION has over 60 years of experience in developing and manufacturing state-of-the-art power systems for use in civilian and military applications. The company also develops cutting-edge technology, including rescue hoists for helicopters.

High vertical range of manufacture in Germany
HEIDELBERG is aiming to become established as a reliable partner for high-quality products and gradually expand this role within the defense sector. HEIDELBERG technologies offer key value-adding expertise covering hardware and software development, electronic component manufacture, machining, foundry technology, and the assembly of highly complex plant and system solutions in the heavy engineering sector. This makes HEIDELBERG an experienced end-to-end system partner with a portfolio that also includes the supply of spare parts and service operations. One capability that delivers particular added value is rapid scaling using existing infrastructure and capacities.

Pfizer, BioNTech lose UK appeal in Moderna patent case
LONDON: Pfizer and its German partner BioNTech on Friday lost their bid to overturn a ruling that their Covid-19 vaccine infringed one of Moderna's patents at London's Court of Appeal. Last year, the High Court ruled that one of Moderna's patents relating to the messenger RNA (mRNA) technology which underpinned its Covid-19 vaccine was valid and that Pfizer and BioNTech's Comirnaty vaccine had infringed it, meaning Moderna is entitled to damages in relation to sales after March 2022. The High Court also ruled that the other Moderna patent under challenge in the case was invalid. Moderna was refused permission to appeal against that decision. But Pfizer and BioNTech were granted permission to appeal in an attempt to try and invalidate Moderna's second patent and appealed earlier this month, arguing Moderna's developments of mRNA technology were obvious developments of previous work, rendering the patent invalid. Judge Richard Arnold, however, rejected Pfizer and BioNTech's appeal. Pfizer and BioNTech said in a joint statement that the decision 'does not change our unwavering stance that this patent is invalid' and the companies will seek to appeal. 'This decision has no immediate impact on Pfizer and BioNTech or Comirnaty,' the companies added. Moderna did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Friday's decision in the latest ruling in the legal dispute between the two sides over their competing vaccines, which helped save millions of lives during the pandemic. The companies have also been involved in proceedings in Germany – where a court ruled in Moderna's favour in March – the United States Patent Office, which held that two Moderna Covid-19 vaccine patents were invalid, and elsewhere. - Reuters

EU court rules Volkswagen liable for use of defeat devices
BRUSSELS: The European Court of Justice on Friday ruled that carmakers like Volkswagen remain liable for using unlawful defeat devices, such as temperature-sensitive emissions software, even if the vehicles met EU standards, which doesn't guarantee the technology's legality. The case at the European Union's top court arose from two German lawsuits involving Volkswagen diesel vehicles fitted with defeat devices, either during production or through later software updates. The Court said compensation to buyers can be reduced based on vehicle use or capped at 15% of the purchase price, but it must still adequately reflect the damage caused. 'The impact on Volkswagen is expected to be limited, as only a few diesel-related lawsuits are still pending before German courts,' Volkswagen said. 'In our view, today's ECJ decision will not change that,' the German carmaker added. Defeat devices are tools or software that alter vehicle emissions, triggering legal disputes over whether manufacturers misuse them to conceal true pollution levels. Carmakers have argued these devices only activate at certain temperatures to protect the engine and comply with the law.
